►The BMW N51, N52, and N52N/N52TU have powered nearly a million cars delivered to US shores over the last few decades. Their good power and relative reliability have made them popular for daily drivers and grassroots racers. However, BMW has issued recall 22V-119 for every single one of them to fix a potentially fatal flaw. Within the intake manifold is a heated sensor for the PCV system, but due to specifics with its wiring, it can catch fire and spread throughout the engine bay.
Replacing the PCV angle connector is only part of the solution because the harness it's connected to also needs modification. BMW has begun recalling the extensive model list, but some vehicles will have to wait because of the enormous volume. However, FCP Euro feels its important for vehicle owners to see the repair process and understand the nature of the problem.

@@blakaxe I've been working on it for 16 months. So the first key has been consistency over a long period of time. I eat better than I did before and cook at home a majority of the time, so quality over quantity there. I also picked up running and have been pushing myself with that since last April. Generally I'm just more active than I was before by choice. I was looking to get more out of life and to do that I needed/wanted to get into better shape. Once the snowball stated rolling down the hill it accelerated and grew from there. I started feeling better and that motivated me to work/push harder. Really its just been about making good choices and holding myself accountable day to day.

Glad it helped provide clarity. The worst part about this entire repair in regards to installing the inline fuse is identifying the wire in the splice which varies from chassis to chassis due to the electronics layout. All the wires in the splice are orange so the only thing you have to work off of is the thickness of the wire. Step 1 is finding the splice and step 2 is identifying the correct wire in the splice. It's outline in this document here: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2022/RCRIT-22V119-8155.pdf

I followed your procedure. I don’t have a mm gauge, but the wire is basically the second largest wire out of the 6 wires. It’s located on the rubber conduit closest to the window because that feeds the driver side of the engine, I.e., angle connector, MAF, etc. thanks for the tutorial. Oh, the 6 wire harness sits inside the rubber conduit. You’ll have to pull the rubber back and find a way to hold it back to get a good cut on the wire. I used a zip tie to keep the rubber conduit back. I have a 2011 328xi auto which has the recall. I did it myself.

I hesitate to take my favorite car for the dealership I have here in town to do electrical recall stuff. My last vehicle that went in for a recall was my e70 for the fuel pump to prevent a fire. The person didn't do proper soldering. Then a week later, it almost caught on fire. Because of that. So I would much rather do the recall myself on my e82. I know it will be right. Awesome information, Gareth! I had BMW take care of mine recently. 2008 E82. Actually I had my car in for new Bridgestone (NON Runflats! 👌🏻) install & alignment and they did this recall at the same service visit. ?: if the inline fuse blows will it throw a code?
@GarethFoley
@GarethFoley Жыл бұрын
No code is thrown if the inline fuse fails. It shares the same power feed as the O2 sensor heater circuit. For the 7.5 amp fuse to fail the angle connector would need to suffer a failure and that's not a likely scenario. Worth checking periodically I suppose but I think it's relatively fail safe in that regard.

Bought a 2009 328i Xdrive two weeks ago. On the second drive the car started overheating. The car still had the original thermostat and waterpump. Replaced both of them with OEM parts from FCP Euro. Fast forward to today and on my way home sitting at a stop light I got a wiff of smoke. I pulled over and saw a very small amount of smoke come from under the drivers side hood near the windshield. I opened the hood and didn't see anything. I drove the car home about 11 miles and when I stopped in the driveway I smelled smoke again. This time I saw it was coming from under the intake. I called our local BMW dealership and they informed me there was no fix for 22V-119 PCV Heater Recall. When I explained to them I was looking at the recall and I they list the fix in the recall notice they told me unless I had a second letter from BMW it wasn't covered. I asked her to check with a service manager first and the company attorney second if the wanted to me to continue to operate a car that had a recall that was actually smoking. After checking with the service manager they concluded that there was a fix for the car and I could bring it in the following day. This is the same dealership that told me the Takata air bag recall wasn't covered under warranty on two other of my BMW's because I wasn't the original owner. I honestly don't know if I want these clowns working on my car. I've bought half a dozen older BMW from them that they deemed beyond economical repair the last one being a 2008 760i they said the valley pan was cracked and that it needed a new motor. I bought the car for $1200 it only had 87k miles on it. I spent about $600 replacing all the coolant hoses and the two Y hoses on top the engine that were actually leaking. The car hasn't leaked a drop in two years now. They just don't want to mess with anything 5 years or older. Not to mention there labor rate now is $225 an hour.

No fault code is thrown if the inline fuse pops. You can check periodically if you'd like but the fuse is only there as a fail safe. It will only break the circuit if there is a problem with the angle connector itself and that's not a very likely scenario.

This is a surprising design lapse. BMW has mostly used fully protected and diagnosable control circuits since the mid-1990s. The typical one is a low side "smart switch" with short-to-ground, short-to-bat and open detection. As part of that, over-current problems are avoided by nearly instantly shutting off the circuit. That protection is part of the "short-to-battery" detection for a low-side switch (a transistor that connects the component to ground, rather than switching the "high side" to +12V battery).
@GarethFoley
@GarethFoley Жыл бұрын
For sure a major design lapse. I'm assume the thought process was the amp draw was so low (which it is) and the likelihood of a problem ever occurring with the regulating element did not justify this added complexity. I'm pretty sure the N52 engine is the first attempt by BMW to utilize a heated system. I believe on a majority of these cars the angle connector is powered off of the same fuse which provides power to the oxygen sensor heaters.

Yes. 22V-119 supersedes two previous safety recalls 17V-683 (December 2017) and 19V-273 (April 2019) respectively: 17V-683 (SIB 11 16 17): static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RCRIT-17V683-0566.pdf 19V-273 (SIB 11 06 19): static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RCRIT-19V273-7002.pdf The two previous recalls were limited to certain vehicles and only replaced the angle connector. 22V-119 expanded the scope of the safety recall and also added the inline fuse + replacement of the angle connector.

Quick question my car was one of the ones that had to go into recall I had an appointment one day on a Tuesday and the day before on a Monday my car would not start after it gave out on me at the light could this somehow be related to the recall, the reason why my starter is not holding a starter able to start? I decided to take it to the BMW dealership one day early after it would not start on me. I had it towed there. They are trying to charge me roughly over $2000 for a new starter. Could this somehow be related?

I have the same questions. I had a new starter installed, car ran for about 2mos. Then, starting issues again... battery was low, and I was told it was the alternator. I'm wondering if this faulty valve is draining power from the vehicle. Did you ever find out for sure what your problem was? Afraid to go to the dealer because I'm sure they'll find something to try to rob me on. The last time I went in for a recall, mysteriously, my 02 sensors up and down lines came up reversed, vehicle could barely drive away from that dealership. It was shaking horribly. They wanted me to pay $250 for diagnostic and only God knows what outrageous repair they were going to try to force me to get, but I declined. Granted, it was rough idling some when I took it in, but when I left, it was noticeably worse. I remember the sales guy telling me this vehicle is not safe to be on the road, I can't let you leave without warning you of how dangerous this vehicle is right now. They def tried to scare me, but I was more scared of them than what might have been wrong with my vehicle. So, I took it to another mechanic who has his own BMW shop, used to work for BMW. They discovered the 02 line mixup, switched them back and my vehicle immediately started running like it was brand new. I fear these stealerships.

Any idea on when the angle connector will have any(better?) availability?

Due to the size of this recall I don't see it being readily available as a retail part in the immediate future. Usually when parts are being used as a part of a massive safety campaign their availability at the retail level is slim to none as the demand is huge and there is only so much supply.

I received a letter about this maybe 6 months ago but they said they hadn't yet worked out a solution and said they would notify me when it becomes available. Not surprisingly, this is the first I am hearing that they now have a solution. They still haven't sent me the follow up letter, so should I just roll up to the dealer now? Like I don't need to wait for some letter telling me to come in? Thanks FCP Euro!

That verbiage is sort of misleading. 22V-119 is as outlined in this video which is the replacement of the angle connector from new stock + the inline fuse. Since 917K cars are part of this recall BMW chose to take care of this in stages. At most, 1% of all vehicles are potentially impacted by this. In order to prevent a massive amount of people from flooding the dealers looking to get this recall sorted at the same time BMW has staged it progressively. You will get notified when your vehicle is in the window to get the recall done. All of these cars are falling under the same procedure. The paperwork from BMW doesn't really tell owners all that much and we wanted to provide a little more context as to what the problem is and what the fix is.

@@GarethFoley I appreciate the info! On another note, my 2008 328xi was built a few months before the lifter upgrade thing. So I have the ticking exhaust lifter problem that I want to address. I heard that BMW does the job at a reduced price for the labor, but also saw that you sell the revised lifters/rockers. Do you have any info about that? I mean as far as, would a good indy do it cheaper or am I better off to go to BMW? I heard that early on they were fixing some cars for free but not sure what to believe about all that. If I choose the indy route, what other preventative things should I address? Valve cover doesn't leak but maybe swap that since nearing 100k? Any sensors to change whilst doing that as well? I heard the eccentric shaft sensor should be changed? Car has 93k miles and I am 2nd owner. It's in perfect condition. Already did the entire coolant system, water pump, mickey mouse connector etc.all bought from FCP. I als happen to live in Wallingford, CT. Thanks! So basically, I plan on keeping this car for a long time and want to address all the weak points. I have had the car for 4 years now.

@@saganworshipper6062 When it comes to the liter noise I know BMW was doing good will repairs on some cars but there was never an official recall for it since it's not a safety problem. It's really more of an annoyance. We have not done a video on this problem but it could be worth it for us to look into it. I've heard some people have diminished the noise by using a heavier oil (5W40 vs 5W30/0W30) and others have used an additive like Liqui Moly LM20004 with good effect to help cut down on lifter noise on the N52 engine. When it comes to preventative maintenance I would consider replacing the valve cover even if it's not leaking. A weak PCV diaphragm will cause oil consumption problems and some cold start weirdness from time to time. Since the PCV system is integrated primarily in the valve cove it's worth replacing just for the sanity check. While you're in there it's not a bad idea to replace the eccentric shaft sensor since its right there and there is no better time to take care of it. If you haven't done spark plugs and coils yet I would do those at the same time or close to the same time. On N52's I like to replace spark plugs ever 50K miles (half the life they are rated for) and replace all the coils at 100K miles. In the coil swap I recommend switching to Delphi coils from Bosch.

@@GarethFoleyThanks for the info! I have tried every additive under the sun...to no avail. From what I have read, it is a physical, mechanical problem that no oil will fix, and I have come to believe this is true. A video on that would be great and I could donate my car as a guinea pig since I'm only 20 minutes from you lol. I know I know, you only work on employees cars. Well, mine is available if you change your mind on that haha. I changed the coils and plugs straight away when I got the car along with replacing the manual trans fluid, both diffs, and transfer case with all OE genuine BMW fluids and everything was bought from you guys. I will go ahead and change the valve cover and the shaft sensor when I decide to do the lifter job. Funnily, I received the letter from BMW about the recall just yesterday so either I am one of the early ones or it has been sent to everyone. Either way, thanks!

Do you know exactly WHAT the "software" update recall is on new 2024 X5 BMWs? I paid for my new car 7/11/23 and 2 days later they called to say they would NOT be releasing my new car until the software has been finalized and released. Kind of funny I buy a luxury new car and can't drive it.
