good video I got my fluid changed e65 had huge issues with transmission jerking revving etc I thought it is mechanical and kept going from one mechanic to another learnt it hard way fluid is the most important thing and the level should be right and good condition most issues will be resolved

I just did the transmission drain and pan/filter replacement this last weekend. I also replaced my guibo/flex disc at the same time. Thanks for your videos on both!I found that 90% of the 20 some T27 bolts on the transmission were seized up tight. I ended up have to smack the side of the head of each of these bolts with a chisel so I had a good side notch on the side of the bolt head. I then turned the chisel about 45 degrees in the notch I had made and whacked them a couple of times to start driving them to the left until they had turned about 1/4 turn....only then would the T27 turn them without stripping them out or breaking the tip of the bit off. Using the chisel worked kind of like an impact gun would to break loose a stubborn bolt.Once the bolts were all broken free it was a pretty straight forward job. I put about 4 quarts of Castrol multi-car import transmission fluid in it before it was leaking out the fill hole. I loosely inserted the fill plug, started the car and brought it up to temp. and then opened her back up and was sable to get another 1-2 quarts in the transmission before I had a steady stream of fluid pouring from the fill hole which I quickly plugs and tightened down.Thanks again for all the great videos and tips!

Appreciate the video's ! I just changed my '06 750i transmission fluid a second time. I am the 3rd owner. I have 146,000 miles now. Did a previous change 18 months ago at 120,000. I called Valvoline and asked if their MAX LIFE trans. fluid is compatible with the ZF transmission. Was told by the Valvoline tech people that Max Life Valvoline fluid meets and exceeds the Shell M 1375.4 fluid. It is likely that the Shell M 1375.4 fluid is the factory fluid when these cars were new. I personally do NOT believe that buying transmission fluid from BMW makes any sense at all. BMW does not make transmission fluid, but offers Shell, ZF and other brands marketed in their own bottles. In my previous fluid change I used Castrol Transmax fluid. I offer the following info. in with the hope it may help others. Both times when I changed the fluid, I simply dropped the drain plug and changed the fluid only. I have not dropped the pan and did a pan and filter change (the pan and filter are one unit). When you first drop the drain plug, I believe it is probably correct that you will get about 3 quarts of old trans. oil fluid to drain. I believe it is important to pump in new fluid ( I use a Kerosene heater oil type of pump for this job ) until the fill plug begins to overflow. Re-install again the fill plug (just snug, not tight), then start the car with the brake pedal engaged at all times, and shift thru the gears from Park, to Reverse, to Drive many times (for 2 or maybe 3 minutes is sufficient) to insure full circulation of the trans. fluid. Then put the car in park, with engine still idling. Place a soaked in water wash cloth or hand towel (so you do NOT burn your hand and arm!! ) on the now hot exhaust pipe which is inconveniently next to the transmission drain fill plug on E65 and E66 cars. Remove the refill plug again. I added another 2.3 quarts into the transmission. If you do not follow this procedure, I believe you will be approx. 2 or 2.5 quarts low on transmission fluid. After my first change at 120,000 miles, I did not do as I recommend above by shifting from Park, to Reverse to Drive for 2 or 3 minutes after the first fill. And over the last year and a half I have I experienced poor shifting, and some worrisome clunking when the car is in automatic shift mode and downshifts from 3rd to 2nd, and 2nd to 1st gears (pulling up a fairly steep incline while coming to a stop). I believe this is because my car was actually 2 or 2.5 quarts low of fluid. Now, my car is silky smooth and crisp in all shifts, including the troublesome down shifts experienced before, when I did NOT have enough fluid in my transmission. For any of you concerned that I have not changed the filter, I will do so in another 25,000 or 30,000 miles. My fluid looks extremely clean, but that is because my car has had 3 transmission fluid changes in 146,000 miles. I believe it is totally imperative to add fluid a second time after the initial drain. If you don't, you will likely experience poor shifting, clunking and jerking as these ZF Transmissions do NOT enjoy being low in fluid. I will close by saying that BMW's claim that their cars have "lifetime" fluid is a total joke. If you want to lose confidence in BMW, this issue is a good place to start. Every car in the world should have a transmission dipstick. The fact is that much research has shown that even the best transmission fluids don't work as designed after 60,000 miles, regardless of brands or driving conditions. Heat cycles and extremes kill transmission fluid. Good luck, all !

The correct tool required for removing the oil fill plug is a " 8 mm Hex" not a T50 ... A t50 can strip the fill plug.

Missed your videos. Oil changes are an important part of keeping any transmission going. Lifetime fill is just an accounts approach based on the expected life of the car. It is also worth looking at live data on the ECU to check the oil temp. Also on these the gaskets between the VB and transmission can leak pressure as they harden.

Blowing smoke out is often caused by bad valve stem seals. Transmission Failsafe: read error codes. Could be a bad gasked between mechatronics and transmission (mechatronics unit needs to be dropped - Easy repair !)

I was thinking about how much fluid it would take to have some reasonable percentage of new fluid, it works out that if you have 5 quarts in the torque converter and 4 in the pan then each time you replace the fluid you have 5/9 of old fluid. So that works out to {5/9, 25/81, 125/729, 625/6561, 3125/59049} for each change... so even after the 4th change you still end up with 10% of the old fluid in the engine.. it really takes 5 changes to bring this down to a negligible amount 3125/59049 is a small number. Thats a lot of fluid.

Interesting that you had to pump so much back in. Typically at least half of it will stay in the torque converter. So to flush manually. Fill, drive the car a few miles, drain, then and fill again.

The King a complete flush like that I would run it every 75k or so, some might say 100k, others would say 50k. If you have the time and money then I would run between 50-75k to keep it fresh. hope this helps & thanks for watching:)

I have a problem were my e65 just shifted to "p" and won't go on reverse or drive. I did buy the service kit, and the megatronic sleeve was broken. But I'm unsure on how much fluid I need to put back in. I put 5 liters cause that's were it started to stream out. But my car still don't shift. Should I tip the car sideways and put another liter and a half. I was told it needed 6.5 liters.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I'm a first time BMW owner. I bought a 2006 750i. Having these videos is going to save me so much $$$$$. I will be donating soon. My transmission does the sticky downshift from 2-1. So I'm going to replace the guibo joint soon following your video. I'm also at 111,000 miles, so I think I'm going to do this transmission flush and many replace the Bridge seal adapter, which I have seen on the forum can restore some smoothness as they crack with time. I have one thing that has happened twice I want to ask you about: when at a red light, if we really try to take of fast, the RPM's go to 6 and the car is like a bull your trying to ride for 8 seconds. Then it finally gets into the right gear. Makes us a little gun shy. Ever heard of this? Thanks, Christian

Christian Charette Hello, awesome I'm glad the videos can help, yes that is a great idea to do the bridge seal adapter when your flushing, I can't remember but others say to do one more cheap part step as well when flushing, I never did but again they say it restores smoothness to changing gears. Yes I myself have experienced this also the 8 seconds riding the bull, I really don't ever drive to fast so I don't really experience it, but it might be the guibo or design flaw, I'm not 100% sure. I had to use a hand chisel and cut a notch in the side of the fill bolt then I bought a small air chisel at Harbour freight for 10 bucs and placed the chisel right in the notch and chiseled it a couple times and the bolts spun loose ...I call BMW and they said the fill bolt is NOT A T50 torque...Its a 8MM ...Hope that helps Your videos are so GOOD im going to try the Guibo job next ....THANKS AGAIN ....

ATTENTION!! I own a Bmw 2009 528xi , one day the trans was shifiting really slow every morning for 3 days untill it warmed up. I thought it was because of the cold, 4th day it would not go into reverse! After trying for a while it did and once it drrove for couple blocks it shifted fine. Next morning i bring it to my mecanic again no reverse bad shifting i thought my transmision was shot! We pull off covers and he took out fill plug NOTHING COMING OUT! He was able to put 2 quarts into the transmision and look for leaks. 1 month ago i scrabed the bottom on my friends broke driveway , it put a HAIRLINE scratch in the plastic oil pan and 1 small drop was coming out every 2 minutes from the crack. He refilled i drove for 1 day next morning runs perfect. We ordered new pan oil kit for trans and will be installing. Hope this helps anyone!!!! Good luck!

Tj Ibarra Hello, it's either your upper timing chain gasket I believe its called, if it was your drivers side I'd say it was the alternator bracket gasket but that again is on the drivers side, open the hood and look on the passenger side of the engine to the right of the coolant expansion tank and also to the right of were you would put oil in the engine see if you see any leak from a little crack in that area, those gaskets go bad and leak mines doing the same thing, I will hopefully have a video up soon about that:)

I'm not sure if you are using the correct type of oil, 6HP oil color is not red, it's like engine oil in color. That is why you replaced it for about 3 times, cause the original is not that dark but it's not RED :) ,, . Wish you a best of luck I learned many things from your videos.

They are life time transmissions. but they come with drain and filler plugs.BMW Dealership says do not change transmission fluid, will damage transmission.IF you DON"T change fluid will damage my guess:):) right? Carlos Arias I ordered 12 and had about 2.5 left over. so I guess'I'mate about 9.5 but better order extra just in case, if you spill one it's a pain having to stop your work and head to the store if it's even open to get the same one, most stores don't carry the D4, a few do but not many, and they charge a lot.
