BMW M140i vs M4 Competition (Bedford Autodrome GT Circuit)

Aside from the power/handling differences, PS4 v Cup2 was never going to go in my favour. They didn't stop Jeff unsticking his rear-end at every opportunity though!

None at all, I'm not really braking any differently than I would if I used my right foot. I'm not braking at the same time as I'm on the throttle, there's just a minor overlap here and there to make for a smoother transition.

Hi Mark! Nice driving. I believe you sold the M140i now, but did you ever get rid of the rev hang (f.e. when upshifting at 1.56 and 2.03) on upshifts? Besides the lack of feel of the M140i, one of my main issues with the car.

Great track action and driving, sad to say the m140i is match for a full on m car, but in the same token the M140 is no slouch. Must say on track manual cars look so clumsy and hard work compared to the latest Auto/ twin clutch set up's, Over a lap i would imagine there a fair chuck quicker too, and i know before everyone shoots me down by say manuals are more engaging etc.I know and i'm referring to out right lap speed and consistency. Enjoyed your video as usual 👌👍

I completely agree. Give me a an otherwise identical ZF8 car and I would be quicker without any doubt at all. Clumsy? Yep! But I like that process, I like having to manage the revs, I like heel and toeing, I like the sense of smugness that comes when I occassionally nail it just so!

@@MarkCup70 Agree 100%, the auto blip/rev match on downshifts makes life a whole lot easier in my manual M4CP while retaining a real sence of driver involvement. Just love it.

I guess that video shows the difference between M performance and full M. Is that M4 stock and is it a manual or DCT ?

M4 was manual and had stronger pads, same fluid as me (ATE Typ200), and was on Cup2 tyres. Otherwise 100% as it left the factory.

When you think about the price point on each car the M140i is epic value for money and thrills per mile for almost half the price of a new fully specced up M4.

Why do you left foot brake? Any time you would gain from left foot braking is lost because you don’t get straight back on the throttle. Also why are you slipping the clutch on up shifts? I’m not trolling, just interested.

LFB is mostly force of habit, besides, if I'm not using my left foot on the clutch for a downshift on the way in, why not? Apart from some minor overlap I'm not using the brake and throttle at the same time...but, when I get it right, it allows me to bring the throttle in simultaneously as I'm coming off the brakes. It makes that transition from braking to accelerating smoother, keeps the car more settled as you get just one body movement/transition. As for clutch slipping, I'm 100% not. Watch the upshift just after 2:00 on the video...for some reason when I wring it out close to the redline, when I disengage the clutch and come off the throttle, the revs drop and then momentarily climb again. You can see it, my foot isn't touching the throttle pedal and the revs climb on their own after dropping slightly. Why it does that I have no idea!

@@Tom-pb6vs It's not slipping Tom, it just kind of blips the throttle itself when I press the clutch and come off the throttle, so it's a throttle/ECU issue, not clutch disengagement. Can you say a time in the video where you think it's/I'm slipping the clutch?

It’s definitely a weird one. If you look at 1:57 then you can see that you’re back on the throttle whilst the clutch is still at about 50% although I accept that the clutch may already be engaged at that point. The second shift at about 2:01 highlights what you’re saying perfectly so yes I agree that it’s not something you’re doing. Seems odd that it does that as it sounds like the ecu increases the revs then lets the clutch engagement slow it down. You’ll know more than me, can you feel it do anything when that happens?

To me all that unnecessary fancy footwork is slowing you down. You are concentrating on changing gear, braking and blipping the throttle as you go into the corner but then getting the corner all wrong. 🤔 @ 5.30 you are riding your clutch far too long while braking, changing gear and concentrating on blipping the throttle while watching you pal drift around the corner. You look to be far busier with the controls than you need to be for a good entry and a faster exit. Smoother is faster. 😉
