I think your discussion indicates how Aprilia got the RSV4 so right that they haven’t had to do much other than tweek and refine so that it’s still a major force among the Superbikes of today. As you’ve said as well, there are no bad bikes just different flavours.

I must say as an owner of a 2020 BMW s1000rr Msport with stage2 BT moto tune and mods, the bike has plenty or character. The bike is a ruthless killer. Insane power and the lack of weight is confusing. You feel like it should have R6 power, but no, well over 200. It's an insane beast of a machine with the highest level of refinement. She's an absolute savage!!! I feel like it's underrated at this point.

It’s a shame Aprillia don’t have such a great dealer network, my nearest is essentially a Piaggio scooter shop and when I enquired about a test ride in 2018 they just shrugged. Both great bikes though!

Great review. I've had a M Sport for over a year now. Agree stock its just way to quiet. It sounds like a scooter. Full Akra system fixed that. It also vibrates a lot but a set of bar ends also reduced that by quite a considerable margin but its still there. (I had a Blade before and that was super smooth).

I think the reason why I’d rather have the liter bike over the 600 doesn’t come down to the power. It cones down to the package. I want auto blipper, I want all of the more advanced electronics and creature comforts of the liter bikes these days but in a 600 package. I wouldn’t mind paying liter bike base package money for a full electronics packaged 600. You guys were spot on about not needing all that power, and you’re correct. The power isn’t the main reason people are buying these things.

A little unfair in the scoring. In saying that I agree with 99% of your scores. Scored as a stock bikes: The BMW got penalised for having carbon wheels and the Aprilia got points for the Acro exaust even though they were both stock items. BMW lost points for having BMW branded brakes even though they worked better than the Brembos on the Aprilia. It is amazing what branding can do to your head. BMW lost points on suspension because they were not branded Ohlins. But they worked just as good if not more comfortable. but no bragging rights there. syndrome

Having owned a BMW S1000rr and now a 2019 Aprillia Tuono I can say that these comments and statements are spot on. It’s about how the 2 brands go to market. I absolutely loved my BMW it was faultless and was so easy to ride. Makes a crap rider good! However, due to city commuting etc I want a more upright position. The aprillia on the other hand has character the BMW didn’t. But that’s good and bad. But that sound when you twist the throttle makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. So each to the own they are both great bikes.

@@LambChopRides the price of the two bikes was brought up quite a few time's. Do a video of a new bike, half the price and compare that in the same points structure - bet it wouldn't get half the point's = you pay a lot more for marginal gains the closer to the edge you get!!!

@@prothewful Yes but no one ever pays retail! I got my Tuono on sale $$$ way below list and they also had a promotion to throw in Akro pipe and Race ECU tuning for free worth about $3000 AUD. To be honest the factory model is great but you pay a lot for not a huge amount of gains I agree Matthew. However the base model is cheaper than the M model of the BMW and so the choice is once again how much bling do you want. Both base bikes are awesome if you have the spare cash then spec it up. Lets be honest forged wheels... None of us a really good enough riders to ever really notice the difference!

Great stuff as always Chops and Greg!! Closest I can come to this is I've been able to try a '17 S1000RR and a '18 MV Agusta 675 F3. Not common bike here in Alaska I've been lucky. The BMW is the sophisticated German rocket that does everything well and is effortless to go fast on. The MV is the quirky Italian that makes you work for every corner and is almost more fun. Overused phrase for Italian bike but it has soul!!

I don't know about that, a 10 year old RSV4 costs about the same now as a 10 year old S1000RR so I'd say they both have the same sort of "classic potential". Aprilias just aren't Ducatis in that sense, as much as some of their fans would like to think so, as something like a 1198 costs quite a bit more than those other two today, especially if it's one of the higher spec/limited edition ones.

I’ve owned or ridden all the super nakeds and Aprilia Tuono was the best hands down. Power, chassis, ride, feel, fun, sound. Did everything amazingly. Now one I haven’t tried is the new 2020 Super Duke R and I’ve heard they improved the chassis significantly from the previous year which is the one I owned. That was the biggest downfall. And side-note, if you’re getting one of these bikes for the street get the naked version. Not a question.

I kinda like the way the BMW is quite er and you don't hear it over 50mph but at that stage on most bikes the wind noise starts to crowd all other noises out anyway so its not such a big deal. Also for resale I feel the BMW would sell more readily here in Ireland than any Aprilia. Delighted with my new S1000RR m package so far and not one fault or recall with 2,500km up on it now.

It's a choice between the Teutonic quest for engineering perfection and Italian style and panache. Given that I'm very secure in my heterosexuality, I purchased the BMW S1000RR M a year ago. The Italian bling factor doesn't mean as much to me because I care infinitely more about what it does for me vs. others (especially when parked). I now have almost 10,000 miles on it, both street and track. It was exceeded my high expectations. But the RSV4 is a great bike and would have been worth more consideration had I fit on it better. I'm 6'2" with old knees and I just found the Ape a bit too crunchy. The warranty and dealer network of BMW are first class in the US. Finally the BMW electronics (Bluetooth integration, performance metrics app, etc.) are brilliant.

Only the aprilia look and sound are enough to choose this motorcycle over another Japanese or BMW

From my perspective, both suppliers have done a really nice job, but with different conceptions. The BMW is designed for road use and frequent race track use. The Aprilia is designed for race track use but can be used on roads either. If you consider that both bikes might be used about 80% in road use, there is a clear winner: The BMW S1000 RR M-Package. She is nicer and more comfortably to drive on the road. The seat position is better and less exhausting. The motor has more midrange power. And the BMW is less loud than the Aprilia and you don't risk so much to disturb other people. For motorcycle enthusiasts, the Aprilia might offer more flair and a much nicer V4 sound to the owner. But practically the BMW takes a big win on the road.

@ubu 9 Off course.... cheap plastic like the carbon rims, right? From my perspective you've got something wrong here. Plastic is saving weight compared to metal. Guess what, which bike has only 193 kg? The BMW. So, what's the advantage of the carbon parts of the Aprilia, hmm? And please remind the following: If BMW would choose to enlarge the motor to 1100 ccm like Ducati and Aprilia, the BMW would have 227 HP and 131 Nm of torque and both of the Italian bikes would only see the BMW from behind. Not bad for a 5.000 $ looking Chinese bike, isn't it? By the way: the Chinese have copied the iconic design of the BMW, not vice versa. And they simple did it because in China the assistant is always trying to copy the real master to honor his capacity in creation. Where's the Chinese Aprilia RSV4 copy???

BMW more mid-range than Aprilia? No sir. Not accurate. The torque band starts lower on the V4. They always do vs in-line 4s as the latter requires revving much higher. The V4 will pull out of corners with greater immediacy. The M1000RR is north of €30K or $32K and doesn't come with Öhlins full suspension (steering dampener, front forks and rear suspension) and Brembo brake calipers. The newer S1000RRs and M1000RR come with lower spec Marzocchi suspension, cheaply painted blue rear sets (not even Gilles Tooling as in older HP4), and Hayes (American made) brake calipers with the BMW branding. Not to mention two other things. 1) The graphics package looks cheap. 2) BMW on the world stage in racing series like World SBK are failures. They haven't won anything like their rival companies (KTM, Ducati and Aprilia in MotoGP), Aprilia's 4 WSBK constructors titles. Pride of ownership is important. I like to know the bike I have has a rich, winning pedigree.

PS: I humbly disagree with your result, guys. The Aprilia gets a lot of points for her Brembo and Öhlins components and for the carbon parts that are used. I don't get the advantage of this. Functionally the Marzocchi Suspension on the BMW works more comfortable and therefore less exhausting on the road. And the Hayes brakes are as good as the Brembos concerning outcome. It's seems that the Aprilia got more points just for brand names and not the performance. If you look at the carbon bling-bling on the Aprilia, this is just optical but less functional stuff. The BMW ist lighter than the Aprilia and has carbon, where it's really needed: at the rims. If you'll change all these mentioned point for the BMW, there's a clear winner. Not the RSV4. It might be different on the race track. But in road use, the BMW is the clear winner. I my eyes you've been emotionally distorted by the Aprilia and her heartwarming sound.

even on the track the s1k would be the winner! The electronic assists make that bike easy to lay down faster and faster lap times. It's one of the easiest 1k's to hop on the track on.
