BMW i8 Roadster | Ready to fight Tesla Roadster?

Like the BMW i8 Coupe, the 2018-2020 BMW i8 Roadster is based on the LifeDrive vehicle architecture with aluminium chassis and carbon - fibre - reinforced plastic (CFRP ) passenger cell. The further optimized BMW eDrive technology employed in both models comprises a high - voltage battery with significantly expanded cell capacity and energy content, and an electric motor generating a higher peak output. The result is a noticeable increase in dynamic performance , operating range and the amount of driving possible using purely the electric drive system.
The internal combustion engine has also undergone further optimisation to ready it for the new BMW i8 Coupe and new BMW i8 Roadster. The three-cylinder unit extracts maximum output of 231 horsepower (170 kW) from its displacement of just 1.5 litres, along with peak torque of 320 Nm (236 lb-ft). In the process, it generates an even sportier sound track. A particulate filter is now fitted to further reduce emissions by absorbing the particulate matter contained in the exhaust gases.
The system output produced by the electric motor and engine acting in unison is now 374 horsepower (275 kW). The new BMW i8 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62mph) in 4.4 seconds, while the new BMW i8 Roadster takes a tick longer with a time of 4.6 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Agreed. I think BMW really should just make a 100% electric powertrain for this. The design of it still looks pretty amazing so many years later, but the performance specs really aren't up to what we would expect at this stage, much less compete with Tesla's Ludicrous Model S/X, and it's far from the new Roadster.

Well the question is if and when Tesla will acutally build the Roadster. You can only compare cars that actually do exist. By the time the Roadster will be launched, BMW will also launch another vehicle (so are Porsche and many others). So let's make the comparison then in the real world!

With the Model 3 capable of doing 0-60 in under 5 seconds BMW seems likely to be going out of business if they keep this up. This thing can't beat the Model X P100D at all and is being compared to the Tesla Roaster, why when the Model X is an cross over SUV? Model X P100D 0-60 in 2.9 seconds what happens when they upgrade the Model X to a P200D? I guess we are seeing the beginning of the end of the old car manufactures as simply put they can't keep up with the times as people are tired of being enslaved by big oil.

david wow Did I say that? It was an overall statement. the roadstar is a better car. Functionality, Driving range(630 miles), features, etc. And yeah....0-60 sprints in under 2 seconds, 1/4 mile in about 8 seconds. He'll, the Tesla semi isn't much slower than the I8.

Explain a reason. 10. how many people who're always moaning about the i8's sound generator would buy one as option if they have to buy a 218d Grand Tourer for the family instead of the M5 they've dreamt of?
