And to keep that ball near the end to close to 85mph traveling that far really is phenomenal. Many people can throw 85mph, but for about 100 feet. This guy tripled that. Not to mention the accuracy.
@Bryan_Lion2 жыл бұрын
Accounting for wind resistance, at initial release, the ball may have been traveling at over 100 mph when it left his hand. Would 85 mph be an average or mean velocity?
@richiehunt50972 жыл бұрын
@@Bryan_Lion you're correct. Funny because I was watching videos on outrfield throws and their velocity the other day and realized I didn't consider that they measure it from the ball releasing the hand. The 85 mph would be the rough mean velocity and I felt that was a little on the conservative side. I'm guessing that if you measured from the release of the hand it was probably in the 104-108 mph range.

Also, its not shown well in video but Harold Reynolds said he jumped or just kind of spun to throw it. He didn't plant his feet. Two points: 1) Regarding the first play on the video, the announcer initially said, "The Royals got a break on that one," meaning because the home plate umpire was out of position. What is implied by this is that the runner was really out, but Bo indeed nailed him! And the announcer did indeed concede a few seconds later that the runner was indeed out. 2) Holy Holy: if you guys slow the last play of the video down to .25, you will see that the base runner's hand was maybe millimeters, not centimeters, from touching the plate, if he indeed did not actually touch it. Amazing how close it was if you slow it down. And if indeed he was out, I don't think he would have been out if a mere mortal would have thrown that cannonball! Bo, you were and are an inspiration! Thank you if you are reading this.

Bo's throw from deep left field to home plate has to be one of the best (I would say the best) throws of all time. Perhaps only Bo, which is why he is a singularly remarkable figure among the pantheon of greatest athletes to ever walk this planet.

@@bauerj3398 You missed the point. The throw was a strike thrown from the warning track in left field to home plate without a moment of hesitation.
@bauerj3398 Жыл бұрын
@@scottjackson638 I am addressing the ludicrous statement that it was the 'best throw of all time', and even more ludicrous that only Jackson would attempt it. The simple fact that players make 300 foot throws in the majors all the time, bypassing the cut-off, means that statement is nonsensical. Simply put, it was a great throw, but any suggestion that Jackson was the only one capable and/or willing to do it, is nonsense.
@scottjackson638 Жыл бұрын
@@bauerj3398 Notice that the ball caromed off the wall, and Bo turned and fired flat-footed with no crow hop or running start. Bo released the ball from just inside the warning track, 310' away about the time Harold Reynolds rounded third base. Royals catcher Bob Boone was already walking off the field when he realized Bo was going to try to make the throw. The throw reached Boone in the air, in the strike zone, who tagged out Reynolds. Reynolds later said that it was the "greatest throw in the world." Others have made the exact same claim, including a number of major league players and coaches. Notice that announcer made the statement "he can't do it" because it looked impossible to make the throw. The coaches protested after the play because making the throw seemed impossible. The fans went nuts because the throw seemed impossible. The play lives in history among baseball fans because the throw seems impossible. In interviews, this throw has been mentioned repeatedly because it seemed impossible. Again, I never said that only Bo was able to make that throw. Further, I never said that only Bo would attempt it. But of course, Bo did try to make the throw and he succeeded. Your aggression doesn't make you right, it just makes you aggressive.
@bauerj3398 Жыл бұрын
@@scottjackson638 First of all, he most definitely stepped into the throw, as he gathered the ball at the seam of the warning track and released the ball a fall stride onto the outfield 'grass'.
