Thanks you for uploading this tutorial, my chain snapped while driving but by a stroke of luck both my pistons and valves/liters and valavebridges survived so i only needed a new chain and guides/tensioners. And by following your videos my car is back up running now😄 only thing i got stuck on was bleeding the fuel system as mine was so full of air it refused to start so i had to get a vaccum pump to bleed out the air. But after that she starte right up😎👍 so thank you so much for the tutorial, love ur vids

So BMW decided to use a technology (chains) that is supposed to give longer service intervals (but doesn't) and make the task orders of magnitude more difficult by hosting the timing gear at the rear of the engine. All the relative negatives of the belt, plus a few more layers of difficulty.

I think the problem is that they vent from dual chains to these single row bicycle chains. I think it had to do with emissions or efficiency. Shame honestly, good engine other than that.

I know it's a long-shot, but do you by chance know if these engines are susceptible to the timing chain issues ? Certain websites are saying AVOID 2011, 2012 & 2013 Mini Countryman and another source says that BMW fixed the timing chain issue in 2009. Any ideas? Thanks for your time and I look forward hopefully to a response.

Hi George, when in milage terms does a chain need doing, or what gives away the need for it to be done? I was under the impression that these chains are self regulating so in theory do not need changed. Mine has done 210k miles so far and seems OK. I am thinking about doing the serpentine belt and associated pulleys cause that is a little squeaky now and the belt is defo needing doing, but this job is way beyond me despite how well you've documented the process, and figure it may be too much money to throw at a 210k miles machine.

Hi George, when you moved the crankshaft by 45degrees did turn the locking tool clockwise or anticlockwise. I turned my locking tool anticlockwise to align the locking tool, so the 10mm bolt could be bolted. I have the fuel pump on the mark and the camshaft marks lined up. Turned the engine and it locks in a certain position. Any ideas. Thanks Paul

@pjm3000
@pjm3000 Жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, the crankshaft holding tool which is bolted the the side frame of the engine, throws the crankshaft timing off. It's usually common practice to lock camshaft, crankshaft, and fuel pump timing together to ensure there is no movement. BMW are obviously trying to confuse the DIY mechanic. You need to ensure the crankshaft is at tdc. The best way to achieve this is to put a long Philips head screwdriver into cylinder 1, turn the crankshaft until cylinder 1 & 4 are at the highest position. The camshaft marks should also line up. If you time the crankshaft using the crankshaft holding tool the engine will lock up, pistons will hit the valves😢

Hello George,I live in Spain Ibiza and I'm a mechanic here.I have a BMW X1 sDrive 18d 2013 N47D20C.It came to me as it has dumped all its oil into the exhaust thus smoking and depleated the engine oil.Thinking a problem with turbo,checked the intercooler for oil and did'nt find much oil in the intercooler.seams to be breathing heavy.Wondered if you could possibly have any advise please.Strange the car has only done 70k km. season best wishes to you and your family.Regards Doug

Hi George, currently having my timing chain replaced and the engine rebuilt after this failed with no warning signs. It was about due but QQ re the clutch and flywheel do you recommend any to purchase privately or let the garage purchase this? I’ve been quotes no labour costs for this but clutch and flywheel @ circa £600. Engine rebuild has been expensive! I searched for you after watching the vid as you are quite local to me! Didn’t know if you fancied a project 😂

Hi George, i have been watching your videos while i try to repair my X1 N47 engine. your videos are quite thorough and i enjoy them. i have a question about my car. I reside in town called Bunbury in southwest of Western Australia. My car wouldnt start after i turned it off at my friends house. its a MAN transmission. Before i take the engine out and dismantle it to figure out why it wont start i wanted to ask you if you know or have heard of the sypmtom my car has. Initially i thought the piston may have siezed but I can turn the crank about 3/4 turn and it stops there. i can reverse the turn and same thing happens after about 3/4 turn. so pistons are not seized but something is stopping the engine from turning the full circle. i was wondering if you have heard anything like this before. i heard no noise when i stopped the car that suggests something is broken inside. i would appreciate your help. Regards Vish

Hi George, are the two left most parts in your timing tool kit a press to seperate camshaft/high pressure pump sprocket? Looks like there's an internal thread on the camshaft sprocket itself that these parts would screw into to push the sprocket off the high pressure pump shaft, I'll be doing mine soon I reckon after watching these videos - cheer for the great content.

Hi George, very helpful video. Just rebuilding my N47C20A on my 2011 Mini SD. Why is the high pressure pump timed do you think?. When I locked the crank with the tool at 45 degrees ATDC my fuel pump sprocket mark was pointing at 7 o'clock as opposed to the mark which is around 8 o'clock. It's was probably one tooth out. My chains were perfect and the cams were timed spot on. It ran fine before but I have only had it a couple of months and have only just got round to doing it, DM flywheel was the main reason for stripping it. Perhaps it'll surprise me when it's back together mate.....Cheers Rich

The N47 engine? Only way you can view the top chain is to remove rocker cover then the rest you need to remove timing cover
