When the flames get low and erratic on a gas stove it's usually a blocked jet. Our oven is going slow on Fair Isle so it's time to take the jets out to clean them.
P.S. We will be adding lots of tips on anything to do with sailing on our new website. There's a 'Tips and Tricks' page and a technical page for all the geeky stuff. Or you can just watch the pretty pictures and follow our sailing journey.

Gotta love those 10 minute jobs - especially when they actually are only 10 minutes 😆

Wow....Once again I am the first to comment! Thanks for the tip. Sometimes it can also be the "thermocouple" which will not allow the gas to flow once the flame ignites. This was obviously not the problem in your case. Sorry for being mean spirited with your brass cleaning video. The info and demo was good. In Australia we have "Autosol" metal cleaner available in automotive shops. It works well too. Cheer,Rob (From Tasmania)

Yes you're right thermocouples are probably the second most likely thing to fail. At least it's obvious as the gas will flow fine while you're still holding down the knob and only go out when you release it. We do have Autosol too, I use it for stainless.

Just a thought but in the UK I am lead to believe that your insurance coverage may be at risk if your boat does not have a "Gas Certificate by a competent (Gas Safe registered) engineer". I expect removal of the oven would nullify the test certificate but I stand to be corrected.

That might apply in Australia I think, but I never heard of any such restrictions in the UK & it's certainly not mentioned in the insurance. It is good to double check these thing though, another sailing channel has just had an estimated $100,000 of damage and apparently the insurance wont pay. Sailing in an unspecified area.

@@svfairisle Not a legal requirement in the UK but as you note Insurers will use just about any excuse not to pay. You may be interested in a reference to this subject in PBO - 2015 issue www.pbo.co.uk/expert-advice/check-your-boats-gas-system-19785

Hello, I was wondering if you could expand of this. I've been cleaning our old but new to us force 10 stove and I think I'm being a bit stupid, but I can't seem to take the burner off! I've unscrewed it, but don't know how much force to use to pull it off- and I certainly don't want to break it! Any advice would be wonderful. (google is utterly unhelpful) Thank you.

Well that's odd! The burner top just lifts off and then there's one little phillips screw to undo and you should be able to lift the burner out completely.

@@svfairisle thank you - I will use a bit more force then!! I have a feeling, judging by the huge build up of dirt on the stove, that they have never been taken out so are probably held in by 20 years of grime.

It probably is just that, there's really no reason (apart from ease of cleaning) to take the burner tray out so it's probably never been out. You can access the jet with a small socket to get that out for cleaning so if you can manage to clean the tray in situ then I would just do that.

@@svfairisle oh perfect thank you so much for your advice. Its so hard with a new and crusty oven to work out which bits should come out with a bit of work and which should stay. I can definitely clean them insitu. I just hope that the oven one is a bit easier as that is the one that is struggling to work!

@@svfairisle btw I love you technical corner, it is so straightforward and informative. Our new boat has quite a bit of wood inside so I will be re-watching your varnishing episode shortly!! (and getting my husband to watch the winch episode...... that will be his job!)

Thanks for that! We were almost beaten down $800 on our boat asking price because the oven wouldn't get up to temperature. I stood firm on that, but could have fixed it if I had known. Even the gas fitter had no answer except for the new stove he could sell us.

Apparently a common cause of the oven not burning on high is a spiders nest inside burner after winter lay-up.
