So you just saved me a ton of money! Bought a rebuild kit on Amazon for $18 delivered. Best $18 I ever spent. The car drives like new and when I ran the diagnostics the error codes went from 8 to 3. Still have work to do on the car but wow did this help. Thanks!

Been having a rough off poppy, cold start for more than 3 years in an M52, My guess is this DISA, since every where else in that Motor has been checked to be perfect except the part. Got tired of getting a Mech make a follow up on the problem. It's high time i went back to him with a solution. That clip is enlightening.

Instead of buying a rebuild kit, I drilled thru both ends of the flap (thru the pins), and stuck a cotter pin thru. Worked like a charm. Been that way for the last 10,000 miles and hasn't rattled like it did before the fix. Now I don't have to worry about my engine eating the metal pin like my friend's car did :)

Very helpful and informative short video. I happened to have a leak in the coolant pipes that go under the intake manifold, so I took the manifold out to do the job. To my surprise , I noticed that after I put everything back the idle rpm was off and had some fluctuation . Also , the car was shaking a bit at above average speed. So I started looking into the causes and stumbled on this video. I ordered the DISA repair kit, and will also take the Intake air control valve (ICV valve?) out to clean it and hopefully this will resolve the issue. What else can you recommend to resolve this issue? I appreciate your help and advice. Thanks!

Just did this today on a M54 in my 2005 X3 3.0 with a different kit. It was better design but mine was poorly made and required considerable sanding, filing etc to work smooth, but I finally got it right. The unit in there was fine, but I did it anyway... but it's not so easy on an X3. As far as I can tell it's impossible to remove the valve itself from the engine without removing a large plastic panel opposite the valve. That would be fine except that you have to disassemble half the freaking car to remove the panel. So, since this is a $5000 car, I elected to cut an access hole in tje plastic panel to allow me to remove the valve... problem solved, but not before I removed a bunch of stuff trying to remove the panel correctly, and of course each thing fought me. One thing I did different than the above video is I chose to drill out the old plastic actuator that fits into the bottom of the valve plate, gradually increasing the size of the bit until the plastic collapsed and I could pull the actuator out. After inspecting the old valve plate it looks like there's a slot in the shaft to allow you to release the actuator pin, so check yours cause they can be difficult to remove. The rebuilding itself is simple, and only the fact that my kit was a POS made it difficult. Gonna leave bad feedback on that one...

Hey Nathan, I used the rebuild kit on my 04 X5 , before I did it I had an issue starting my car almost every time, I'd have to give it gas so it would turn on, but now that I repaired the flap she cracks right away, now did you you're X5 have that same symptom? And also do you think that might be a reason why rpms would drop and the "trans failsafe mode" message would pop up?

7:07 That blue piece goes into the a metal copper bushing of the valve. If that bushing is worn or cracked, it will be vacuum leak. It is too bad that bushing is not replaceable. To some extend if your flap is broken, chances are the bushing is not in good condition and u will have a vacuum leak that is head to detect unless u do a smoke test. I would check the bushing before buying the kit. If less than perfect, get a new valve instead. Nathan, am I right?

I have an 01 E39-M54. I just completed a CCV and inlet tube replacement (I pulled the intake manifold) based on another of your videos. They were great! IMy DISA flap was floppy, so I installed a used one that had good tension. When I started the car after all that, it idled poorly, heard a loud vacuum leak, but it made a terrible racket and a loud, scary, banging sound.I thought I installed the manifold carefully and blew out the combust. chamber of all debris. I checked all obvious places for leaks, but I didnt RTV or put a new O ring on the DISA which I will try, but the noise was bad. Could this be the DISA valve flapping around?!!!. Thanks Very Much.

I rebuilt my DISA with an X8R kit and it functions correctly.........vacuum holding correctly etc. However after a smoke test to check for vacuum leaks smoke appeared from the DISA. It is coming from where the actuator arm enters the DISA, which I assume means the diaphragm inside the DISA unit might be failing. Has anyone else come across this or agrees with my diagnosis theory?

i used this same blue repair kit about half a year ago. Some days ago my engine begun to run very lean. upon further inspection i found both the inntake boots had a hole in them. I removed the disa valve to get the lower boot off. Then the disa flap was gone :( lucky the pin was still in and had not been sucked into the engine. I have now taken off the intake manifold to find 2 melted pieces of the flap inside valves on cylinder 3 and the half other flap was stuck in the intake manifold canal 3.. I have no idea how the disa valve has managed to break in two but I will not be using this repair kit again. i will go the expensive way i guess and buy the X8R aluminium kit.

Just received my DISA valve repair kit from vanos-BMW.com (Russia). Kits from there. They do include the vacuum membrane (if needed) as part of the kit. Like GAS disa kits, the actuation arm and flap are aluminum and a titaniym through pin. The kit also includes a vacuum membrane just incase the system will not hold vacuum. He also sells the membrane by itself. The price is somewhat of a premium ($86 with shipping, give or take). GAS I've found doesn't make a kit the M52tu. vanos-BMW.com does. My part DID take approximately 3+ weeks to get here. I would hope and expect to to make a better fix as it doesn't use a pin (push pin) that is notorious to falling out into the intake. I'll try to remember to keep you informed how my repair turns out.

im getting all the codes for a disa issue. I pulled mine off and everything on it is tight, works fine.... but the vacuum wont last longer than 2 seconds.... My car starts up like crap, knocking and banging, but once it warms up after 15 seconds its fine. Also if I unplug the MAF it starts up with out an issue at all (not driving it like that, just idling).... Could the Disa still be the problem? Bad diaphragm? Or should I investigate other issues before spending 150 on a new one? Thanks.

Doug Dileo Yes my friend, if the O ring is messed up it creates a vacuum leak. I had the code P0174 and what I did to find the leak was a pain in the ass but it worth it and I saved a lot of money. I removed the intake manifold, then I put a glove in the boot where the manifold should be connected and tape the edge. In one of the fingers I open a tiny hole and connected a hose and tape it. Then I smoked a cigarette and blow the smoke through the hose I connected. Eventually the smoke started coming out of the Disa Valve, which clearly shows that there’s the vacuum leak. If smoke does not come out of the Disa Valve but it comes out of the boot or somewhere else then there’s your vacuum leak! There are a lot of videos in youtube of how to find a vacuum leak smoking a cigarette, check them out. Good luck :)

no, literally a 2" long lag bolt that is 10mm. After looking at it, think it is supposed to be used to remove stubborn flapper stem from the inside? Screw it in and yank it out? Which is about where I am with mine, it doesn't simply pop out with a pair of plyers. Totally frustrated.

Even cheaper (but not the most optimal) way to fix the DISA valve: take out the flap and leave it as is if you want top-end power (at the expense of low-end torque at RPMs < 3750) or tape up the area where the flap was if you want low-end torque (at the expense of top-end power at RPMs > 3750). Personally, I'd tape it up on a street car and leave it open on a track car.
