BMW makes some questionable engineering decisions at times.. but putting the oil filter up top, and making access to the drain plug so easy, not even requiring removal of a bunch of under-body panels, is brilliant.

A common mistake is to remove the bottom drain plug with the top oil cap off and the filter housing open. This will cause the oil to drain very quickly. If you drain the oil first before you remove the fill cap and oil filer , the oil will drain much slower. Then when the oil is almost completely drained , open the fill cap and oil filer housing.

Most likely in BMW no one will notice the oil you have put in, however it is always good to put the oil prescribed by the parent company, in your case the recommended oil is 0-W30 which being slightly more fluid will flow better in the small holes that require lubrication.
