In part 2 of the 1988 #BMW #K100 #caferacer build I am restoring the fuel tank. The tank had been repainted by the previous owner and although it was in pretty good condition it did have some chipping around the bottom edge and I also do not really want that color red so I decided to strip it all the way back to bare aluminum and start over. I decided to go with a factory BMW color Snapper Rocks Blue and I am very happy with how it turned out. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
For custom BMW tank caps like the one I used in this video contact Trevor (@ditstang) on instagram or ditstang@hotmail.com to order one for your own K100/K75 (Supplies are limited so when they sell out they are gone!)

Damn, you beat me to the punch. The build I'm working on now is going to be an "asmr" video but I'm hesitant to put that in the title. IDK. Excited to see your build finished. The attention to detail on this tank is incredible, something I need to work on myself.

Thanks man! I didn't film this with the intention of it being asmr but as I was editing I thought maybe the asmr crowd might enjoy it! I'm glad to have majority of the paint work done so the bike should come together pretty quick in the next month or two.

It was such a pain but watching it back through video was satisfying haha. It took me 3 days to get that tank completely stripped.

Try wrapping it in plastic after you apply paint stripper, it keeps the stripper liquid for longer and rips straight through all the paint. Best little tip someone told me years ago, works so well.

That kind of adhesive pad is always very messy to remove. How did you decide which Tabs to cut off? I really love the Blue, a superb finish.

Nice work men! What is the green pad around 10:19 to polish it up? I love the bare metal colour. Greets from the Netherlands
@BayCityRestorations
@BayCityRestorations 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is just a scuff pad/scotch brite pad. It is good for cleaning the surface but not causing deep scratching in metals like aluminum.

Great video! How do you plan to secure the tank to the frame without the mounting brackets?
@BayCityRestorations
@BayCityRestorations 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! There are two pins on the underside of the tank that secure it to the frame as well as sliders on the front. The brackets I cut off were mounts for side panels that come on the K100 that I will no longer be using.
@Patrickodono
@Patrickodono 3 жыл бұрын
I understand. Just a heads up, be careful with that method, I have read that those pins can potentially cause the tank to puncture in the event of a collision. Something to look into, better safe than sorry. Best of luck with the build.

What are you using at 10:13 when you’re smoothing the tank out? I’m worried I’m doing it too hard because I’m getting shavings of metal when doing it
@BayCityRestorations
@BayCityRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
it is a scotch pad that I am using. You could probably get away with 400 grit or high sand paper to smooth everything out.

Lovely color and finish. However 99 pct of all k rebuilds "fail" to remove the flange on the tank. Maybe a conscious choice, but it can be done and it looks 100 pct better...
@BayCityRestorations
@BayCityRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
I think people are scared to cut it because it’s so close to the welded seam of the tank. To me if you remove the side panels it is a must to remove it for aesthetics.

Why wouldn't it be possible to scrape off all the paint with a metal brush on a drill right away?
@BayCityRestorations
@BayCityRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
I guess you could but this is an aluminum tank. You would risk deeply scratching metal if you went too aggressive with metal brush.
