Oil the handrails again, there are more than one reasons why they wore oiled than that it is easier. This safety device gives a better grip for your hand if it is oiled than if it is varnished. 🇸🇪💕😄😀

if you want to save taping time (TONS) pace a square of quality wax paper under the joint as you screw in the handrails. you can tighten them down lightly -then varnish scuff recoat to your hearts content. Then once you're ready to put fully assembled coats or? you just loosen the screws a bit grab the paper with two hands, pull on it and you can tighten it up as far as you want, no mess no fuss. I've seen and used this technique after learning it from high end wooden house finishing gurus. This technique works even better when installing door / window etc trim , line the edge with wax paper when installing the trim / frame use blue painters tape to keep the paper positioned then you can even use a razor blade to cut it off without loosening the trim...saves tons of time
@CAPTJohn4710 ай бұрын
How does that work with bunged screws? Seriously??
@soloroy602010 ай бұрын
@CAPTJohn47 not at all. Just to answer your question 😅😅
@SteelDoesMyWill10 ай бұрын
@@soloroy6020 actually it does... Handrails (in new construction and some restorations) are often varnished off the boat, installed later. So its not unusual that the bungs are installed, trimmed, planed flush, and then spot varnished on a mostly finished handrail. Pro-tip, you don't use glue, use varnish as glue when you put them in.
@drewmart810 ай бұрын
Just did my handrails last year, and this is exactly what I did - did all coats off the boat, installed, bunged, then did same layers of touch up over the sanded bungs. Worked out great. Neat trick with waxed paper! But yeah wouldn't work once you have bugs in (unless you cut it with razor blade).

Hello, I just found out about Sailing Magic Carpet from a patron. You do make very high quality videos with lovely musical accompaniment. We own a Bristol Channel Cutter 28, in fact the one that you showed the bronze number plate of on the Cape George boatyard video! I saw the plate, and asked my wife "Aren't we number 96?" The corrosion looks familiar, just like ours! Such a small world. We plan on repainting our mast this spring. The Epifanes roll on paint looks really good and our yard owner recommended we use it. Prep is everything.

Such beautiful work. I’m sure you’ve completed varnishing the hand rails but, if not, Aladino may want to loosen them, place short spacers at the rail interface. Maya could then do a simple masking, followed by varnish, drying, spacer removal and snugging up the handrails to the trim.

I have a question regarding the winch bases - Since they are basically a bridge between the bulwarks (foam) and the coaming (wood) the portion of the forward thrust to the boat that is delivered by the jib sheets is applied to those items only. Are the bulwarks and coaming attached to the deck adequately to safely transfer that force under all conditions? Your craftsmanship and patience with odious tasks like sanding for days on end never cease to amaze me!

My dads old boat the hand rails where all bolted on through the wood with captive bolts epoxed in, It made getting them on and off really easy if fiddly and made varnishing them really simple too. The were external handles so they were varnished ridiculously often, prior to uv proof varnishes. I hated the job growing up.

White is a very tiring colour on the decks, a light grey mitigates the dazzle, in sunny climes. Do the x coats of varnish then fit, plug and sand then coat just the top surface of the rails, a couple of times.

The handrails will look great, not a problem at all to varnish them while they're installed. It might be even easier, since you don't need to think of a solution to fix them in place on a workbench.

I sail a Rustler 36. There are times down wind in bad weather when a combing across the back of the cockpit stops the slop wave from completely filing the cockpit. There are other times when the cockpit fills anyway. That happens to boats with little stern overhang.

really coming together…about that combing and scupper …im thinking that the area aft of the last scupper could be an enclosed storage nook for small deck tools…winch handles etc…can have a closed top with open access through combing into cockpit…would need a small drain hole that most likely could drain forward…that space as it is now appears to be an odd shaped place that would collect dirt and such and would drive me crazy..i am pretty sure aledino would notice this too…small details, but hopefully useful…cheers!
