We put the three class-leading superbikes head to head at Thunderhill Raceway Park to decide the 2019 Cycle World Superbike Shootout winner. Will the 2019 Ducati Panigale V4 S retain it's edge in the category? Or will the all-new 2020 BMW S 1000 RR or big-bore 2019 Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory take the crown?
All bikes fitted with - Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC
Arguments will be made for other categories of sportbikes, but nothing delivers the emotion-evoking exotic personality and outright performance like a modern-day superbike.
Each is a brutally fast piece of industrial art optimized with everything it needs to strive for the fastest lap time and nothing it doesn't. Superbikes are simultaneously raw yet refined. These machines are built solely to push the boundaries of pure performance, but addictive personalities beware: Superbikes can and will induce obsessive horsepower highs.
So, while there are a number of sportbikes on the market that mix in more practicality and comfort at a more affordable price, the open-class superbikes here-the Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory, BMW S 1000 RR, and Ducati Panigale V4 S-represent the pinnacle of motorcycle performance. With these machines, a combination of mass horsepower and knife-edge handling makes previously unthinkable lap times easily obtainable, while a rock-solid chassis begs to push the limit a little further. Of course, pushing the envelope means increasing the consequences, but sophisticated rider aids have made this level of superbike performance more accessible than ever.
Accessibility of raw capability is one thing, but cost of entry is something entirely different. Each bike being priced at roughly $25,000 makes for an exclusive owner's club. But what you get with any of these motorcycles is racing DNA drawn from the front lines of MotoGP, and they also form the basis for cutthroat World Superbike competition-right down to the winglets. Buying a modern superbike has moved beyond just buying the bike with the most horsepower; it has become about owning exoticness, and getting the best a manufacturer has to offer.
And in the case of Ducati, this means the Panigale V4 S, which claimed Cycle World's Best Superbike title in our 2018 Ten Best Bikes voting. Sure, there is the FIM-homologation-special Panigale V4 R with its superbike-legal 998cc, but comparing the rest of the current crop of literbikes to the class-leading street offering from Ducati with its burlier 1,103cc engine is only sensible.
Aprilia's best? The big-bore RSV4 1100 Factory. Updated with an additional 79cc, top-shelf braking components, and MotoGP-derived aerodynamic winglets, this is a refined version of an already-potent platform-and stiff competition for Ducati.
BMW has something to say to its rivals, redesigning the 2020 model-year S 1000 RR from the ground up with a revised inline-four, a narrower and lighter chassis, and more sophisticated electronics. Oh, and the up-spec M and Select packages (an additional $3,700 and $1,400) come equipped with carbon-fiber wheels and semi-active electronic suspension. Thankfully, we were able to get ahold of one, much thanks to San Jose BMW employee and local racer Cory Call, who loaned Cycle World his privately owned M model for the track test.
We also requested the multitime Ten Best Bikes-winning YZF-R1M for the fun, but Yamaha declined. With updates made to the forthcoming 2020 model, the company decided to wait for next year's shootout, which is already shaping up to be an even higher-speed showdown.
The Test
Exploiting absolute open-class performance requires worthy testing grounds, and for the 2019 Cycle World Superbike Shootout, it meant Thunderhill Raceway Park's 3-mile road course for two full days of private testing. Thunderhill's variety of fast sweepers, hard-braking zones, dramatic elevation changes, and fifth-gear straightaways puts each bike to the detailed scrutiny of our testing staff, which included current licensed professional roadracers, longtime moto journalist and motorcyclistonline.com editor Adam Waheed, Red Bull stunt lunatic-I mean, street freestyle motorcycle artist-Aaron Colton, and legendary CW road test editor emeritus Don Canet.
Our vote for equal and abundant grip came by mounting Pirelli Supercorsa SC race rubber to each contender. (It is important to note Ducati’s stock rear-tire spec is a 200/60, but only a 200/55 is available in this tire.) Then we weighed, measured, and ran the bikes on the Cycle World in-house dyno.
At last, it was time to inject our veins with superbike stimulants.

Devil is in the detail. Different regs mean different settings for emissions. If it's a 50 state bike it will need to meet Cali standards which is why it gets the flatspot but there is also the difference between Euro 3/4/etc specs which also make a massive difference. Pure stupidity to keep strangling bikes which do little mileage and damage in the first place while leaving planes to do what they like and moving the whole EU parliament every month for no reason.

Through the years as the new bikes come out, first S1000RR, R1M, Ducati V4S in the year of the new model they were compared with RSV4 and would be chosen as the best bike of the year. When the hype of the new bike is gone, whenever the journalist would do another test of superbikes RSV4 would be THE number 1, and that consistently from 2010. That says a lot about how good that bike as a concept is. The same goes for the other Supernakeds vs Tuono.

So if you got the s1000rr flashed and threw on a full Akra system would that change opinions? Given the $2,500 difference between the BMW and the Aprilia that would offset that. @@krayzieegg7294 It didn't rape the Aprilia at all, yes it beat it but didnt rape it, furthermore you can clearly see in the 44teeth video they had the Aprilia with the "sport" map selected on every drag race!, Why would you drag race in the Sport map? its the least aggressive map out of the 3 maps you can select on the Aprilia!, unless you haven't done your research on which map is the most aggressive and which map is the least aggressive map?, "Sport" being the least and the "RACE" map being the most aggressive, that alone ruined their comparison for me!, if you look at the Aprilia screen in this video they had the race map selected, also talking about flashing the BMW, almost everyone that buys a new Aprilia dumps the Kated AKRA puts on the none kated Akra and installs the Aprilia Race ECU, so doubt a flash on the BMW would still beat the Aprilia.

yes I see your point, but on track its running in the higher RPM range anyway not in the lower midrange so there wouldn't be much difference. but if you have to spend $1000 or so to have a re-map you are more likely going to add an exhaust $$$$ more .... it kind of makes it not comparable - as to be fair you would then put a full system and flash the Ducati & Aprilia .... Either way all 3 are epic and way above the Japanese competition !

@Turbo329 4 жыл бұрын
@@sk2283 You're only half right. Depending on the track and the corner, you could be right in the flat spot of the powerband and lose "POP" off the corner when driving out. Two bike lengths lost coming off a slow to moderate speed corner is 2 tenths of a second. Multiply that by how many slow to moderate corners you have on any given track and the time lost per lap is huge.

In the MCN comparison he specifically mentions the flaw of the intrusiveness of the BMW electronics -- which the CW comparison speculated as the reason for the numb feelings. In addition both comparisons mention how the BMW needs to be revved more -- almost like a 600 -- to get proper speed. And I believe the lap-time order was exactly the same between the two comparisons. The subjective opinions of the Aprilia were also mostly alike. My point being the comparisons were remarkably similar, Euro-tuning on the BMW excepted. Semantics excepted.

MCN was running 3 full page adverts for BMW that week and their tester has been given one for a year as his long term test bike ..... Aprilia don't do favours or big ad spends in the UK. Also on track with a neutral rider the Aprilia still came out quickest in the MCN test .... But either way all 3 of them are amazing, pick the one you like best not the one some tester does, it's your money ! I have ridden all of them and own a 2017 RSV4RF and agree with the testers here, the Ducati is the wild ride, BMW a bit underwhelming, the Aprilia stable smooth and useable. All get 99/100 from me !

Difference may be big, but why talk about fair comparisons without other important factors? Or you prefer to leave them out because it breaks your case? Like how old is the Aprilia chassis/platform? Or how the Ducati is race bread, or how most bmw owners have a stick up their derriere? It's top three bikes in the world right now. That, and how much $$$ will come out of your wallet.

@iTxip

Why people keep thinking wsbk bikes are stock?? Do you know how much money would cost you to get a regular zx10rr to anywhere near the ones of wsbk?? Kawasaki and ducati are the teams with the most money on wsbk they have the best riders and the best bikes in the championship. That doesnt mean the bike you buy at the dealership is like Rea's. Maybe after spending 40k in performance parts it will be similar to Toprak's bike
@RobertOrtiz1015
@RobertOrtiz1015 4 жыл бұрын
iTxip seriously... perhaps you need to do a bit more research on the subject... All bikes must retain their original production chassis constructions and designs whilst the use of carbon fibre, titanium and magnesium alloys are limited.! The tune changes but engines and most of the bikes are what you see in the show room! Sbk cant even use carbo breaks or carbon wheels! Hahaha Ducati is using their 40k v4 and kawi uses the zx10!
@iTxip
@iTxip 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobertOrtiz1015 they have to retain the main chassis and engine block. But they can upgrade so much else. They use steel rotor brakes but not the ones in the production bike and calipers are definitely not the same. A LOT of engine parts are not the same, subchassis can be lighter weight, full swingarm (I remember this exact price limit cause i thought it was ridiculous) Is 12K. Ducati is the manufacturer with the most expensive base bike (40k which is the limit imposed by wsbk rules, the full bike cost after performance parts is around 150-160k), but dont make the mistake of thinking any bikes stay stock or under 40k. There is not a single bike in that grid under 100k, except maybe the least resourceful of the private teams. Also ECU and electronics is the same hardware for everyone so the bikes with better electronics on stock form cant actually use that edge. If it was my decision to make i would make the rules so the only mods alowed would be elimination of road legal restrictions: lights, emissions compliant intake/exhaust/ECU mapping, body panels and not much else.
@RobertOrtiz1015
@RobertOrtiz1015 4 жыл бұрын
iTxip still dont get the point you are trying to make my friend! If Ducati takes their top of the line vr4 and kawi takes the zx10rr and both make it a wsbk and stick to restrictions and rules of the league... and kawi still wins! For years in a row!!! Wouldn’t that make kawi better? Now i can say that Honda is not better than Ducati even tho Marc Marquez has destroyed Ducati!!! Why? Because motogp is specifically design machine and doesnt start as a homolagation bike! So ducati starts with 50k bike and modify and kawi starts with an 17k bike and spanks them! Lmao.... with all the restrictions and rules, especially since 2018 changes and still! Ducati even tried cheating hahahaha
@iTxip
@iTxip 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobertOrtiz1015 Sorry, I thought my point was obvious, maybe it wasnt. The point is the production version of the kawa is just not as good as the production version of these 3 bikes. Same with the honda and even more so, because marquez being the best rider and having the perfect motogp bike for him and the way hes mopping the floor with everyone does not mean the CBR is better than the panigale V4 or the yamaha R1 or the Rsv4. Also, kawa also uses a homologation special, the zx10rr (double R) not the zx10r and it costs around 27k. It's not actually faster stock, but engine block is reinforced so it can be modded to the extent needed to get a winning bike
