I work at the bmw plant in the United States. We make x3-4-5-6-7-m. They are planning to build a battery plant right here as well. Also, they are getting ready to get rid of some suppliers and making some of the stamping parts at this location. The funny thing is for me is that I owned a tesla and a lot of people inside the company cannot deal with the fact that I like electric vehicles. Now, the leadership at BMW are silent about that recall. I have asked a few people about it. Nobody talks about it. They play dumb or change the subject.

It must piss those losers off that teslas have cameras. No more fucking with "foreign cars" in the parking lot. It is even worse at ford and gm plants. They harass coworkers for buying better cars if they are not the right brand and normally try to damage them, but can't with teslas and their cameras. It is bizarre loyalty to an employer that gives zero loyalty in return to deserve it.

I was seriously wondering when they were going to retool Spartanburg. We have virtually no electric X models here. After the nationwide tour, I've only seen one iX in the wild. They are clearly focused on their low volume vehicles in the US until they have the capacity to build profitable higher volume models at scale (iX3)

Software is what scares me with German cars. I had a 2021 Mercedes (non-EV) and had to get rid of it because it was full of software gremlins. I was ok when weird things happened in the garage and local roads; but when it turned off on the highway going 70MPH and the screen said software error and I had to troubleshoot it in traffic to get it back on, that was the last straw and had to get rid of it. Most annoying, the dealer would always tell me they couldn’t find any records of the issues even though I had time stamps and had it recorded on dash cam (which one time they even said my dash cam might be causing the issue - typical dealer trying to pass the blame).

The only way to get service from legacy auto is to print out proof of a tsb, recall, or others having the same issue and give that to the mechanic when setting up service. A relative just had to do this to fix known issues on her shitty ford under her warranty. The shop refused to do it until confronted with a tsb number. If it happens to me, I am going straight to the manufacturer and having them tell the shop to fix it. The manufacturer is the one legally required to honor the warranty, not the dealerships. Dealerships will lie to you to your face about known tsbs and tell you a covered issue is magically not covered by the warranty. I drive a volt and will be switching to a tesla when the powertrain warranty expires mid 2024. It is not a car you can own out of warranty because they aren't making parts for it and can overcharge you on price for any part they still have in stock.

Bought a Mini for my wife (now ex) in 2004, felt really solid and quality in the fixtures and its still running in 2023. Went back to look at Mini's a few years ago, and you could feel the drop in quality. Drove a 2002 BMW 3 series until I trashed it in an accident in 2014, great car. Now drive a 2014 223i a great little car - more like the old BMWs before they got supersized and over-tech'd. Will keep driving this for a few years, next car won't be a BMW.

Last year 2022 we had our 2010 BMW 750 towed and sold as parts. New the car sold for over 100k and we spent over 32K in repairs from 80k to 162k in miles. We junked it because even if we repaired 15k at best the car the car was only worth 10k. We replaced it with a Tesla Model Y performance. And it’s a flawless car.

"BMW owners can continue to drive their vehicles while waiting for a software update to fix the problem, the automaker says. The update will be provided by dealerships free of charge, and letters to affected owners’ vehicles will go out next month recommending they bring their vehicles in for a fix." - This incident just points out how important software design is. They obviously have not prioritized the basics -- This cannot be fixed with Over the Air Updates - Bad management, bad software team, lack of leadership and so on.. The bosses are not listening to the people doing the work, letting this garbage out in the real world - My guess is that the software team has no seat at the table when having important meetings on design and direction.

@@kairikkola No trolling here. I'm talking about my personal (bad) experience with that particular crappy 1996 American't BMW Z3 build quality (or lack of). I had 4 other (German) Beemers, all were good except the last one that blew a radiator hose. You have obviously had a good one (Z3). How did you get away without having any recall fixes (like the ones I had to do)? American build quality is renowned for being crappy, which is why I waited to get a chinese built Tesla Model Y. No faults so far - other than phantom braking, but this seems this is a common problem, not just with Tesla. I've spoken with owners of a 5 year old Mercedes C Class, and a 12 year old Volvo, both of which have experienced similar problems with braking when adaptive cruise control is enabled. I suspect it may just be a symptom of the system being 'too' sensitive IMO.

Talking about quality and legacy auto competency, I took my VW ID3 into the dealer today ahead of their requiring it on Monday 23rd Jan 2023 [for those reading this down the years]. Because I have to work, I can't take it in on Monday, so today was the day. On exiting the 21 month old car and walking round it, I noticed that, not only was there a known big condensation issue on the nearside matrix headlamp, which the dealer knows all about, now the offside headlamp is sporting some too. And when I took the car in for its original recall date, just before Xmas, I was advised to pick it up the same evening as two ID3s and one ID4 had gone unresponsive after being given the same recall fixes. And I wanted my 100% functioning ID3 over Xmas week. So its gone now. It's a lease car, and I'm definitely not going to buy it outright. Actually, I never intended to. It was my first full BEV and I judged that far better ones will come along during my 3 years of stewardship. Tbh, the ID3 is a very nice car, but hugely let down by its awful software. I'm assured that the "issue" is now over. The dealer asked to keep the car FOR A WEEK, just in case there were any more foibles. They offered me a courtesy car - a VW Polo. Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not going back to ICE even for a week. I'll ride my e-bike. So, what's the recall? Replacement of 12V battery with a better one, and a software upgrade to the latest edition, which is V3.N [N for I can't remember exactly which version]. After that I should receive OTAs again. And have 2 new headlamps, of course. So not only did BMW get a free pass from the media, but VW did too. Which is kind of odd given that VW are famous for Dieselgate. I guess it helps that they're not called Tesla.

The media hates Elon Musk for bringing free speech to Twitter. I am no Tesla fanboy due to their poor quality control, lack of concern for customer privacy (recording everything that happens in and around their cars), and anti-consumer stances when it comes to third-party repairs and parts availability. But you have to acknowledge how unfairly Tesla is treated by the media.

Sam, I've never been a big fan of BMW but I just wanted to let you know that we experienced the same power failure in our 20-day old Tesla Model Y LR on January 17th. My wife was driving to work during morning rush hour traffic on an interstate highway when the car just shut down a traumatized her. She blocked the center lane of traffic with cars zipping by on either side at 65+ mph. Panic stricken, she called me and I had her reboot the car (2 button restart) because the screen was still working. This worked and she made it to work safely after disrupting freeway traffic and upset hundreds of drivers.😟👎

BTW: The Tesla Service Center had our car for a day and a half and stated that it has a "known issue" that they are unable to address currently and we'll have to wait for an over the air update to correct it.

When the car shut down, was it like an ICE car running out of gas, that you can use the remaining momentum to change lane onto the shoulder, or was it a very quick deceleration that gave her no time to react? I want to know because we also have a Model Y and my wife also uses it as a commute car.

@@lordlee6473 My wife said she didn't have time to react. The car just gave 3 quick beeps (like the ones you hear if you try to put the car in "drive" without pressing the brake) then flashed "shutting down now" on the screen and quickly slowed to a stop. She was then stuck in the center lane. We are thankful there was not a pileup that morning.

That sounds terrifying. The only saving grace is that there's likely to be an OTA update, which many of the ICE manufacturers can't even do. Sensible move to got to USB-C cables for many reasons, but slightly surprising to hear they've got a thumb drive for doing this that people would remove just to charge a phone (because they don't just slap a couple of USB-A ports in there for all the legacy phone users).

You are right. I had a BMW and at 45k miles all the seals melted yes melted. And all the plastics in the intake pipes got damage to include the sensors. I had so many problems I don’t recommend no one to get a bmw. By 80k the time chain guide made of plastic was breaking plus the valve cover needed to be replace. BMW is a bunch of cheap plastic that breaks easy. Garbage

I REFUSE to buy a LOT of new cars because... A LOT OF tech, features and, ahem, 'Luxuries' that are ALREADY installed/fitted to the car ARE NOT 'Ready to use', and so you HAVE to sign up for 'Subscriptions' (monthly or yearly) to use them. At one time it was a case you bought the car outright, you KNEW what it had/could do, and, it was yours with EVERYTHING working, the ONLY thing you really needed to pay extra on a regular/subscription basis was - the inbuilt SatNav... NOW.. It's Heated seats, heated steering wheel, massaging seats, linking up this, mood lighting that, luxury the other, power modes whatever... Go to ANY car manufacturers website, pick a mid to top level model, 'Spec it up' and look at all the features you COULD/CAN have, and then see how much all those 'Little extras' add up to a huge amount of $/£ per month/year. IT'S RIDICULOUS!. IT'S ALL INSTALLED IN THE FECKIN CAR ALREADY! But, if you want those extras you have to pay extra just to feckin use them!!! They are doing it on Motorcycles too! BMW do it, KTM and their rip off 'Demo Mode' - you get ALL features like rider aids, power modes etc etc for the first 1,500Kms/932 Miles, that then, the next time you turn that key to start your bike up, those 'Extras'?? Yeah.. They JUST STOP WORKING/DISAPPEAR 😠. You either just 'Lump it' and continue owning and riding a 'Disabled' bike or, go to an official KTM dealer and pay for the features you want unlocked again. AND NO, even though you CAN connect your KTM 890 Adventure R to your mobile phone, NO, you CAN'T just go online to KTM website, select the features, pay up, and then get your phone to tell your bike to unlock them (a lot of modern bikes have a phone link system). It's like these manufacturers are a kind of Mafia, want their hands in everything you do, con us, extort from us, and, control what we do with OUR vehicles. Like with cars, motorbikes, phones, tablets/other tech, at some point everything else... IF you buy it OUTRIGHT.. IT SHOULD BE YOURS OUTRIGHT.... 😠 So NO... They can GET FECKED...STUFF their new cars (and some new bikes), I'll save the planet MY WAY by buying second hand, maintaining it, and... Enjoying ALL the built in features WITH NO EXTRA COST! It's like this right to repair, the best way to stop MOST of the stuff we have ending up in landfills/tips, is by repairing and continuing to use the stuff we have with LESS WASTE, BUT NO, manufacturers prefer if you, buy new, use, accidentally drop (damage/crack screen) or wet damage your phone/tablet/lappy/whatever, just chuck it in the bin and then go and buy new again. COSTLY. WASTEFUL. HARMFUL. DAMAGING. 😠😠😠 😎🇬🇧

Except they didn't rush. BMW started developing these EVs in 2018 or even earlier, making the announcement they were going to spend a billion dollars or so developing a new shared platform to use on ICE, hybrid, and EV cars. Likely they started working on the project long before the announcement. I told everyone at the time that the BMW EVs based on a shared platform would suck. There is no way to make a competitive EV on a shared platform, you end up with a much heavier car with that hump in the floor for the transmission on the ICE version existing for the EVs too.
