Thank you Kirk for all your videos! You have given me the confidence to work on my 05 LT. These fuel disconnects are one of the 5 repairs I've learned from watching your videos. I have the Maintenance CD Rom repair disk, however your step by step visual aids and your sense of humor make it fun and easier to tackle the problems. It's great to be an LT owner and even better to have custom videos showing the ins and outs of the bike. Thanks!

HAD GAS leak, not happy, google you kirk.. and there you had this video -THANKS A TON dude ! .. called for parts -they were $49male + $29 female + tax + s/h = over $110 ! .. it was Sat late -- so now I do not want to wait a week to repair - so I called my local auto-parts store - got 2 brass fuel line connector fittings for $5.99 .. and removed the old BROKEN BMW junk quick-release - inserted my cheap fittings in 5 min's .. tighened my .75cent new clamps .. and it works GREAT ... economical/fast and good repair BY ME .. and if I ever need to remove my tank (when would I need to ?) - I will simply clamp-off the hose - no gas will leak out - I DO NOT NEED THE 2 $110 quick-release thingy's ... but YOUR VIDEO WAS GREAT to see - and I love most-all your other video's ... KEEP MAKING MORE - and make them MORE DETAILED - more complex - more camera angles -- you are a online BMW vid star .... wish you were my neighbor ! ;)

Hi - didn't know about this problem until I was 200 miles away from home. Started smelling gas but thought it was just fumes from the vents in the tank. I had just filled up. When I stopped I looked down to see a puddle of gas on the ground and realized my foot was soaked. So - this is a real problem. 2002 LT with 28K miles. Thanks for the video. Huge help.

These fittings AND your brake lines. I remember watching one of your videos when I first got my new used bike. You said...replace those brake lines, and replace the plastic disconnects before they fail. Well, chagrine, my front brake line popped on a road trip. I replaced them with Spieglers, now to replace these pesky things before they too give up the ghost. THANKS!!!

Great video! However getting the hose off the plastic fitting was a pain in the ass. after taking with mechanic I used a hair dryer (he suggested a heat gun) to warm the hose to get them apart. given it's a gas line not to smart but it did work. slipped right off.

I always like your videos. The tips and tricks really help save time and money. With this one its 100% safety first as it could save your life. If for some reason this brakes you and your bike could become engulfed in flames. Thank you. I dont have this on my bike but will be happy to pass it on where I can..

Good video, but if you have a R9T series best check out Pier City Custom , "Tank removal" vid, shows a tank brace holds front of tank up high enough to do the replacement of fittings. I made my own brace but PCC will sell them for @$10 + shipping.

Can I use a one way connector instead of a quick disconnect? If so, do both hoses have the same flow direction? Do both flow from the tank to the cylinders, or is one a return hose?

Great video - I have a 2000 LT that I rarely use now because I have a Gsa, but today I noticed that when I started it up it did leak gas. Hard to tell what side the leak was coming from but do you think this could be the issue? How difficult is it to remove all the protective bodywork to gain access?
@kirksmotorrad
@kirksmotorrad Жыл бұрын
It just takes time to get to it. Remove the top right panel first and have a look at the connections. If they are plastic they need to be replaced. If the leak is on the left, you NEED to check it out or it could cause a fire!

You dont have to go to the dealer but it is the easiest way to find them. I think McMaster-Carr carries them too. I dont have the part # handy.

hey man, I just took my tank off and it went fine but then i looked out my window and there was gas leaking from one of the black hoses that stick out the bottom.... did I do something wrong? how do I put the tank back on without gas pouring out of this hose? any help is appreciated lol!
@kirksmotorrad
@kirksmotorrad Жыл бұрын
It will push gas out if the tank is full and left in the sun. Open the cap and see if it is pressure related.
@conordawson2649
@conordawson2649 Жыл бұрын
@@kirksmotorrad it was because it was slightly on its side, so the gas was technically in the “ overflow” mode, hence why it was coming out of the lines.

Don't you want to disconnect the battery first when messing with fuel? Also, I think Beemer Boneyard sells them at a reasonable price.
@kirksmotorrad
@kirksmotorrad 10 жыл бұрын
um.... hmm.... I suppose if the battery is randomly showering sparks all over you then yes, by all means disconnect it. Otherwise you can leave it connected. Do you disconnect the battery when you fill up?
@BMWLDRider
@BMWLDRider 10 жыл бұрын
You really gonna hang your hat on that analogy?
@kirksmotorrad
@kirksmotorrad 10 жыл бұрын
BMWLDRider I suppose my response is a bit on the strong side. Here is how I feel about it. You are responsible for your own safety. If disconnecting the battery makes you feel safer, then by all means do it. I personally do not feel it is necessary to disconnect the battery when the chance of a spark is zero or less. So no I do not feel the need. The only thing I would not recommend is smoking while doing this operation. So in answer to your question. Yes. But now you have me wondering, what do you feel is the likely part that will shoot sparks out when you are doing this job? The electrical system is not involved here.
@BMWLDRider
@BMWLDRider 10 жыл бұрын
illinoisBMWriders Very beginning two connectors already disconnected to your right. At the 2:20 mark you actually move an electrical connector out of the way. Looks like there are actually two. The hose clamp you use lays right across that/those connectors. Yours looks like plastic so not an issue. But not everyone has plastic hose clamps. The diagonal pliers, tile nippers (good idea, btw) screwdrivers, spreader pliers et al, you use are metal and can certainly short a hot lead to ground. The novice shade tree mechanic has no idea if those connector/leads are hot or not. Not a big deal to disconnect the negative lead to take the battery out of the circuit. So think safety first. Almost every manual I read when working with fuel states: “disconnect the battery… disconnect the battery… disconnect the battery”. I think there’s a reason for that. Overkill? Maybe so. But you know as well as I do that “shit happens”. I enjoy all your videos especially those that cross over to my K12RS and I subscribe to your channel. I think overall you do a great job. Look me up at the MOA Rally and we’ll have a beer.

Why bother with expensive quick disconnects? Just install longer fuel lines and you can lift the tank without disconnecting lines.

Why couldn't a guy just by a couple of metal fittings and slide the hoses over that and clap it....instead of putting in those expensive quick disconnects ?????

You can. It just becomes a real pain in the um... gas to remove the tank! I did that on mine for years and hated it. Now I put QD's on and it goes much faster!

@@kirksmotorrad I'm sure you would know more than I, since I'm a rookie on the LT. My thinking is. I noticed you still had to remove a clamp and pull the connector out of the fuel line, which I don't think was that big a deal. Granted, after installing the quick disconnects. You only do that once. But, since I don't really have the extra money to buy those... I'm going to copy your old method and give it a try. I can always change it out later, as you did. I guess at this point I can't view it as being that big of a frustration. I will remember your point however...thx for now! Although I don't live in Illinois, I snowbird between Az and Mn....I'd like to be a member of your club. How can I do that? I sent you a Email about my knocking sound....I can't wait to hear your response about that. You may not like to get involved in phone calls, since you're a national hero. But here's mine in case you don't mind. 763-250-4744. Guess being an old coot, I fill as though more can be accomplished by talking rather than writing. Thanks so much for your experienced output

Just wonder why you didn't replace the complete kit... You just replaced the male side (by metal one) to shove them in a (old)plastic female side! For shure, soon you will have to dismantle the whole fairing again to replace the female side ...! That's what I whould wonder if I was your customer...
