BMW i5 Design Explained by BMW Designer

In today's video, we're taking a closer look at the new BMW i5 M60. We are joined by Domagoj Dukec, BMW Head of Design, who explains the new BMW i5 in detail.
This electric vehicle combines the elegance of the 5 Series sedan with sporty elements that give it an aggressive and genuine M car appearance.
From the moment you lay eyes on the i5 M60, you can't help but be captivated by its bold design. The blacked-out kidney grille panels, dual hood bulges, and M-style mirrors contribute to its road presence.
The lower front bumper boasts shockingly large air intakes, a feature not commonly seen on electric vehicles, further enhancing its sporty appeal. At the rear, you'll notice the sleek "diffuser" and subtle lip spoiler, adding a touch of aerodynamic sophistication. And let's not forget the 21-inch light alloy wheels that complete the look.

Ugly as hell. The previous model next to this one is a work of art. The body of the new one is too big, swollen. The rear of the car is strange, as if too high and too short. It doesn't resemble a well-drawn BMW at all, with slick lines and a sporty flair. BMW has become a random car from Asia that nobody cares about.

The side view looks actually good, rear bearable, but the front is awful. Looks squished and from other smaller Bmw. Update: actually after a few months I starting to like it. Looks a bit strange, but not awful anymore like the minimal design with a small number of body lines.

BMW should try to build cars that don't need "explanation" to perceive them as sporty, elegant or pretty. The truth is, the car looks more like a 1 series than a 5 series. the strong, straight sideline that made the 5 look very planted and strong in previous generations is gone and now we have downsloping front and backs, which both make the car look weak or broken. Front is overly complicated and the back is too bland, almost a 1:1 copy of a Jaguar XE, which is one of the most bland and boring cars Jaguar made. The black sideblades and underside on the back look horrible, almost as if there were no material left to finish the car. Missed potential in my oppinion.

BMW design used to be so distinctive with refinement and character, their designs didn't need explaining they spoke for themselves. He missed the point completely with the headlights. It's not the design itself and progression. It's the missing iconic piece. The kidney grille and hofmeister. He mentioned those two and left out the most noticeable feature in the past 2+ decades. Angel Eye DRLs. When you see a bmw on the road, that is the first things your eyes sees. You cannot mistake it for any other car. The halos!

You are using the words 'Elegant' and 'Beautiful' every second sentence trying to perhaps make ppl subconsciously associate those attributes with this horror of a 5 series but it won't work! This is just a brutal design. Anything but beautiful and elegant. And you have the gall to call it Italian design. This looks more like the uglified discontinued 5 series GT. You guys have just lost it. And don't be fooled into thinking these will be criticized now but beloved eventually as with the Bangle era cars. The Bangle era cars were initially hated by bmw fan boys but loved by the rest of common ppl including those for whom the Bangle era cars were the first BMWs they saw. The current designs are called ugly unanimously by all except perhaps a few outliers. Adrian Van hooydonk needs to be kicked out or retire since he just lost his sense of taste

English may not be his first language but he's using words he has zero idea what they mean: "..it gives this whole sleek and elegant car quite a strong front..." He's way too confident to be this bad at his job. EDITING for those in the comments who dont get it: this car design & esp. that front end is anything but "elegant" which implies being graceful & tasteful. What doesn't make sense to you about what he said? Seems perfectly logical to me. He's describing the contrast between the sleek body and the more sporty front as this car is a blend between the sportiness of the 3 and the luxury of the 7 after all. I find it slightly disturbing that you're using some misapprehension about his language use as an insult against his professionalism. There's a lot that goes into what makes a person good at their job than word use.

And than just to make it not big huge black hole / piece of plastic they added a "light". But the shape of it looks cheap. do u think it's elegant? me not. it's like u just stick something till get to autoservice.

I like the look of the car. However, I am surprised that the car is stretched another 4 inches yet there is hardly any change to interior space. It seems all of the additional length gets added to front overhang. Why do they need such a large hood?

Test drove the i4 after just test driving the iX. I just went around the parking lot as the comfort and safety didn't settle well with me. Too low to the ground, sitting position is awkward (I guess I am not used to sedans anymore). And yes, the long hood. I didn't like it soo much having to rubber neck at every turn. iX is far superior in visibility due to very short hood.

The designer should have explained why all recent BMW's got huge frontal overhangs such as this new 5 series. The car got longer by 10 cm and 8 of them went straight into the nose. 14:48 BMW has always stood for crisp, dynamic proportions from the sideview, why did they change that and give their sporty cars such long noses now ?

@@bmwblog Thx for replying. How come that doesn't apply to the new Mercedes models too than ? The overhang of the new E class actually got shorter than it's predecessor as well as the one of the S class to its previous model. The new 5 series is now 11 cm ! longer than a Mercedes E class while the wheelbase of the two remains almost the same in length. Also the 3 series still has a short overhang so I think there must be other reasons too why most BMW's noses got so much longer lately.

"New Skoda?" said my wife, when I showed her the new 5. Not much to add. A mediocre look, completely lost dignity of a top class, the front in particular! Headlights not worthy of the 20s of the 21st century; front overhang being long as if it were a middle class front-drive car, more than 6cm longer than at G30 and just the value the car overgrew 5m, for which in some countries people will have to pay higher motorway toll or ferry prices. I can’t imagine this design could survive until 2030! Staying calm and happy with my G30 LCI and looking forward to the new 6 class, hoping, Domagoj will be “doma” (at home), well before its launch.

I like the deep dive coming from a designer of the vehicle. It's cool to understand the company's motivations and intentions (I like the explanation of the 3 and 4 series). I think they did a great job, especially with more and more stipulations from the government. I'm sure the US version will have some less or more allowances (hoping for a functional panoramic roof versus the fixed). I love the look of the car and appreciate the modernity. I currently have an M550i and love the evolution of the cars. It still has character and looks great. 👌🏾 It's not for everyone and that's fine. I think they realize that. People should remember that the true look will shine once it's seen in person. Angles, video, lighting, and color all influence perspective. 23:22 "Design, or the perception of what is beautiful, is so subjective". One thing's for sure, they will sell, sell, sell!

My dad had 5 series back from the 70s and I've been driving BMW for more than 20 years. The words 'elegant' and 'good looking car' don't fit this car or your current range at all. You aren't listening BMW. Your recent cars range from 'Ugly' to 'OK' and the best you can say about this one is it's not as ugly as most of the cars you've come out with lately. I can't see myself buying another one the way they look at the moment so stop deluding yourself and start listening to your customers. I don't want to drive a Mercedes but just look at the EQS, then look at this and see if in all honesty you can call this car elegant.

Problem with a lack of outline in the front lights they get , not proportional rear. I understand rear going down because aerodynamic, but having it not raised looks ugly. Side rail is just wrong. Instead, being a signature feature, side rails confuse everyone. Previous 5 after lift looks better. Ugly.

What is up with the hoffmeister kink, it's like I get that its an iconic aspect of BMW, but the new ones are just slapped on like an afterthought rather than a part of the door and appear to be pieces of plastic with no function? The black sensor on the grill stands out like a sore thumb and looks like an after thought. The designers at BMW need revamped not the cars these days. The front looks like a mashed up 1 series, and the rear looks like a Toyota. Seriously BMW sort your design team out.

I can live with front but the back and side skirts is disaster, like some mentioned previous 5 series was masterpiece compared to this new one.
