This shows how incredible tesla is at efficiency. A Sr+ goes the same distance as the BMW while having 38% less capacity. That means poor BMW have to buy 38% more cells for their car which is already the most expensive part of the vehicle AND their cost of buying cells per kWh has got to be significantly higher than Tesla's in the first place because they just don't have the same volume. Crazy. I like this car but that range just doesn't cut it where I live. It's hard enough as is with my M3DM.

All Teslas had 18 wheel size and BMW i4 m50 had 19 size. So this makes a diference and impactes the bmw range in a negative way. Not fair comparison. I gess if the BMW had 18 wheels the range would be about the same as the equivalent model 3 preformence that had the 18 wheels in his test. The diference in range was only 50 km, what could be explained by the diference in wheel size.

BMW i4 M50 is an AWD with about 540hp, Tesla M3 SR+ is a RWD with less performance... The i4 edrive40 with RWD like the M3 SR+ has a longer range than the M50 for sure.
@lubder2 жыл бұрын
The SR+ is only rear wheel drive, is much lighter and has smaller tires, which makes a big difference. The difference to the Model 3P is already not that big, despite still having smaller tires. The bottom line is that the Model 3 is more efficient, no question about it, but nowhere near as big as you make it out to be. I'd rather BMW continue to build high-quality premium cars with a great chassis and comfort, which are heavier but have other advantages, than that they build a naked car trimmed for efficiency. There are other manufacturers for that. It's good that you have a choice.
@friedeseimiteuch53132 жыл бұрын
True but this costs 30k€ more (or 40k€ with options) so they probably still end up earning more money with this. And it's sold out well into 2023 which makes me think that outside of this EV comparison bubble people don't really care that it's a bit thirsty.

From Björn's table Model 3 Performance 18" wheels: 174 w/km I40 M50: 207 w/km -> Tesla consumption is 84% of BWMs. I am surprised that it is that small. Also M3 had 18" wheels. Copy from insideEVs: "His results show 293 Wh/mile with the 18s. With the 20s, he typically sees 350 to 380 Wh/mile. " So if Tesla would have bigger wheels, difference would be smaller ... 5% - 10%?? Anyway difference is almost insignificant for performance version. M3 LR is then clearly better... but clearly less performance also ... although still plenty enough ...

still... 400kg speaks loudly how much better Tesla's packaging abilities are, bc. high strength steel doesn't add too much weight compared to part-aluminum bodies (not 200kg at least), and soundproofing shouldn't account for more than 50-70kg over Tesla's, if at all. I think you can count 100kg for some "more" of equipment, and okay let's make it 50kg for better sound proofing and another 50 kg heavier body - leaves 200 kg unexcused extra weight ;)

Well, @Bjørn nyland … I’m actually underwhelmed by this car. I was really looking forward to your test of the i4, because I always liked BMW a lot, I’m still driving an ICE 330 d xDrive Touring after 5 BMW in a row…also had an i3 for 3 years. Choosing the right car is simple at the end: Buy the best car, the benchmark in its class. In the league of sporty compact (ICE-) sedans that’s been the 3 series for decades. Superb handling, compact fun-to-drive, creamy in-line-sixes…it checked all the boxes, it defined this category and for that „premium“ I was willing to pay that extra premium in price, no problem. But nowadays? Ok, it obviously still has a very well planted „Autobahn- approved“ road handling it’s well sound-insulated and the interior is well build, ok, that’s great. But what else?! Actually, when I took a look at the ICE-version of the i4 at my local BMW dealership, I found the interior to be nice but also not overwhelmingly better than that of a Hyundai IONIQ 5 with the Uniqe-Package for example or a Model 3, to be honest. To let it really stand out you have to buy „Individual-Leather“ etc. otherwise its just as plasticy as the other brands (for me that never was a problem, I bought a BMW for other reasons, it didn’t had to be an Aston Martin inside…). And when you tick that boxes, buy leather dashboard etc. than you get close to Taycan-price-territory… For me the i4 is just not premium anymore, thus I’m not willing to pay that premium either: Apart from the good suspension its mediocre: Its incredibly fat with 2400 kg and a car with Adipositas will never give you that darty ultimate-driving-machine feel, because its just not that. It even cannot beat a 60 kw- Standard- Model 3 on range, come on. So, ok, when you are not the best in efficiency, are you at least the best in charging? Hmmm…no: Compared to the 800V-league its second class technology. Sorry, BMW, at the end its just an overpriced, cramped, bad compromise. It’s not da defining it’s category anymore, sad. Just not worth all that money.

God damn, it is heavier than a diesel BMW X5. The downside of bolting batteries and motors to a normal car.

In Norway, with its very advanced charging infrastructure, is "Range Anxiety" really a thing? Comparing the Model 3 to an i4 is a lot like comparing an Accord to a 5-series; roughly the same size class, but nobody would ever expect the same efficiency out of the BMW. BMW pays huge attention to NVH and sound deadening and it shows, as well as a rich interior. If charging is a non-issue, either at home or rapid, does "consumption" really matter for a premium luxury sedan? Compared to the purchase price, the annual electricity cost "savings" are utterly irrelevant to the prospective buyer. (again, typical BMW drivers don't care if their 5-series gets mediocre fuel economy, it's simply not something they would even consider as an "issue"...)

Range anxiety isn't a thing IMO. Most cars will plan the route out ahead for you and most chargers have live status updates. So the car knows how many stalls are available. Even if not, ABRP will do that for you very reliably. Consumption is more of a engineering thing than a luxury thing. Yes the interior and sound deadening add weight but not 600kg extra compared to a Model 3. The car could've been more efficient if they had better hardware and software. Audi improved the efficiency of their cars, the Q4 E-Tron has the same range as the E-Tron even though it has a much smaller battery. It's not as much about consumption in itself, but high consumption leads to less range and more reliance on high power chargers. You add less range in an hour compared to a Tesla Model 3 Long Range if you only can get to a 50kW charger. It's BMWs 2nd generation of EVs and I expect the efficiency to improve. BMW's company cars are known to be quite efficient, a 320d will average around 6l/100km of diesel so why shouldn't the bog standard i4 (not the i4 M50) not try to be as efficient as possible?

It actually makes a lot of sense to compare Model 3 vs i4 since they are in the same size class and price class.

@@ndc5544p The car is inefficient here because of a mixture of too much weight, shitty tire setup and bad conditions. It's neither the hardware nor the software. The i4 has some of the most efficient electric motors on the market, actually more advanced than the stuff you get from Audi and Mercedes who just buy their drive units from suppliers. People need to realise that differences in efficiency of EVs are mainly down to physics and that's also why Tesla is so good at this. They are by far the lightest and the most aerodynamic. That's is the main reason they are winning the efficiency game and not some software or drive train magic. And anybody who thinks that needs to take some physics formulas and calculate EV consumption themselves.

The travel planner of the i4 is not as good as Tesla, not showing percentage at each stop/charger station for example. And by default charging stations are not even positioned on the planned route... even for a 1000kms trip. Should be fixed by software, sure, but in Tesla range anxiety is never an issue as route planning was designed for EV (and SuC) as a complete and consistent solution, whatever the battery size/consumption.
