JAWS is fun in a box! Super thematic! There appears to be an editing hiccup around 7:25 when discussing Brody and his barrel carrying ability: first the ability is presented incorrectly and then it is presented mostly correct (carry one barrel at a time, BUT place it under the Brody meeple). The key for the Crew is to coordinate attacks, which could take a game's worth of experience to understand how. My daughter Ali played the shark and just sat at North Beach feasting on swimmers - delighting as we debated where she had moved to!

This is a pretty interesting design to analyze. First part of the game is feels very tactical and skill based, while the 2nd part leans more towards luck with the dice and guessing where the shark will be. First part took about 30 min, 2nd part took about an hour. Assuming that ratio holds constant, you're having players do about a third of the game just for some luck mitigation BUT what you are doing is so much fun that many players won't mind. I'd like to hear from some people that have played the game a few times about if part 1 has a big impact on how well you do in part 2. A+ for thematic ties though!
@Blakestefer5 жыл бұрын

@ 1:13:20 your movement example is incorrect. you can't move past the bow (or stern). It sure looks like you can however on BGG the designer was asked and responded: "Those water spaces are not considered to be adjacent, that is until both front pieces or both back pieces are at least damaged. We had to account for a bit of shifting on the press, so we had to leave a little bit of space before the edge of the tile, so I admit it's a little ambiguous, especially in front. We will be sure to add this to the FAQ when we put it together (soon)." They're going to need a bigger FAQ. There's been a few. I've found a lot of designers or publishers are at least when a game initially comes out on BGG.
@DalaiFelinto3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It took me a bit to understand what you meant, but I found the BGG post and it is all clear to me at least. I guess thematically you want to stay away from the engine and make sure the boat doesn't run on top of you? Thus they are not adjacent until they are both broken (engine or front).

I just got this game so it was nice to see a play through. I thought the shark was moving close to shore in order to dodge the barrels and one should have been used closer instead of multiple out in the water as a block. Later, I said out loud (LOL) during the act 2 item discussion "No, go with the flare right out of the gate don't save it!" That would have dealt damage early on and possibly narrowed the surface selections so all the players could gang up for a couple early rounds. I think it was a big mistake to save these few items for later (I'm not even sure the net and chum got used). The odds were so stacked in the shark's favor you guys needed to try for maximum damage at the very beginning to knock the shark player off balance. The items should have all been used way before the boat was thoroughly destroyed (guns too). But I thoroughly enjoyed watching and yelling strategy at the human players, it was fun. LOL.

Re Rifle, it's Hooper's rifle, it was a part of the assorted gear he brought along. Just watched Jaws again last night, and there's a part where Quint uses the rifle to shoot at the shark and was having trouble firing it and under his breath he says something along the lines of "how do you use this thing, Hooper?"

Jason Lee's character, Brodie Bruce, in Mallrats was named after Chief Brodie & Bruce the shark in Jaws. Jeremy London's character, T.S. Quint, was named for the same reason. T.S. proposes to his girlfriend on the Jaws ride at Universal Studios in Orlando. Kevin Smith used Hooper in his next film, Chasing Amy. Hooper X, a militant Black Panther type for his comic book persona while secretly a gay man.

Next year will there will be a "Bigger Boat" expansion? I went into playing this very sceptical, but we really felt the game theme and mechanics were tight. When we flipped the board to the orca side and saw the health of the shark vs our weapons, we were like, yup, this isn't going to go well. The tension was real. In our game the flare did wonders and we just barely beat the shark. There just seemed, on the orca side of the board, no way but chance many times to know where the shark was going to attack. In that way, it felt a bit random in that we didn't feel connected to the results of our decisions as much as the first side. But that made our despair at our disappearing boat all the more intense. Will play it again for sure. Shark Attack Simulator.

In the first half of the game I don't think there's much of a reason for the shark not to play the long game. Why risk getting a barrel if there is no "time" pressure? Making this half of the game last a specific amount of rounds could probably fix that.
@boardgamegeek5 жыл бұрын
The risk is that the town players can get lucky since they can use their special objects (binoculars, fish finder) to cover large sections of the board, leading to them having okay odds of catching you no matter what you do, so you might as well bite a swimmer along the way. -WEM
@GrayP255 жыл бұрын
@@boardgamegeek Yeah, I suppose the impeccable play by Nikki hid that notion away from me. The town players can indeed cover large sections of the board and that's where the risk for the shark comes from. Thanks ;)
