Yes I'd like to know the oweners thought process on giving the go ahead on this. The logical thing to do is to scrap/sell as is and cut your losses. The problem the owner now has is this could be the start of many other things failing if previously havent already which in turn will make you feel even more compelled to spend on repair costs.

Great video. I used to own a 118d with a N47 and lived in a state of constant fear of timing chain issues. A 2010 3 series with 160k can only be worth around £2k so the owner must really love it!
@abarratt886915 күн бұрын
When working, they're pretty good cars. They're not Euro-6 compliant, but they make an excellent option for a daily driver. I've a slightly newer 3 series Touring with the same engine, at 200k miles and no issues (that's taken diligent servicing and some pre-emptive maintenance). I'm now faced with a decision; put some decent money into it at the 200kmile mark - which will probably make it last for another 100k easy (though, there's a lot of quite old plastic / rubber on that car now - lots of brittle clips!). Alternatively, I could buy a newer one and (probably) have to sink the same money into that at the 100k service, and have a car that - basically - is no better. That's probably what the owner of this one calculated. Yes, it's more money than the car is worth, but the alternative - buying a newer one second hand - is going to cost way more and will still be due a large service bill soon, all while not really provide much more "car". This car now has a thoroughly gone-over engine that'll do 100k no problem at all (with diligent servicing), and so has a value to them that is out-of-step with the wider market's opinion. I think we're in an era where there's a lot about new cars (not just the price) that is putting-off purchasers, and there's not a whole lot about them that is beneficially better than the older ones. Newer ones are not meaningfully more fuel efficient, faster, better handling, or better equipped than, say, an 8 year old car. And I reckon there's plenty who are content with the refinement levels achieved 16 years ago - like the owner of the car in this video. It's almost as if "The Car" reached peak design-refinement in about 2016, or whenever Euro6 came out, and has stopped getting better. Ever since, it's been cost reductions, gimmicks, and the confusion caused by the dash-for-electric vehicles timetable set by the politicians. I will confess to being tempted by a late model F31 with a B47 engine - slightly newer ICE, better economy, Euro 6 compliant, classic BMW looks before they went crazy with styling and monster-sized grills. For any true petrol head it's definitely a dull recipe, but as an affordable daily driver they deliver most of what one could ever want.

@@abarratt8869I don't think many n47 make it to 200k so well done. When it's working it's a great engine but there is just too much that goes wrong.
@abarratt886914 күн бұрын
@@danmoney9932 Still running at the same basic fuel economy too. On a long run it exceeds 50mpg (on those lovely smooth French autoroutes). Argh, but you've got me worried now! I don't want to be writing the authoritative pioneering manual on "how to make an N47 get to 300kmiles", I'd much prefer to be in the company of many like minded maintenance nerds who've already got to 500k!! I am curious as to whether it'll make 250k (moon mileage), and then it's simply a case of where next. If I invest in it, I'd like it to get to 300k I reckon. Maybe if I can get it that far, someone like Sreten over at M539 Restorations on KZbin would get curious and offer a rebuild just to see how well it's actually faired. Small rabbit hole: have you ever seen Chris Harris's impromptu review of a 320d? He and some colleagues / mates hired one to get to the Ring, and on the way did a review of it, so impressed was he at how well it did things like motorway mile munching, whilst still being reasonably engaging off the motoroway. A good all-rounder.

@@danmoney9932 Actually many N47 go well beyond 200,000 miles. All of them which are the N47D20C generation and which have regular oil changes (i.e. 6000 - 7000 mls interval).
@legioner913 күн бұрын
@timday6087: Maybe in UK they worth 2k, because here in mainland Europe an E90 LCI N47 goes for anywhere between 4000 pounds (for junkier ones) to 7000 pounds (for very well maintained ones and loaded).

Timing chains last for life of engine and they don't use a drop of oil even after 500k They can be mapped to 160 bhp and higher with bigger turbo. Bullet proof .

Do you suggest to delete Egr and DPF or not ? About the turbo and chain will save some miles if changed the oil most often ?
@abarratt886915 күн бұрын
The N47 - not BMW's finest moment. However, if looked after, they are actually quite good engines. I've had two. The first came from the factory with the timing chain issue. I had that done before it failed. The second had the revised chain guides from the factory, 200kmiles no problems so far. However, I will be changing the chain and guides soon; this is no longer an engine-out job (there's tools for the job), so it's not too hideous to do. Swirl flaps - yep, not the greatest thing either. Basically, it needs a new inlet manifold (which includes the swirl flaps) and a walnut blast every 100k at least. Turbos - well, that's down to how well and how often the oil changes are done. I've done mine every 10k regardless of what the car says, and no issues so far. So, definitely not an engine to tolerate a lack of maintenance. But, in this day and age, one really questions what's a good engine to have going forward. The N47 doesn't need Ad Blue - it's only Euro 5, not Euro 6 compliant. That means it is notably simpler to keep the emissions system up to scratch than the later engines. With a stock of inlet manifolds and chain guide kits and some maintenance dedication one could probably keep one of these going for a long, long while, in a largely tech-free car such as a 3 series which is an excellent daily driver in many regards.
@danmoney993213 күн бұрын
