Symptoms start when you notice "sluggish starting". Like it started ok but it seems to take 1 or 2 seconds more than it used to. Not all the time but enough you notice. That will progress to intermittent starting. Like it cranks n dies but will turn over and stay running on the second try. That will then turn into crank no start. (Will crank & crank may start but quickly dies followed by constant crank but no start) Jumping the car will get you going. Next parasitic drain. (Drive around sll day with no issue. Next morning the battery is dead.

NEVER NEVER SAY YOU'RE dumb or stupid, matter of fact you're quite intelligent to figure it out and matter of factly BMW is quite the morons for putting such BS in a car for getting groceries and picking up kids etc. .... it's not a rocket to go to the moon ! Thanks too much for your efforts in figuring such a mess and what caused it in the first place, then sharing your findings with us.... much appreciated, God bless you I have 105,000 miles on my 2008 535... l was only able to drive the car 3 months after buying it 15oct2020, it sat at my job for several months before towing it to the BMW dealer "for nothing" The warranty or time for recall on the hpfp had already expired. Now it sits at the shop and the mechanic can't even figure out the problem or at least that's what he tells me anyway. The mechanic tells me there's a chip on a circuit board contained within the fuse box behind the front glove box that's blown so replace the whole front fuse box !.!.! Sound like a load a bullshit to you ? Yah, me too... So far by not knowing the problem I've replaced the hpfp and all 6 injectors.... injectors were the last codes it threw... and there was a recall in the hpfp.... oh n l should add the BMW dealership here in Dallas advised on the service record that it needs a new control module ecu ! and a new battery.... When l'd do 75 on the freeway an engine damage warning would tell me to slow down... I'd back off to 60 and things would go ok then. When I see your video and hear you beat yourself up please don't feel bad, feel proud, you're very smart to figure it out and I feel pretty good that I'll NEVER buy another BMW. Compare: you invested hours, I've invested 16 months and it still does not run ! at this point should I replace the ibs and new battery to see if it starts ? your advice is very helpful indeed, thanks dellthecomputer.9may2022

Thanks for kind words. Positive feedback is allways nice to get and it gives more motivation to keep pushing forward =) But did i get it right that you can drive 60mph but in 75mph you start geting those faultcodes? What are the codes ? And i dont belive that IBS sensor helps you. It just tells ecu how much is electicity used and spanks alternator to word harder if needed
@de77thecomputer2 жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicMechanicFinland I'd get the Huge PLEASE REDUCE SPEED WARNING ACROSS THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER when it ran... I'd calm down and just crawl at 60 then things would be ok. One day, one morning leaving work it started, put it in drive, drove 50 feet then died, hasn't run since. That was 16 months ago not being able to figure out the problem till l saw your video... same gasket problem for the trunk however I'm not 100% certain that there was ever any water in the trunk... Atfer what I've learned from you it's certainly worth a shot to replace the ibs and/or that module that sits in the bottom of the trunk. Why would it just stall like that then never run again in 16 months ?.? Ok if ibs never sends signal to the ecu to "wake up" then it's like a dead camshaft position sensor, the car doesn't know "how" to start without ecu, the ecu is dead in the water just floating out there with no signal to "wake up" ! Makes sense to me even though it's major league stupid from BMW for such a design to cause such havoc in my life... l promise to never buy a piece of trash again, it's all my fault, I'm so stupid for such an investment.... Thanks for your time and response, I really appreciate it dellthecomputer.09may2022

I’ve had 2 bmws so far that killed the battery one after a day and one after 15 mins turns out it was the Ibs sensor for both, what I found out was that jumping the car directly from the battery over amps the Ibs sensor and fries it so, replaced Ibs sensors on both vehicles and so far no comebacks on discharged batteries.
@BEAMERNOOB9 ай бұрын
I don’t understand how that would make any difference. The positive terminal under the hood is directly connected to the positive terminal on the battery, the negative post under the hood is attached directly to the chassis and the negative battery terminal is attached directly to the chassis. Might as well be basically a longer jump cable attached to the battery, no difference. It’s the low voltage that kills the modules not high “over current from jumping the posts directly at the battery”. Low voltage means the amps go way up.
@schunacher Жыл бұрын
Can you explain a little bit about the resistance value? You are measuring to ground and the resistance is 400 Ohms and you say that that is enough to meet spec (19 Ohms) but after you fix the problem the resistance goes to 1.7K Ohms which fixes your problem (disconnected is 200K Ohms). Did you mean to say that 400 Ohms doesn't meet spec (not enough to stop the wake up from going to ground) and maybe you meant to say that spec is 19K Ohms?
@ElectronicMechanicFinland Жыл бұрын
Hi. It was fun adventure to hinta this broblen but yes. That wire is Power train canbus modules wakeup. Similar what you can found on car audio amplifiers. There is plenty off controll modules on canbus and they are on sleep mode to prevent battery drainage and they Will Be waked up by aplying 12v to this wire. And If resitance to ground is low then module what is generating that voltage Will go to fault state becouse it dont have enough power delivery capacity to raise voltage up to 12. And If wakeup line is not hot then modules keep sleeping and car is unable to start. But what is right value to te measurment . Now afterwards i would say anything over 1k Ohm should Be enough but 400 Ohm and less are indicating trouble.... If i remember right you can deattach wakeupwire on trunk and measure resitance to ground. (Just ibs).

Very good video. I succeeded in getting a friend's e60 started by disconnecting the Ibs. I initially thought it was an engine ground issue as the battery measured 11.9 volts but the measurement on the positive terminal on the engine and frame was only 5 volts. Would the Ibs cause this voltage imbalance?
@ElectronicMechanicFinland Жыл бұрын
I m sorry but where you measured 5v i did not fully understand what you mean
@bmw-e30 Жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicMechanicFinland There is a positive terminal on top of the engine (used for jump starting). I only measured 5 volts between this terminal and the body of the car. The battery in the boot though showed almost 12 volts.
@ElectronicMechanicFinland Жыл бұрын
@@bmw-e30 in that case you might have faulty positive cable from battery tray to enginebay. I have heard that point where battery positive wire exits from battery tray and enters under The car is somehow rotted broken under The car . Or another fault point might be that positive terminal on battery. There is somekind explosive disconnector what can cut positive wire If wehicle is crashed.. i assume that jump start tab on engine Bay is hooked directrly to main positive on starter motor or alternator so it really should measure pretty much exaxatly same voltage as battery

You have an e60 54”. Never had any issue before with the battery until about a month ago. After not using the car and heavy rain, the car wouldn’t start. Also water has seeped through the back driver passenger side( quite a lot of water). I’ve sorted the window seal out and no more water came. However, I’ve suspected the car not starting to be a battery issue but it’s not. I had 3 new batteries in, which will charge when driving but after 1 day alarm will go off and battery has died. Car will also go sleep after 15 mins. We’ve checked the car for paralistic draw but none detected. After researching I’ve came across the IBS which could have been damaged as initially there was a tiny bit of water in the trunk next to the battery. Before I change the IBS could someone advise please. Thank you
@ElectronicMechanicFinland Жыл бұрын
I am sorry about delay in My reply. I somehow missed your question. If you have chance to obd diagnostic that i suggest first. But If. Not then My advice is disconnect The battery capacity sensor wakeup wire as i did. If i remember right that IBS sensor is battery negative terminal and that device in positive terminal is explosive Power Cable disconnecting device what Will disconnect positive terminal If car crashes. I dont know witch can bus is that explosive disconnector connected but IBS sensor is pt canbus so it can communicate directly to engine and transmission. And If IBS sensor is faulty it might cause connication error to whole pt canbus or pull down The pt canbus wakeup line what causes issue that Any device on that can network are on sleep mode and dont wake at all.

I Forget to say but wery bottom under spare wheel is canbus control modules and If Waters Get to trunk it usually flood theese modules and it make your car to Bumblebee. It might help. But propper way to diagnose draining battery is figure out where power is going.. i have hooked the multimeter to current mode and putted it 10amp range. And between battery negative and ground lead. You can not turn anything on in car because meter will melt or blow fuse but typical slow drain current is somethin near 1 amp.... When meter is hooked you can see that drainage current and start taking fuses of one by one and check when current lowers in meter . That way you can narrow whole car to just one spesific sysyem and fault finding gets easier
