Though already 'biased' towards beemers, have always been struck by the quality, elegance and design of even the simplest machined castings on these things. Harleys and Japanese bikes certainly 'do the job', though everything often seems much more 'crude' and mass-produced, while here it's easy to see how the quality and precision extends to every little well thought-out detail, right down to the guts, all built and assembled with watchmaker-like precision. Well done, thx!

...I've worked on a lot of the M10 and M20 engines and it's always interesting that BMW uses the same type of engineering , tensioners etc , I wouldn't be surprised that some parts from the bike are interchangeable ... M20 and M10 are very similar and easy , fun almost intuitive

The weak link in bmw airhead engines are the camshaft followers. The ones you re installed are well past their use by date. They will destroy the camshaft and eventually the crankshaft when enough metal is generated.

I love the flat airheads but the engines seem so overly complex with all the specialty tools required, sealants, and hard to get to components. Rebuilding a R60/2 engine once was the last time I will ever do that.

Wish I could do that!

Most of what you've seen here is years of experience. To be precise, 12 years of experience with exactly this engine. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a specific book, because it is always important that you like and understand the explanatory style of the explanatory.

Hi Nils I have a 1974 BMW r60/6 that has a problem that nobody can solve. When I start the engine, the rev counter marks 1200rpm and after some time it starts to accelerate by itself until it reaches close to 3000rpm. This happens after 6 to 8 minutes. I wonder why? Thanks
