The BMW Group is taking major strides in revolutionizing its production processes through digitalization and automation under its BMW iFACTORY framework. A key part of this transformation is the Automated Driving In-Plant technology, which has been under development since 2022 at the company’s largest European manufacturing facility in Dingolfing. After successfully receiving CE certification, this innovative system is now moving into full-scale operation.
This cutting-edge technology is also being introduced at BMW’s Leipzig plant, with plans to expand its implementation to additional facilities across the production network. The Dingolfing plant has been using this system for models like the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series, while Leipzig is adapting it for vehicles such as the MINI Countryman and other BMW models. In Dingolfing, the vehicles drive completely autonomously over a route of more than one kilometer. This journey begins at the assembly halls and extends through a testing course before reaching the finishing area. The system relies on a sophisticated setup of sensors, creating Europe’s largest Light Detection and Ranging infrastructure. It also integrates cloud-based architecture for seamless coordination, regardless of the vehicle’s equipment features. The Swiss start-up Embotech AG played a crucial role in developing this technology, collaborating with BMW through its venture client program.
Leipzig aims to automate driving for 90 percent of its models, with facilities in Regensburg and Oxford expected to follow suit in 2025. BMW’s new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, will incorporate this technology from the beginning of its operations.
Looking ahead, BMW plans to expand the system for use in testing zones and outdoor areas. Engineers are refining the technology further, integrating more onboard features to complement external sensors. With these advancements, BMW is setting the stage for a more efficient and intelligent production future.
