BMW N47 Engine Removal

I just bought a 120d SE coup with the notorious N47 engine. Unfortunately the service history includes past 100,000 miles but no timing chain was done so 2 weeks after purchase of said new car the chain bust. Watched your videos of the removal and it seems logical and straightforward in the way you describe it. My concern is getting into the engine itself to check damage from chain snapping. How hard is the job of replacing or sorting out the internal of these engines.

Hi George. I enjoy your tutorials. Regarding removal of my N47 engine(2008 520D, automatic) - is it just to unbolt the bellhouse and split the engine and the gear box as for manual gearbox? Br, Audun.

Torque converter needs to be unbolted from the flex plate

@@GeorgeAusters Have I run into a problem? I am ready to split the engine and bellhouse. But, how do I rotate the converter to get access to the bolts? Is the converter "locked" in Park? A

Would the above apply to the B47 engine, I expect it would and could you leave the gearbox in without taking it out? Would save a lot of time

When you postet a video that your chain is bad i have just found out that mine is too on my BMW E91 2008 177hp. So becouse i dont have tools or work space to do it buy my self i got chain replacement at my local BMW Specialist last week and it is all done now so i hope that it will last atleast another 150000km. How much did it cost you? As I fear the timing chain in my 120d E82 will need replacing soon.

ToastManPat At my local BMW specialist (BMW Matić) It costed 700€ to replace the chain with BMW original parts (sprockets gaskets upgraded chain kit and so on) and BMW long life oil (5.5l) and bosch oil filter. The job took 3 work days.

As long as the engines themselves are the same yes

The engine is the same n47d20a (177 hp) but I hesitate about if the piece for the traction in front axis could affect to set up the engine in a e90 with only rear traction. Or for contrary that piece can be removed simply. My e90 engine has broken the block and I am searching for other and at this moment I have found one used from a e83, but my doubt is the traction to front axis. i suscribe you and save the video, i may do it in the future. can you tell me, why you did lots of work to take engine out, but not open it to check engine component and if necessary replace it? if i would take engine out of car, i would open engine. my n47 has 140000 mile, timing chain make no noise, but the valve by cold start a little.

Can you tell me how to change the timing chain in a X3 2009? Is it easiest to remove the engine totally or remove the gears? I am not a professional mechanic.

Yes, just drop the gearbox off the back but not easy with the car on the floor

Hi congratulations for your videos. I have a question for you. The n47 engine bend the valves if the timing chain is broken?

Thank you. It can bend valves, especially if it snaps at high speed but at the absolute minimum you'll have broken rocker arms which break to try and prevent valve and piston contact. You won't know until you check the intake/exhaust ports

Do the e60's have an electric motor assisted power steering set up, my 1 series does and I'm just wondering if you know if this would effect the removal significantly.

E60s have hydraulic power steering pumps mate. If your 1 series has electric power steering then it won’t have a PAS pump and so will be easier👍🏻

Well you don’t need to remove the engine to replace the timing chain on the N47 or N57, you can just remove transmission. It’s actually much easier on these engines to replace the timing chain as on other engines. You did the job that is totally NOT necessary!

Lol try dropping the transmission and doing the complete timing chain job whilst lying on the cold floor outside. I’d much rather do it in the comfort of my garage whilst having much better access and staying warm👍🏻

George Austers yes, if you don’t have any place with lift, but with removing the engine it probably took few days, with removing transmission can take 6-8 hours easily. Of course, now you have experience.👍🏻

wow thank you so much vitalijs this is what i really needed to hear. i want to do this job myself because my mechanic told me just the kit is like 150 euros, plus 800/900 for the work. so i started doing the math, all i have to do is buy the tools and the kit and do it on my own. any special tools that i will need to do this the way you are saying it? would i need this thing he have holding the engine?

MygenteTV hi, no you don’t need engine holder, but it will be much easier if you have a lift you’ll not be lying on the floor then. You’ll probably need some transmission holder.

@@BUTAJIUK hi thank you for you answer. to be honest i dont care about laying down in the floor the weather is nice in italy as we speak. im just trying to minimize the cost to the minimum. the Corona virus emptied my bank account and this bastards in the government didn't gave me 1 Euro. which is why i want to do this way. just me what exactly i will need and i will do it that way, i have my own indoor garage to work on.
