After discovering that my radiator fan was broken on the M3, I ordered a new one from getBMWparts. I also replace the cowl filter covers while doing the fan.
While doing the replacement I also talk about why I don't buy into getting extended warranties for my cars.

Dang! Just had this exact same thing happen. Was feeling those weird vibrations especially when the A/C kicked in. Took a look and sure enough, fan broke at the same spot that yours did. Just ordered the fan; now just waiting for it to show up and replace it. Thanks for this video Matt!

So, this is a great topic. I bought my M3 last year with 28k miles. I honestly wasn’t going to get the warranty. But, I had friends scare me into it with their horror stories of Rod Bearings ie;) engines grenading. Yes, it’s an extra $40 a month for me but, I look at it like. If I can’t afford $40 more a month, I’ve got way bigger issues to worry about. And, although I only weekend drive it. It gives me peace of mind in case the unfortunate happens.

I'd say living life thinking in term of monthly payments is a bad idea. Rod Bearing failure is the car guy's way of pretending like they know what they are talking about. I've never met or seen anyone that has had them fail.

Warranties are a rip off. The probability of utilizing the full cost is slim (reason they offer them for that exact duration). You’re better off taking the cost of the warranty and stashing it in a high yield savings account to accrue some interest for yourself. Deposit $100 or so in the account each month and have it in case an issue arises. If you never have an issue, you’ve saved yourself thousands and earned money along the way.

My E90 M3 warranty was $4700 and it paid out well over $14k in repairs. That said, my shop knew I had it, I trust them fully and they replaced EVERYTHING that looked "off". For me, it was the possible of rod bearing issues, evaporator, etc. The Evap repair was $3200 alone. I just got an RS7 and am undecided on whether or not I want one. Seems theyre dumb reliable. Great info though

Thing is with german or japanese cars, if you get them new or almost new, rarely something breaks or fails within the 5 or 7 years (latest japanese cars) of warranty you get, after that period mostly small thing. like a radiator fan, but better just replace it then all the hassle with the warranty

I agree with you 100% Matt. If you cant afford to maintain the car then you shouldn't buy it in the 1st place. You should always have "rainy day money" for your cars and your house. People today seem to think they can buy whatever they want and it will all be fine forever. People should save up a bit longer to bank more money to make sure they can take care of an issue if they don't have the funds already..

One thing about the plastic of the fan is that even if the car has low mileage, the plastic parts still become brittle over time. The fan was likely already brittle and pulling on it damaged it even though it wouldn't have broken just from normal use yet.

You know I mostly always agree with you, I do not agree with you on this. 90% of the population has no clue how to fix a car, or even change the oil. Also, to go with that, 6 out of 10 americans don't have $500 in their bank account. This is where a warranty for a car comes in. They pay $30-$50 a month to have that peace of mind that they can make it to work everyday rather than fronting out $800+ for a repair and being late for work because something is broke. But yes 10% of us know how to fix things and do maintenance and warranties just aren't needed. Awesome car brother, look forward to a wash and chat.

Coming from a current BMW tech Throttle Actuators do good bad and so do the Rod Bearings. Both repairs will have to be made or should be made at some point. I did mines this past Saturday on my E90 M3 and they were destroyed. OG you have extremely low mileage so as far as throttle actuators your good for a little while but Rod bearing failure can happen at any time. One more thing you definitely broke that fan 😂. Those fans don't break on there own like that especially at that mileage.

These high performance BMWs have got to a point where they are attainable by some 18-24 year olds with ok credit, not much mechanical sympathy and a poor maintenance budget really, so they go over a few k between services and start caning it when it's cold, not doing diff/oil services when required.. I think this has added to the stigma of BMWs are unreliable and lets be honest, the best M cars are getting older now and are likely to have higher mileage on them, so more chance of things going kaput just due to the way the "new age" owners have been treating them over the past 5 years say.

I think the biggest problem of this discussion is, that some BMW owners think they know everything about BMWs. If something breaks on their BMW, it is eventually going to break on every BMW, FOR SURE BRO! They have to learn to put their egos aside and remind themselves that it‘s not enough to own a certain car to know everything about it.
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage 5 жыл бұрын
That's not a bad observation. I find it funny when people change their rod bearings because everyone that know very little about the subject told them to do so. Then they take them out and they show wear. If you disassemble an engine with 75,000 miles on it, every single part in there will likely show wear. Urban legends grow large, fast.

Depending on the car, the warranty can definitely be worth it. In my case, with my 2011.5 E92 M3, it was definitely worth it. Paid for more than half itself in the first repair, a leaky mechatronics DCT pan. Had a few other repairs, then sold the car 1.5 years into a 3 yr extended and canceled after I sold the car. Got the prorated amount back which was almost 2k on a $3600 plan. I bought one for my F80 and am starting to think I probably wont get my moneys worth from this one but it was well priced since the F80 was a 18 and low mileage and it's like to have the peace of mind for 5 years.

I haven't heard of a e9x DCT owner who hasnt had a sleeve leak. Between that, actuators, and bearings, a warranty will probably pay for itself. I rolled the dice on my 6MT and have only done regular maintenance and bearings(44k to 79k).
