BMW E39 OBC low cluster unlock (coolant temp, batt. voltage, etc.)

This video demonstrates how to unlock the test functions found in the E39 BMW models equipped with the "low" gauge cluster or on board computer (OBC). Here's a full list of the test functions available:
Test 01. Vehicle specific data
1.0 VIN
1.1 K-value
1.2 Part number of cluster
1.3 Coding/Diagnosis/Bus Index
1.4 Manufacturing date (calender week/year)
1.5 Hardware/software # of cluster (HW:XX, SW:X.XX)
1.6 Injection status, number of cylinders, engine factor
Test 02. Cluster System Test - activates the gauge drives, indicators and LEDs to confirm function
Test 03. SI Data
3.0 Liters
3.1 Periodic inspection days (not applicable for U.S.)
Test 04. Momentary Consumption
4.0 XX.X liters/1000km
4.1 X.X liters per hour
Test 05. Distance Gone Consumption
5.0 XX.X liters/100km
5.1 momentary distance to go (XXXkm)
Test 06. Fuel Level Sensor inputs in liters
6.0 Fuel level average (LH sensor input = XX.X liters, RH sensor input = XX.X liters)
6.1 Total tank level averaged XX.X liters
6.2 indicated value and tank phase (1 = both sensors OK, 2 = one sensor fault, 3 = implausible input)

Display changes from "L-ON" to "L-OFF" every second. To unlock test functions, press the cluster button immediately when it changes to "L-OFF". Test are automatically locked when exiting test functions.
Test 20 Average fuel consumption - correction factor
The factor follows previous systems, with adjustment range of 750 to 1250. The adjustment method is new for the base cluster. If adjustment is necessary, enter into test 20 using the cluster button.
The correction factor number is changed by using the sub-tests for the "ones, tenths and hundreds of the factor number. The digits will automatically scroll through 0-9 within each group (ones, tenths, hundreds).
20.0 Press the button to reset display to 1000
20.1 Press the button when the correct "ones" position is attained
20.2 Press the button when the correct "tenths" position is attained.
20.3 Press the button when the correct "hundreds" position is attained.

Your welcome. And yes, left hand usually means driver side unless you live in a country where the driver sits on the right.

Hi there. I don't think the reset will help fix your issue. Have you replaced both fuel sending units (level sensors) as well? I believe most E39 models have two sending units, one on the driver side and another on the passenger side.

I have a problem on my cluster for my 2002 530I .even I bought the car the cluster worked fine but a few days later I noticed the car diagram that displays which door is ajar no longer works. I bought bulbs online as changed all five bulbs. it only shows like light in the background and a few green bars everything else functions.

Sounds like you're having the same problem another commenter (Jenny B-girl) had. Maybe you could reply to her comment and see if she managed to fix it or get it fixed. I'm not sure what the cause of the problem is so I wouldn't be of much help.

I see u got some lights on dashboard while ingition is on. I got the battery one and oil sign too. When i turn car on,there will be no those lights on anymore. Do i have a battery and something with oil fault? Why those stay while ingiton is on?

This is normal operation. When the ignition is on but engine is off, oil pressure indicator and battery indicator will stay on since there is no oil pressure and alternator is not generating electricity. Once you start the engine, both lights will turn off if everything is functioning normally.

Oil service light. When it’s reset after oil change it should show four or five lights and goes down as it gets closer to next service as miles increase.

I have 1 question , im dieing to find out why my e39 525 dosent have that lil car on screen , i mean whend u open the doors or you have 1 open car , that lil yellow/orange car pops up .. I dont have it ( i mean i have it but never turns on) You have any ideea if its dezactivated or something ?

That's odd. There could be a number of reasons why that is. Is there anything else in your cluster that isn't working? Because I doubt it's because every door switch on your car is broken. That's extremely unlikely.

Nope , acctualy mostly works perfect. The B/C button dosent work as well , even if i press it dosent do anything. I think it may be dezactivated or something , i have no ideea , i have this car for about 1 week. And everyday im seeing something different.

SKINHEAD DOG Even 66 degrees is colder than it should be. I let my car sit for a bit before I did this video. If the car is at operating temperature, the value should be in the 90s.

What do you mean by pre heat signs? Are you talking about the indicator for the glow plugs?

@@boxlight2888 If it's a gasoline engine, start it whenever you want. If it's a diesel, wait until the glow plug light turns off before starting the car.

What are those three green bars? Is that a battery level? I only have two of them, does that mean that I need to replace my battery?

No. Those lights are the "Service Interval Indicator". You're supposed to reset those lights whenever you perform a service (oil change) on your car. When they have been reset, there will be 5 green lights. As they go out, that means you're getting closer and closer to having to change your oil again. Thanks a lot! I just bought the car yesterday. I've also got other problem. Basically, the hazard light switch/button is lightened up all the time, even when I turn off the car and turn the lights off. Might that say something to you? If you would know what to do... man... Im subbing now haha :)

Samuel Zająkała Have you tried removing the switch, unplugging it and plugging it back in? It worked for one of the guys who had the same problem you're describing on Bimmer Forums. If that doesn't fix it, maybe you'll have to get a new switch. Fortunately I don't think they're too expensive if that's the case.
