The 6-cylinder E46s are insanely realiable cars. With a few usually minor replacements every few years, this car can run easily 300.000 kms and more.

I bought one for 3k then sunk 4,500 into including a new ac system but it’s been a blast to drive. Honestly, I also own a Porsche and bought this to just tool around in but I’ve enjoyed it so much. Fully agree, E46 BMWs are excellent vehicles, in my opinion the best 3 series made thus far. I still drive my 328i with 212,000km in mint condition & it runs like clockwork and I have no plans to replace it. Regular Servicing, replacing parts when they need replacing is the key & you won’t have huge maintenance costs.

Great short vid with excellent explaination. You've covered the e46 and issues well and as a current e46 owner would like to respectfully add a couple things I have found to consider if you are buying an convertible. My 05 325ci was not updated nor taken care of outside of the oil changes and I have dumped maybe 8/9k into parts only repairs with some of this into the convertible related components, and still not finished. Examples would be the locking motor and/or rear drive motor and electrical harness with positioning micro switches. Also composite worm guide blocks for left/right side locking mechs and additional misc hardwares. I am cleaning my canvas top but beware if you need to replace that canvas and water guard protector beneath it you can be looking at a pretty hefty price tag just for convertible sid eof things if you do the labor. Patr of my expenditures include new wheel/tire package (rufly 2.5k and new BC racing coils-br 1.1k, headlights like new left/right aprx. 900.00 ebay and entire cooling system update/install except heater core about 1.7k, complete ccv with intake seal, disa valve repair kit, throttle body seal, new intake boots and clamps and many other misc components did add up. Keeping in mind I have done ALL my own work, oh and also new exhaust gaskets w/donuts and harware. Add recently Windshield coweling, cam cover gasket and hardware, vac. distribution bar w/seals, new coils and plugs, windshield washer pump and seal, AC seals and condensor coil and eng bay airbox seals, antenna assy, rear tail light and park light assys, jack blocks and I know im missing a few things but you get the point. I may have gone further than most ppl would have but take pride in restoring someone elses trash back to a respectible vehicle. I do enjoy but never expected such a price tag to go along with it. Moral of story...I didn't have vehicle looked over very well and only saw a cheap upfront cost which cost me greatly later. However I own it now and I did what it took to bring it to an original condition. At this point it is not a wise investment but a price paid for fun journey with a decent ride I like. Good Luck to those looking, that your repairs are not this extensive, lol. OH, lol, forgto to add interior parts, center console with shift boot and etc parts also glove box latch and working on central locking sys, with window switches etc. Hazard switch and cluster switches not yet but needs.

Great Video! Unfortunately I’m in e46 Purgatory! Bought a two owner 2005 330xi 188k miles clean history, needed a drive shaft. That problem was masking a vibration I’ve been chasing ever since! It’s fully optioned (Sport/Premium/Cold Weather packages!) Vibration starts at 60mph, peaks at 80mph and quiets down above 110 mph! Last thing to do are the front hubs/bearings. It truly is THE most incredibly handling sedan with the 37/63 full time AWD! Bought it for 3100, I’ve put another 3900 into it and once this last fix is done I’ll rent it out on TURO until I get all my repairs back then attack that darn vibration again! Honestly, I believe this particular fully optioned e46 will eventually be known as one of BMW’s greatest all-time secret performance sleepers! I don’t see ever selling it! Too much fun!

I had a 2003 330i individual. It was my first BMW and started my love affair. I love all my newer cars, but none have hit all the buttons quite like my 330i. I drove it hard every day, and it gave me very few issues up until I sold it at 220 000kms. Regular oil changes and don't let maintenance issues linger. It was even surprisingly light on fuel. I consider buying one again quite often, but I've become a convertible man and finding an e46 vert with a manual box is not easy.

I still have my 2003 330i, sat in the driveway for a long while but as I test drove cars I kept finding that none gave me the same joy. I test drove a Tesla model 3 and though faster it didn’t feel anything more and I was sliding in the seats on turns, then tested the m340i, again more power and a nice interior but I wasn’t feeling connected to the car and nothing close to the same joy. So A few years ago started fixing it up again and man am I happy. There is a reason this car got so many god reviews when it came out though some didn’t like the looks. It’s got enough computer without taking that personal connection away and handles so beautifully. Still have to replace a lot of parts but don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it. I am truly amazed they haven’t gone up in price yet, everyone is distracted by other models and really not understanding the drive quality on this little gem.

I've learned that buying cheaper electronics in these cars can make it do weird stuff. For example, bought a cheaper MAF to save $130. It worked great for a short while, but after a few months, its making my transmission clunk, and lighting up the dash light for transmission (cog with exclamation point) after doing some pulls with some of the locals. I'll be buying an oem MAF here shortly. It just doesn't regulate the air as efficiently as an oem MAF i'm assuming. Great videos man, i love these e46's. They've treated me well also.

Great video. But the only thing you missed is the manual E46 are the ones with the rear subframe tears on the driver side spotwelds due to having more torque and a different flywheel than the automatics. My friend who has owned multiple E46 and is bmw specialist for many years told me about it before I bought my 325i.
@BuzzytheBlue
@BuzzytheBlue 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, so there aren’t any cases of automatic E46s with rear subframe tears? It would certainly make sense as they shift smoothly far more consistently than the average manual driver. Less jarring force being applied to the diff and, in turn, subframe.
@corkscrewlifestyle
@corkscrewlifestyle 4 жыл бұрын
@@BuzzytheBlue Yea from what I've seen and heard from BMW vetereans. The ones that I've seen and recorded were manuals were all destroyed in the rear. All the ones with the rear frame issue were manuals because they shifted harder but also had greater torque curves and had different parts like clutch and flywheels. My friend Aaron thats been a BMW specialist since the 70s told me about that when buying a E36 or E46 with a stick shift. He's know his knowledge when it comes to the old 3ers from E30 to the new G chassis. Great guy with true knowledge.

@BuzzytheBlue
@BuzzytheBlue 4 жыл бұрын
Danny Nguyen At 300k miles, any wearable components that haven’t been replaced would need to be. Every stock bushing should be changed, cooling system refreshed, countless other things. Unless the car comes with an extremely thorough maintenance history that spans the last 100k miles of its life, I’d steer waaaay clear. Money pit. And Ci just signifies that it’s a coupe.
@corkscrewlifestyle
@corkscrewlifestyle 4 жыл бұрын
I'd search for a lower mileage example. Owning a car depends on much you as the future owner are willing to put into it. When I bought mine, I'd always look at the number of door dents to see how the ower loves the car. Bought my 325i Facelift with 94k miles and put $400 into it the first year. I'd just find one with lower mileage that is a 2002-2005 E46. They would usually fetch around $3K-$4,500 depending on the seller.

This was a very helpful video thank you. I have a family friend that owns a shop and is getting very old so he wants to get rid of his e46 325i and will sell it to me for 1k (I could probably talk him down to 800). It currently has 170k miles on it and was well maintained by its original owner for the majority of its life. The past two years or so it has been sitting and has gotten very little road use. There is a small crack in the windshield, there is a dent on the front right fender, and it will defiantly need detailing and general maintenance. I have no problem fixing it up on my own but I don't want to go broke because of random malfunctions if possible. Do you think this is a good investment or should I keep searching?
@BuzzytheBlue

If you can confirm that it’s mechanically sound through your own/someone else’s inspection, and a thorough test drive, I’d say that’s a killer deal! Assuming it’s been maintained as well as you say, and doesn’t have any obvious red flags mechanically, that mileage is no issue.

I think the e46s are very good cars. They have excellent choices of l6 engines, very smooth, robust and has great long-term reliability. They are far from trouble free, however. Regular repairs and maintenance works should be expected. If you are not mechanical incline, can't or not willing to do work more than oil change yourself, they are probably not a good car for you and for sure will break your bank if you regularly take it to the shop. But for people who like to do their own work on cars, they are excellent. Relatively easy to work on, lots of online resources and community support, and parts are abundant new and used and reasonably priced.

It’s less so engine related and moreso that ANY car at very high mileage is going to begin needing a range of repairs from suspension to electrical to cooling. But maintenance is king, if you’re looking at a high mileage example, it needs to have a LOT of maintenance records and preferably be buying it from a long term owner. Otherwise keep the mileage around 100,000 or kilometer equivalent.

I asked at my local independent garage (where I have my E46 320d serviced) and the BMW franchise dealer about cooling system failures in the UK. They both said it was not a common issue over here. So my question is; does the cooling system problem generally affect the 6-cylinder BMWs that are common in the US?
@BuzzytheBlue
@BuzzytheBlue Жыл бұрын
It is pretty prevalent here with E46/E39 era cars here. However, a lot of the issues can be attributed to the poor aging of the plastics/rubbers found in the cooling systems. Expansion tanks and hoses etc just become unreliably brittle/delicate after 20+ years. How bad it happens could even be effected by environment (whether the car is garaged, where it is driven etc).

@@michaelanderson001 It's a real problem anywhere it's just that people aren't taking 20 year old bangers to a BMW dealer. These cars are badly designed too and won't give you any warning when they overheat so when it happens most cars will go straight to the scrapyard. I'd say 6 cylinders would be more effected because they're bought by people who drive them hard and put more stress on everything.

If you mean you’ve had to invest $4,000 worth of repairs into it then you didn’t get a great deal. I did a similar thing with a $2,300 325xi, bought the car cheap but invested way too much money into it. When all was said and done, I could have just bought a nicer 325xi or even 330xi that wouldn’t have needed anything. It’s a lesson learned. Piece of advice though, with that much invested, keep the car! Don’t sell it unless you can recoup a lot of the money. I made that mistake and regret it.

Really depends on the car itself man, to put it simply if we are comparing an E46 and say a 2010 BMW. Having owned an E60, E90, and two E46’s I can say that the interior quality of the E46 is likely the best, followed closely by the E90 and then the E60. The E46 interior has aged far more gracefully. If I had to make a recommendation, it would be to get a face lifted E90 (LCI) with a loaded interior (better leather sport seats etc). It will feel more special and modern. Well it’s certainly an exceptionally low mileage car! To be completely honest though, I don’t personally think I’d pay $15,000 for any 325. Particularly one with the SMG transmission (didn’t even know that was an option on them). That transmission has not aged well even in high horsepower cars like the M5 or M3. I think it introduces complexity and poor drivability to a car that was perfect with the regular auto/manual options.

Reliable? If you do a few things. 3 main things to do by 100k miles or earlier is water pump, coolant reservoir expansion tank, serpentine/fan belt. any one of these 3 things failing on the road will lead to being stranded and potential catastrophic engine failure without warning. and one of these 3 WILL fail without pre-emptive maintenance. everything else, you'll have some warning via dash, engine light codes or you can hear it and at least give you time to take it to the garage.

Buzzy: e46 is very reliable you just have to fix this and that or your car will eat plastic and die. You have to rebuild your frame. Just cost $10 000+ for everything. I Recommend you to buy this car. ME: This car sound dangerous😲😲😲 Owning a Bentley is way cheaper.😎👌

Lol no. It’s like $1800 to reinforce the subframe. And it’s a one time thing that most base E46s likely don’t even need. The “eat plastic and die” is a $150, 10 minute fix as well. So 🤷🏻‍♂️ A turbo failure on a Bentley 4.0T would cost more than both E46s I’ve owned combined 😂
