It wasn't long ago that adventure bikes were only found at the premium end of the market. Things have changed today, and we now have three sub-5 Rs lakh compact ADVs in the BMW G 310 GS, Kawasaki Versys-X 300 and the Royal Enfield Himalayan. Team Autocar takes all three for a long ride to have some fun and find out which one we'd rather ride into the sunset.

Versys 300 owner here I swapped the front sprocket from a 14t to a 15 tooth, the gears are longer, the bike makes less perceivable torque, still, even in the steepest hills, i rarely use 1st gear, keep in mind, if you use smooth tyres, they won't grab the dirt very well, giving you less sensation of torque, still, if you twist the throttle hard, the rear wheel will spin because the bike does make enough power in low revs, using 1st gear even with the longer gears is something to be careful of, the bike sends a little too much power to the rear tyre, it can be fun unless you're in a very uncomfortable situation, like loose fine dust on a corner on an uphill, that's where you don't want your rear wheel to spin, i use 2nd gear at most if i want to control the torque on my bike, maybe i use 1st gear in less than 1% of the roads I've ever ridden. I'm not saying it's as strong as a CRF, but the commentary is misleading because it makes you believe it's a weak bike that needs to use 1st gear a lot.

I went through this process on my own and ended up with a '19 Himalayan Non-ABS. The Versys is as you described. The 310 felt like a BMW poser. Like buying a Mustang with a 4 cylinder engine. The Royal Enfield just felt right from the first 10 feet. I rode it first, and then rode it last and that made up my mind. Closing in on 1000 miles in 1 month and enjoying it more and more. If you desire to ride US interstates or many single track trails it is not the bike for that. If you stay within its limitations you will have a lot of fun with this bike.

I appreciate that you lot aren't just tarting up the Himalayan; As simplistic as this sounds, the bike is what it is. Not many frills, fairly simple, not hugely refined but for the price it is easily the most capable bike in this segment. At the end of the day, it's about getting you there and back in relative comfort, and as a new Himalayan owner myself I can say that the 1100km I've ridden since my purchase 12 days ago have all been comfortable and satisfying. Even the 2019 US spec model has it's quirks (nothing that isn't easily mended), but the bike is ultimately worth every bit of money I paid for it, and quite a bit more. The saddle is very accomodating, and at 186cm tall I flat foot the bike with my knees slightly bent. Calling the bike stable is a huge understatement. Due to the weight all being so low, it's also easy to right if you accidentally tip the bike on it's side on a trail, and with the extra torque vs. it's competition being delivered at low revs, the bike is ideal for carrying gear. I couldn't be happier with the purchase and am looking forward to getting it fully broken in so I can start throwing power modifications at it ;)

After owning a cl 350 for a long period of time i have recently exchanged it for RE HIMALAYAN ABS, and for the past 3 weeks i have been testing its potential, and to my suprise ,its doing great. And i dont kno why complaining about speed in tours, we dont need that. The best part is its simplicity and the second part is its super easy to wash. If you have done offroading you will understand what i m saying. All around performance, i d say go for himalayan.

A 650 is going to weight more requiring stronger frame, upgraded suspension, bigger/better brakes, etc. If they can keep the weight down low and manage the extra heat well it should be a big seller in the US. I am glad I got a '19 non-ABS version. It is the 3rd bike in my stable and low cost to buy and own. I don't try to pretend it is something it isn't and when used within its limitations it is a fantastic motorcycle.

And best bike in India to tackle any kind of trails.. And not to mention the affordability factor. Plus with a 4 years of extended warranty, every part that could go kaput is taken care by RE including the labour charges.. So don't you think its a well put out bike and a real offroader from RE.

Himalayan wins by far, essy to use every day, suficient for long rides, super awesome at off road and the best part "the price" The other two... Rest in peace. Himalayan rules... For ever. Saludos desde Cancún México.

Fantastic review! I totally agree there’s something about the rugged simplicity of the RE. Unfortunately here in Australia where they’re all imports, they all end up within a few hundred bucks of each other. I like the RE... I just don’t feel I can justify that kind of money for one. It’s like the Suzuki TU250x - love that the classic, in production for 30 years technology, but hate the designed yesterday with cutting edge tech price. Ultimately if I were going to buy an RE, I’d sooner pay the extra for the interceptor all day long... even if it’s not for off road lol. Ah tough choices... it seems here in Australia they all have quite a big drawback one place or another

I am 1.83 , i was in test drive with RE Himalayan and i have found the bike very uncomfortable, the brakes are ineffective. Apart the price, i don't see anything good at it. Sorry but that is my true opinion. Wonder how many of the people who wrote that Himalayan is an amazing bike have really drive it.

versys is in a class of its own for shorter indian riders. the build quality it better than the TVS BMW bike and literally has no vibrations. not to mention that its a proper screamer compared to the singles. I guess you get what you pay for, the exception being the TVS BMW in this case.

Himalayan is just a amazing bike to ride. But there is problem in its steering ball racer. I rode 9000 km on it & has changed ball racer 2 times. Otherwise milage is just awesome, top speed is not very fast but very good for indian road. Another thing is, may be it's only 24.5 hp bike, but it gets 32 nm torque in lower rpm that's quite amazing. It helps a lot in our high Himalayan terrain & good thing is RE provides conventional halogen lamp which is far better in any case. Overall it's a good package in low budget.

Dear Rishad, A question!!! I'm an owner of Classic 350 for the last 3years and I've done close to 30,000kms. But as I'm 6ft1', I'm feeling back and shoulder pain due to the ergonomics of the bike; May I upgrade to Himalayan in the perspective of comfort? Another question, how different is the fuel economy of Himalayan compared to Classic 350? Thank You Rishad.

You are not getting back ache because you are six feet plus. You are getting it because it is a bullet 350 or even 500 for that matter. I am 5 feet 6" tall and started riding the bullet electra 350 when I was 23 years old. I never had any back problems prior to the bullet. By the second month of riding the bullet I was inflicted with severe back pain. I still rode for a year and then sold it along with the the back ache to another person. It is not just the geometry of the bike it is a mix of different characteristics like suspension on the then bad roads , vibration from the engine that could have contributed to the back ache As for the Himalayan I have no first hand experience so I reserve my judgement on this. I am taking a test drive of the Himalayan next week.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Run by itchy boots was a perfect on field test of any bike. It stays beauty off its competitors. The pride of Indian is another attached height. The roar of it is impeccable. THE BEST choice for adventure.

Nice review team Autocar India.. I would like to add that Enfields are built to last long with an affordable service cost. Though it doesn't have the refined engines like other bikes & also comes with some electical failures(occasional) otherwise it's perfect. It has got a character of its own. yes a bike with which you can live your daily life behaving like a proper fàmily man & also become a spoiled brat at times to satisfy your soul 😜😜
