Its great that you keep those wonderful cars on the road. Few people realise that 98% of all the resources a car uses in its lifetime are consumed during its Manufacture. By keeping them on the road your doing more for the environment than buying a new car.

That's a bad day. Cracked block on the back maybe between the trans and the block? They don't make anything bigger. Time for a new block.

They are sending me a m16 x 1.50 outer diameter sert that the smaller sert will screw into, we will see if it works

I would go extra small on the drill bit! Err on the side of smaller I mean

7:20 Inline sixes usually run hot on the #6 cylinder. On a v6 the coolant has a shorter path to the rear of the cylinder head back to the radiator. Because of the physics of aluminum the long inline six head will stretch when it overheats and it'll get hotter on #6. Motors also get some cooling effect from air flow and #6 gets less airflow. The Cummins diesel also runs hotter on the #6 cylinder, but its a cast iron block that doesn't expand as much as an alloy block. A siamese block like the BMW can't allow coolant to short circuit between the cylinders. Mercedes adopted V6 motors when BMW adopted alloy blocks, the cooling issue was probably a reason that Mercedes made that choice. On the Cummins six an aftermarket fix is to open a core plug on the back of the block and pass the return line from the heater bypass into a special plug. This relieves some of the heat from the rear of the block. I don't know if that is possible on the M54. I've seen a plug back there but I don't know if it accesses the water passage of the head. I like the Mopar slant six, which also runs hot on #6 which can burn the exhaust valves. In the 1930s thru '50s the Mopar flatheads used a water distribution tube that directed a jet of water to hot spots in the rear of the block that was quite effective in those days. The short of this is almost all inline sixes run hot on #6, alloy motors stretch when they get hot and the steel head bolts don't, so the threads get pulled out on #6. Check the coolant level of your BMW at least once a week and get it fixed immediately if you have to add coolant. This is a good plan on *any* motor with some miles or age, but especially an alloy inline six.

Hey I'm doing the exact same job but on an X5 I'm using all the same tools your using in this video, but I'm stuck on where to find time sert inserts that have an M10x1.50 center & a outside thread pitch of 14mx1.50 thread pitch. I glanced at the link you posted for the serts, but it says it for a m10 sized hole. any help is appreciated

Hey what about steering rack. For e46 330xi can I replace the seals. Is leaking from driver side. What you recommend and where I can find parts.

Got a question, Im currently doing Time serts on my n51 2011 328i, the outer 4 headbolts are smaller than the other 10 inner M10 x 1.5 bolts, so when everyone does these jobs where do you get the additional 4 M10 bolts to replace the outer smaller bolts? Do you just order 2 headbolt sets? Or does anyone sell them as singles

Bummer Nathan. I would like to see you using a drill bushing to keep the drill and tap square with the block. One can easily be made with a piece of square tubing drilling it to size on a drill press to keep it square. Then lay it flat on the block and drill through your predrilled hole and your new holes in the block will be square. Do the same with the tap once you get three or four threads started the tap angle is set and you can remove your guide and continue tapping. Remove your tap from the bad hole in the block and clean it out good and inspect with very bright flashlight there may be cavity or air pocket or trash in the block casting, or make sure you haven't drilled into a water jacket. I have seen this on outboard motor castings and its not good. Can you go deeper with the hole to get into good metal and run a longer head bolt? Things to consider. It seems that problems like this are always at the hardest place to get at. Good luck with what ever you have to do.

How do did you remove the old timeserts ? I've recently installed timeserts on my M54B30 engine after an overheat situation. Was running great after I rebuilt the engine. 6 months later the cooling system started to over pressurize, engine still ran great though and compression in all 6 was good. Decided to take the cam cover off to check the head bolts and one bolt was loose and will not torque down, I can't even remove the bolt either, just spins and spins. I'm thinking now that the timersert has failed and exhaust gas is escaping from that under torqued bolt. Don't fancy doing another timesert job, it's too expensive and time consuming to risk it happening again. May go for ARP studs this time.

Those aluminum blocks usually crack or warp if it overheats too much or too long, I watched this done by a season beemer guy, I would have liked to see the drilling process on this vid but I know it would be too long for a vid

Hi! I retapped my M54 block to biggest possible size - M16x2.0. Now I want to install M16x2.0/M12x1.5 timesert with metal glue. I will use ford barra ARP 252-4302 M12 x 1.5 heads studs

Went to your Amazon store and can't find these. Looking everywhere. Do you have part #? I just did all 14 with time serts and #5 and 7 on intake spun when torquing the head. I think this is it but if you can confirm, that would save me $70 in wrong parts. BIG-SERT Metric Steel Insert M10 X 1.5 X 24.5MM Part # 50155 Thanks and keep up the good videos.

Hi. Thank you for your videos. I have question if anyone can answer it please. So can you do the middle threads (like the 2 or 4) that are stripped and leave the outer threads with original threads. Mine only 2 middle ones are stripped. PLEASE HELP. thank you

Yes, but would be good idea to torque all of the bolts to make sure any others dont strip. For the little extra cost and time would be safer to do all of them as the engine is more likely to be stronger in the long run. I had only 2 stripped in my block and did all of them but ended up with one of them stripping again and I know why. I should of used the bigger timeserts in the first place like he shown in this video, but without the impact driver for my tapping of course!

This was 2 sizes uo, when these overheat it breaks down the engine block and makes it brittle

@@NathansBMWWorkshop Thanks Nathan. I am very familiar with the failure. Seen it over my 20 years with BMW. I have not yet done the head repair but have used time serts quite a bit. I think i am going to give it a go on my E46...I will check the farthest hole first :)

There is no "next size bigger", BUT, you can get a machine shop to make one! A lot less money and time than replacing the engine.

A 14mm insert? Not much meat left in the block i would think. (Just went to s54 studs in my s52. ) Not sure how 14mm would fit

Cracked block I reckon. Shame after all that work. I race E46 330's (amateur) and have ruined so many engines always cyl 6. I never bother to try and sert them as there are so many scrap engines out there its more reliable to just pull the whole thing and replace it. Can do it eyes shut almost these days. Cooling on these engines is so sensitive its unreal - a microsecond of overheating is all it takes.

There is more wrong there..... your front piston with water in it should be same position as rear... either your front or your rear piston is disconnected

Never ever use an impact driver to run a tap down.... Always tap holes by hand. .No wonder your serts didnt hold...Oh and why is that engine opened up out in the wind and dust.. I promise if you listen to this dude you will always be sitting on the side of the road

It is a TERRIBLE idea to tap threads with any power tool. Do it by hand and do it right. Use oil and feed the tap a half turn and back it out a quarter turn then feed tap three quarter turn back out a quarter feed tap three quarter turn back out a quarter and repeat till done. I bet truth be told using an impact driver and shortcut is why that number 6 hole bit him.

I'm sorry to tell you because you seem like a good person but you work very badly... I saw the video of the first installation of the Timesert size 1.. you absolutely must use a drilling and tapping guide.. .it must be very perpendicular to the block.. and above all you have to use the Timesert tool to fix the timesert in the block... do not use a normal bolt!!! then it is absolutely necessary to use new bolts to reassemble the cylinder head.. the old bolts have lost their elasticity and are for the trash can... For Timesert size 2... you make the same mistake again... it's lost in advance....
