Just done this and the tensioner on my 2007 Z4 coupe N52 - along with the oil cooler/housing gaskets (removing the housing allowed the access space) The balancer was £450 from BMW!! Found it much easier to do the balancer from below. Great informative video cheers 👍

Try this, hold one of the e bolts in the tightened position whilst trying to slacken another using a quick whack of the hammer on a socket extension! Or how about Holding the flywheel via inspection hatch if it has one like E46 or remove starter to jam up flywheel

Great video! On the front of the pulley in the center metal section, there are two cutaways on the outer rim. Does the positioning of these matter when fitting the new part? I just replaced mine and when I'd bolted it up I realised they were at a slight different rotation to where the original pulley was
@Pseudoaaajdhdhdhdhd4 жыл бұрын
I don`t think so, most likely those cuts are for balancing
@tonymarshall43532 жыл бұрын
Those cutaways are to fit the official BMW locking tool.

My 2011 318d E90 has the exact same problem. Literally, the pulley fell off exactly like on the car in the video. How do I torque the screws? I mean, I heard that the engine rotates when tightening and some suggested ested to lock the engine from underneath, at the flex plate theeth.

Where is the radiator ? Did you remove it completely ? I dont think so ?? I dont have the space like this...barely fits an wrench ...
@tonymarshall43532 жыл бұрын
You need to remove the radiator fan which is very simple - one connector plug, one Torx screw and then release the clip on the RHS when facing the front of the vehicle. This provides much more space.

@@tonymarshall4353 Thanks but i fixed it without the radiator removed because there is AC in the car and it lookt like that would have to be disconected aswell... BMW 1serie N47 engine so there was not much space but i could macgyver it like usual !

But i don't remember so good because it was my wife's car and i only stick my head above that engine 1 time a year... ;-) I only know that there is no space on the one series compared to the 3 serie's however now i bought a new car 325d and in this setup again there is no space so with a waterpump removal or something like that the fan or radiator has to come out again...

@@sandyande Hi Sandy, my crankshaft pulley broke today, so in my stupidness i tried removing what was left like you did and moved the pulley about an inch in the process, so phoned a friend and he indicated to me that this is bad news and that the engine will have to be opened up in order to check the valves are not moving in the way of the pistons, I'm assuming he is right since is see everyone locking the remaing pulley before removing. So my question is what do I do now?

@@kobusvantonder7625. Don’t worry all you’ve done is just turn the engine over on the pulley. The pistons are still in sequence.
