We have the 65# M2 anchor from Mantus and are VERY happy with it. We originally purchased the M1 model, but it turned out that it would not fit easily on our bow roller and would have required some major modifications. The M2 fits perfectly on our existing bow roller. Also, the customer service at Mantus was some of the best I've experienced.

Put a 65lb on ours which is the recommended storm size for Turtle Chaser. Went with the S2 swivel and the new v2 snubber claw. We also painted the entire anchor bright yellow. Easier to see from the surface in blue water.

I'm erring towards Mantus, also to replace a CQR that's just OK & I want better than OK. It won't be anything like the size of that monster though, that should keep you safe for sure. Fair winds to you from Rona Bowman...

After watching, reading and researching for anchors quite some time, I would make the same choice. A Mantus 1-2 step bigger than recommended.

I cruise on a 46 Grand Banks. In 2001 I cruised the great lakes and I trouble with my CQR on Grassy bottoms. When I researched anchors I came up with the bullwagga. I spoke to the designer who told me which size to get and made me this verbal promise "go cruise with it for the season, if you drag once I will buy it back". The first time I deployed it was in a nasty gale in Fernandina FL. The anchor hit the bottom with barely more than a 1:1 scope of chain rode and I thought it was going to rip the windlass off the deck. After 19 years of cruising with the Bullwagga I have NEVER dragged anchor.

I just received my 30kg/66 pound Mantus with swivel, bridle, etc. on my 1992 50 foot Riva motoryacht. My very expensive SS Riva (Danforth style) anchor (also 30 kg) got slightly bent in rock, and I have a friend pressing it back into shape. I'll just store it and use the Mantus instead. The 65 pound Mantus, according to Westmarine, weighs 73 pounds, which was a problem for me as I am with the military overseas and the APO only takes boxes up to 70 pounds. The guys at Mantus took care of it and said they would send it out in separate boxes to make the weight. Westmarine will not do that. I haven't weighed it, but I can just say it set instantaneously on the first drop with very little chain out. The wind pushed the boat back a bit, and the boat just stopped. I then let out about 20 meters of 3/8" chain. I only idled back in reverse, and the boat fully set, didn't move at all. So we dove down (I'm a technical dive instructor, and we were diving anyway,) and the anchor was buried deep up to the roll bar! The Riva anchor is great, a beauty, and it usually set, but it sometimes needed some help. This Mantus needs nothing. Nothing short of amazing. I also have their dinghy anchor, and the same, it sets immediately.

I agree, it's great gear. We are anchored now and expecting 20-30 for the next few days. Not really concerned. I'd be interested to hear what it actually weighs. I'm sure some of the extra weight west is quoting is the wooden box in ships in.

Emily & Clark's Adventure I agree. It’s probably closer to 68 pounds, but the way it sets, it’s the equivalent of a much heavier older style anchor. I think it’s even better than a Rocna. I used a 25 kg Fortress for a while after the Riva bent, and we dragged quite a bit. I needed a lot of chain to hold position. With the Mantus, 2:1 was plenty in calm waters. Sleep well :)

Good video just gotta wonder about the anchor s weak points which would be the bolts a Rocna is completly welded but mantus is bolted togther so if a bolt snapped that would leave the anchor losses holding power
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 4 жыл бұрын
Everyone makes their choices I have no problem with the bolts. Biggest problem with the mantis is that it tends to snag chain on it's side flanges if you don't set it right. But one should never bury the hook in a pile of chain.

@@EmilyAndClark the rocna was designed by a kiwi world sailor Pete Smith back in the 1990's due to wanting a better anchor, many have copy but rocna is still the best as the copies had to have small changes to avoid copy right laws. happy new year

Way too funny...we seem to have the same tastes. Millennial and baby boomer relationship, Mantus 85 lb anchor and probably same size boats. Mine is a Freya 39. BTW that Mantus is like anchoring to a reef. It's unmovable and sets instantly. Unbelievable holding power. But change your swivel. Use the Mantus one. P M me and I'll give you the explanation. It's too long to post here. Another great video. If you come to the Pacific side we may meet somewhere. I'm On my way to Mexico currently.

I've had my double articulated swivel for over 20 years. I like the mantis offering but it would take a lot to talk me out of mine. What I need is a new chain.hook. Mantis has a nice one. They have a lot of nice products.

Emily & Clark's Adventure ti works too well on rocks. I fear I may lose the anchor. When I'm on a rocky bottom I add an extra line to the front hole or the roll bar with a float so I can retrieve the anchor of anything goes wrong. That Mantus dogs in so dam hard that sometimes mud can be a scary retrieval.
@Jmmondeau
@Jmmondeau 4 жыл бұрын
Emily & Clark's Adventure I understand your love of the articulated swivel but Mantus is a different beast. Your swivel will twist and kink and the tremendous loads to unstick a Mantus will break the swivel when you least expect it at the shank of the anchor. After I damaged one swivel and almost trashed my second swivel (and I own three Mantus's) They all acted same. With the Mantus swivel the problem never returned. I found that the problem was developing when I was at anchor and the boat would swing around the anchor with the current change etc. I hope I can convince you. Their swivels are as much a game changer as their anchors. PM me and we'll talk about it.

Are you sure, that's what you want? Put the anchor swirl directly on the anchor? And by the way. Congratulations on your mantus.

This is a double articulated swivel. It works directly connected to the anchor great. I've been using this one since the 90s with no issues. I'm not a fan of stainless underwater but this one is proven.

Emily & Clark's Adventure use the Mantus swivel. It's impossible to bind and create a side pull on the swivel when there's a wrap up on the chain. It swivels at the opposite end ( the anchor shaft side).

@@EmilyAndClark The other way to go is no swivel.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 4 жыл бұрын
There is often nothing wrong with no swivel but in the Bahamas the current can wrap things up in a few days and twisted chain is weak. I'd use the mantas swivel in a second except the one I have is still good and I don't want to spend the money. If they offer me one I'll gladly use it and switch out mine. I think it's gear that can be trusted. I'm also really glad they offer a devil's claw. Mine is getting really Rusty and they are hard to find in 3/8".

Hello, as a charter skipper I almost always have to deal with these CQR anchors on charter vessels. Does anyone have a tip on how to anchor with CQR anchors? Most of the time I need more than 5-7 tries until the CQR more or less holds, on sand.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 3 жыл бұрын
Don't expect it to set immediately. Ease it into the bottom before hitting it hard with engine power.
@ushi120
@ushi120 3 жыл бұрын
@@EmilyAndClark Thanks for the answer. I guess it is difficult to dig the anchor into the sand when the anchor is already on its side and then slowly start pulling backwards with the engine. Sometimes I tie plastic bottles to the crossbar so that the anchor dives vertically and digs in. But this does not always help, it depends on the depth of the water. Sometimes it also helps to slowly reverse while lowering the anchor. The plug aligns itself through the current and the anchor can also be buried vertically. I often have to stop anchoring and look for a new anchorage, which is annoying. I can not stand this CQR and do not trust him ;-) Regards ah Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

The noise was too great to hear what chain you like and which one corroded right away. Can you repeat that for me here. I am about to purchase our chain and don't want to waste our time and money. Thanks! On repeated listening I think you said that Chinese chain was the one that corroded? I still can't make out which chain you like.

Sure Mark. The chain I bought was ACCO chain from peerless. The Chinese stuff I don't remember but they keep changing names anyway. Campbell makes good chain as well and I've heard good things about Italian chain and almost bought that but had a hard time finding my size in stock locally. PS. I got a good price from defender marine. Even with shipping it was reasonable.
