Hello there. Can you tell me if i can exchange the e39 m5 gearbox for another gearbox but an Auto. Maybe the e39 540 will fit . Would be nice to have the [addle shift later on also if this fits . Thank you. ( this is also for my body as i am an Amputee with no left leg).!
@E39Source5 ай бұрын
The 540i's automatic transmission would bolt up the S62, but I don't think it would handle the additional power and torque reliably. Additionally, the M5 was never offered with any automatic gearboxes, so the coding/programming would require a lot of custom software which may not be feasible. The E39 540i M-Tech (2003 only) may be a better option for you, as those are readily available with the automatic.

How did the worn CSB feel like when driving? Regarding the 545i short shifter, is there any correlation with worn syncrings? My gearbox is a bit "ruff" and it also has some bearing noise. I reinstalled the OEM M5 parts in my car due to my issues with the gearbox. I have bought a used gearbox that I will install when changing the clutch and flywheel in the future. So my question is if I should keep the OEM shifter or go with the short shifter "again"? Thanks for the video!
@E39Source6 жыл бұрын
Under acceleration at low speeds it was kitting into the chassis creating a nasty thud and noise. There shouldn't be any correlation what so ever. I would definitely go back to the 545i shifter.

Turner Motorsports make a nice upgrade for that rear bushing on the shifter carrier as an upgrade to the rubber oe part

What was the issue that drove you guys to change these parts? My E39 M5 has some serious shunt in the driveline when tipping in and out the throttle. DMF not long changed and car is 100K miles. Also clicking noise can be heard underneath the car at parking speeds when engaging and disengaging the clutch in gear. Great vid.
@E39Source6 жыл бұрын
Around 20mph, under acceleration, the driveshaft was bouncing around and hitting the chassis due to a failed CSB. They are also known to click when the bearings fail. You definitely need to do what we did in this video o fix your issues.

Do you need to have the driveshaft out to replace the selector rod bushings?
@E39Source6 жыл бұрын
No, but it does make it quite a bit easier. We had the driveshaft out to replace the CSB.

Thanks, Ryan! I’m installing new trans mounts and a 545i shifter. I’d like to replace every piece of rubber in the shifter assembled while I’m down there but wasn’t sure if it could be accessed with the driveshaft in the way.

Just an FYI, the flex disc is correctly spelled giubo (from the original manufacturer) and pronounced like an Alfa Romeo Giulia
@Consoft045 жыл бұрын
It was because of the thud when driving is why you replaced the center bearing? This is not a common thing to replace? Also, if doing the short shifter do you need to remove the exhaust or was that only bec you did the bearing and the donut? Thanks, Chris
@E39Source5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, Nate had a thunk under low speed acceleration. The CSB (center driveshaft support bearing) had failed, causing that slop. The bearing should be replaced every ~100,000 miles or so. The ball bearings can also fail, causing a clicking noise during initial acceleration from a stand still. The exhaust does not need to come down for the shifter rebuild, but it's a lot easier with it out of the way.

@@E39Source Hey Ryan, Thank you so much for the reply and the information on when this should be replaced. Chris

Hi, hope you may help: I have a vibration coming out of the shifter when in third gear which I can feel when simply touching the shifter with weight of a finger (not pressing or resting my arm on it). To me it seems like it needs just a little nudge to "fall out" of the 3rd to neutral. What could be the cause? The transmission itself shifts buttery smooth and works flawlessly.
@E39Source6 жыл бұрын
You cold have an issue with the linkage... but that sounds more like a transmission synchros issue to me. I would have a shop take a look at it.
@johnDe5tr0yer6 жыл бұрын
@@E39Source thanks for response. I will check the linkage next time I have it on the lift - I do the work myself as long as I can :) I have the car for 6 months now, and had not the real reason to put it up on the lift.

@@kzoomin Yes actually! I changed all the bushings - plastic and rubber parts - and the problem wasn't happening anymore. All parts were OEM, and I must say, I was really astonished how good the original shifter feels, really crisp with shorter shift knob. The transmission is fully functional, there are no problems with it.
