Thanks for supplying your car for reviewing. Put aside what savagegeese said, what do you think of the car? Did you cross shop other cars? Personally, reliability is the major thing stopping me from buying a BMW, if this generation turns out to be substantially reliable than previous gen, I may actually end up getting a used one.

I daily drive my 2018 M3 (non competition) with DCT and an AWE Track Exhaust, and I completely agree with this review! “It’s trying to be all things to all people” is such a perfect statement for this car. It’s a fantastic daily, fantastic car to drive the back roads on, and emotionally it excites me, when I open the garage door and I see it sitting there it makes me do a double-take cuz those fenders flares are just so damn good to look at, but there’s somehow a missing factor to it that just doesn’t hit me the way I want it to. Don’t get me wrong, it’s the perfect daily, but a part of me wants a vehicle that fucks me up in a good way! Overall though, it’s a no brainer type of purchase. I just happen to want a toxic relationship when it comes to a car 😂

This is the best analysis of this car. I have considered parking one of these next to my E92, but I run my business from home and don't have any sort of commute, so most of my driving is backroads cruising or on track at RA or Blackhawk and for spirited driving and thrills I still prefer my supercharged E92 despite the fact that it's a ticking timebomb. For my 'reliable' car I opted for a 2019 Type R which I absolutely love. Something interesting that you didn't mention in the video (and maybe people disagree with me here) - I just don't think there is anything very memorable about the F80. I guess maybe when you talk about how sterile it is, that could be the argument I'm making right there just phrased differently. Yes it's a good all-around car but there is nothing really bespoke about it that evokes any emotional connection IMO. It isn't exactly abnormal or that impressive for a higher end turbo power plant to put down big numbers and run 9s in this day and age. That's not really an accomplishment. Thinking back to when the E46 M3 first came out with the impressive hp/liter of displacement in that inline 6 was impressive, for example. When automotive history looks back, what's it going to remember? Will anyone care about the F80 or will it be "just another turbo car of the 2010s decade"? I am betting no one will care about it very much. Still it is a very capable car and perhaps in some ways it is the epitome thus far of BMW's traditional M3 angle which is to be a daily-drivable sports car that does everything well. The F80 is probably the best expression of that to date. It's never been a pure sports car, but this iteration is probably the closest it has gotten to being the most balanced between practicality, reliability, and performance.
@Sheiza
@Sheiza 5 жыл бұрын
100% agree with you, when im talking about M cars, or M3 in general, I tend to forget the f80 even exists, because its just another zippy computerized turbo car to run around the city, nothing more. sure its great, has plenty of power, its somewhat comfortable, but when you park it, it doesn't make you look back, because its just an everyday car, while my e46 hasn't failed that task in 8 years. I still get goosebumps when I accelerate, go into corner with pedal jammed to the floor and I have to wrestle with the steering wheel. in my eyes e9x platform will always be the last generation of the real M3.
@jwardTLS
@jwardTLS 5 жыл бұрын
Nick Davis I sold my e46 to a buddy across town. That generation was the pinnacle of balance between raw bmw feel and comfort. Love my e92 for the s65 but e46 just drives so well. I’ll buy another one someday in Imola to match my Melbourne e92.
@Sheiza

StopTheH8GetAV8 believe me e92 has no less handling than the e46, those cars are so different from each other, hell one has 2 more cylinders, yet they have that raw feel older M cars had.. now they stick forced induction to everything and that feeling is gone

Returned my M3C lease a few months ago...what I'll remember most vividly is doing a full 50 minutes on track at the NCM Motorsports Park (Corvette Museum) without so much of a hiccup. While it doesn't have the classic V8 (or even the N55) sound, the engine and DCT are still excellent and perform quite well in the duty purpose environment. Customizing vehicle settings via "coding" was entertaining and allowed the car to have Euro-only features (used ADB for many years in the US) and have more track-focused performance (GTS DCT tuning, CS EDC/DSC/EPS, etc.). It had a functional infotainment system (looking at your Lexus) and enough safety and convenience features to make daily use easy. Averaging 23 mpg over 36k miles didn't hurt either. It doesn't have the lovable size of the M2 but it looks good from just about every angle. Also, depreciation of the F8X series is quite steep at the moment allowing for a pretty good bargain IMHO. Not the best or worst, but memorable for those who have owned one, and likely for those who will in the future.

The discussion on the drama or lack there of, is really why I like this car so much and want one. You know what's funny? Your video convinced me to get one. If you are looking for a M car that more track focused than the street focused (comfort, size), this checks my box. I've had mine for almost 2 years now and I still love it. Carries 4 and allows you to be an axe murderer on the streets and wail on the track should you want to with little compromise compared to the earlier gens, who always had imo some set of flaws (actuators, valve controllers, water pumps etc). Before people bring up that crank hub stuff, most of those who talk about it, don't own one. The problem is quite overblown. It does occur on stock cars (~3%), but if you want to unleash power (>550-600hp), do the hub. It's not expensive for a car of this level. I've done it as I'm got some tuning, but it was more for longevity and reliability. Other than that? Bulletproof.

I live in the city and the roads are a minefield of potholes, patchwork, and manhole covers. While stiff, this F80 M3 rides 10x better than my old E90. I used to be able to feel (and hear) every little pebble in my E90 and it was pretty miserable around town. Yes, the F80 sounds pretty bad but most of the noise you're hearing in the video is actually fake. Luckily, the fake sound can be turned off with an app, or by physically disconnecting the system. I use the app because I can toggle it on or off. The car actually sounds better - but almost too quiet - with the fake sound turned off. I agree that the car has too much power for RWD as it really struggles to put the power down. In the summer, I can't floor it in 1st gear without triggering the traction control. Now that it's winter, it struggles to put the power down in 2nd gear as well - even when the roads are dry!

The F80 is a serious car for serious drivers. Precision and accuracy and the fact that it doesnt have a main weak point is what the M3 badge is all about. Just because you cant find a flaw doesnt mean it isnt a beautiful car. Id look back at it each time i parked it. German engineering at its finest with this one.

A tune and the manual transmission makes this car so incredibly fun to me. Mine is running bm3 stage 2 which is around 550hp crank with just some down pipes. The motor really is incredible and the car is a drifting machine. The mind blowing speed and looks make this one of the best cars at this price point.

While the E90 is like one-night stand in whom you're lost in the trill of emotions, lust and obsession but with whom you're unlikely to forge a long-term relationship due to unreliability, the F80 is like an arranged marriage - sterile at the start and somewhat disconnected but blossoms into a compelling blissful, somewhat wholesome, requited intimacy.

Great review. I have an F80 M3 and love the car and think with a few modifications you can really bring out the best in the vehicle. Changing the exhaust is a must as it sounds terrible stock, adding catless downpipes and a performance tune truly changes the whole car for under $1,500. The engine has a lot of potential but BMW really held it back. The gearbox is amazing but the car does have a tendency to lose the back end making it a little crazy to drive. It is awfully fun to outrun almost anything on the road with 3 friends in the car though. I just found your channel and now you have a new subscriber. Great job!

At 24:25 is where the money shot is and many thanks to Mark and Jack for calling this out. The unpredictability of turbocharged motors has gotten silly, and it seems like it's especially the case with this car. Saab was notorious for this, but those cars didn't have insane power, nor did they give you all the boost with a slight tip in of the throttle. That meant you could drive a Saab 900/0 smoothly when you wanted to. My E91 is like this. Smooth, progressive, linear power. But you guys shouldn't be using the word 'reliable' in a BMW review. Like every new BMW, this thing will turn to crap within a year of the warranty expiring.

Great...Great review! Have owned the F80 Dct since 2016 and I couldn't have explained the experience better. The F80 is a great car but has its downfalls just like any car. I wont repeat what you were saying in the video but with that being said the G80 awd should fix some of the issues with power efficiency at full throttle. Let's hope the new G80 is a car designed with aesthetics we can appreciate as BMW moves forward with more of a radical design than most M car owners are accustomed to. I know this sounds wierd but I like the early pictures of the new concept design. All things new require some sort of acceptance. The F80 has been purely reliable and a joy to own in conclusion.

I bought an F80 6spd back in 2015 because I was expecting my first child. It would never have been my first choice for an all out sports car because this was never designed to be a single purpose sports car. I consider the F80 the greatest compromise of a family hauler that really hauls. The steering is muted and the sound is OK at best but I’ve learned to like it. The driving dynamics at the limit make me want to be a better driver because the car is so capable. I know most people just want to go out and be flattered by their car but that’s not what the F80 is about and I love that! I can turn off all the electronic nannies and if I nail every shift and manage the torque with my right foot it’s because I did it well. As for the reliability front I have 45k miles on it and it’s still going strong. No squeaks or rattles either which speaks to the build quality. The only concern would be the crank hub if you plan on adding power. But really, spend a few grand on a driving school instead of adding power if you want faster lap times.

For the most part, most drivers would never hit that point where savagegeese is complaining about. I have owned two F8x gen cars and never had any sort of problems with them. As far as most would note on Bimmerpost, the F8x generation cars are the most reliable to come out thus far. The ones that have issues are generally minor ones, even the noted issues are extremely minor. I have friends who are BMW service advisors. They rarely see F80 or F82 with any catastrophic problems. This car would become special only much later on. I'm sure he knows just by looking at all current G generation BMW's. ALL of BMW interiors are now identical, unlike before there were some way to tell them apart. It is all on BMW's cost cutting measure. A G20 3er has an extremely similar interior to a G14 8 series. Other than the M2 Comp, the F8x would also be the last to really rock the M-DCT as, again because of cost cutting, BMW is shoving a ZF8 in everything. The F8x would also be the last to be fully RWD only, AND not have a ugly ass front end that is coming to the G80/G82. I understand the love for leaner power curve that sits with NA engines but those are extremely hard to come by a days. Looking up towards these types of cars only a Lexus would have them or Porsche's GT cars (which are outrageously expensive). However the one advantage the F80/F82 has above the other competitors is that it has a 6 Speed. It is one of the final cars to have them and apparently that won't change because BMW sees the 6MT take rates. G80/G82 will have them too, if you can ignore all of what BMW is doing with their cars that is. For those of you who think about depreciation. Almost all cars depreciate.

Yeah, they won't admit it but any E9x owner has had or still has sleepless nights because their engine could break at any time. Happened to mine as well, cost around 8-10k in service costs. Glad I had it covered by insurance. With my M4 Comp: never any problems and I don't think I will have any before I sell it around 50-60k km. I'm sure it would even reach the 100k km mark without having any major issues. I feel the F8x generation is superior in almost everything, except the sound when downshifting which was way better on the E9x and the M4 also feels way more reliable. Sometimes I race it quite hard but I don't think I have or will ever reach the point where the things mentioned in this video will be dramatically noticeable to me. To me it feels just better. Maybe they should add a point of view from a non pro driver as well in this videos. Would be way more useable for us non pro's.

Only 35,000 produced and discontinued since 2018..go to the bmw website you cant build one anymore. Would be a good time to sell now market is high on twin turbo sedans. Never really drove it very hard, always get great compliments and looks. The brakes squeak from time to time but that's a beamer. Luckily no electrical problems, went through a few tires but had the lifetime warranty. Biggest issue I could recall was a rear differential leak which was covered under warranty and replaced and fix quickly. Extended warranty was cheap, I got full coverage including electrical at the same rate as a regular 3 series beamer.

Every one of this car's has their own strong and week points. I can't understand however that you're calling the BMW the best of them all because the BMW is missing what appears very important to you, and that's feeling special and sound fantastic. Awesome analysis - really great! I too drove an e90 BMW M3 for several years and loved the connected feeling. I swore I'd never own any M outside of warranty and $10k+ of repairs in the first 9 months after my extended warranty expired finally pushed me to look for a replacement in 2017 (mind you, I still have the e90 M3 today - just don't drive it after finding a better substitute.) I wanted 4 doors and a connected feel while being able to have something capable, predictable, and manageable on the track. I test drove EVERYTHING starging with the F80 M3 - was very disappointed (know it's faster, but couldn't 'feel' the car and hated the engine sound.) The only car I found that tingled the senses like the M3 did as a daily and occasional track car in the 2017 Cadillac CTS-V I bought.. Honestly, it's just a bit more in about every good way compared to my beloved e90 (which I think I've driven 2-3 times in the 2.5 years I've had the V!) It's a MUCH more track-focused car and the LT4 has legendary reliability compared to over-stressed M motors which never seem to be produced more than 1-2 generations. I still don't know that I'd want a V without a warranty but I'm 100% certain repairs would be a LOT cheaper than my M! If you're struggling to find a fun ride after your BMW, take a long look at a used CTS-V (or the smaller more nimble ATS-V if the size and dash don't bother you - they did me.) Had the Giulia QV been out at the time I might have gone that route instead of the V but I'd probably be regretting based on what I'm reading about reliability and the long-term viability of Alfa staying in the US...

The CTSV is a bad ass car but the Cadillac factor turns me off to them & GM isn’t known for their amazing reliability either.

I would love to see your guys' opinion on the OG M2. I know you thought the M2C was a little tail happy; I haven't driven it but I have heard from several sources that the OG M2 is more buttoned down. I do know that the original M2 sounds way better, especially with the M-performance exhaust. A side-by-side comparison of the OG M2 and the M2C would be a lot more interesting than I think people would expect. The original M2 may solve a lot of the issues Mark has with the car. Thanks guys!

Love the dynamics of you two, how you guys both bring in the two different perspectives to the table. How come you don't do any Mercedes Product?

The final conclusion is very true I had a 2006 8th gen si and just traded it in for a 2020 si. In the beginning I loved the car but after a month and a half of owning it I just feel like the car is very disconnected. The sounds, the steering, and the feeling of shifting in my opinion was lost over the ten- fifteen year revamps the si has seen. Great car don’t get me wrong but with all the technological advances the newer versions of cars just aren’t the same.

I enjoyed your M3 analysis. My BMW M3 2018 Black is my daily driven car. I enjoy driving my M3 every day. I have >40K miles in 20 months. I live in the North East. It took me a few months to figure out how to drive the car since it had so much power/torque. The first 5K to 10K the car was too stiff. At 25 to 30K miles, it was more compliance with my driving style (after finding the proper setting for longer commutes). I strongly believe after attending M Performance DAY driving school in S.C, I gained experience on how to drive the M3 ( dry/wet/snow with/without traction control, as well as seating position, M adjustments). The experience from M Performance -Day driving school is well worth it. I enjoy driving long distances and M3 averages 26 to 28 miles/gallon (>65 highway). No performance modifications was done to the M3. No mechanical or electrical issues to date. FLAWLESS!!!!!
