We love the xb8000, especially the anchor watch app- do you use that? We love that it tracks the boats GPS so we have a history of where the boat has been while at anchor.... makes deciding if the boat has drug anchor much easier. We like the manual pumps... less to break, doesnt consume battery power, etc. What we would REALLY like is hot water, but doesnt look like that's going to happen anytime soon... I suppose we'll just have to go to warmer waters!

I had an Alberg 37 ketch. A beautiful boat with really nice sailing characteristics on the Texas coast. It might have been a little stuffy at anchor on a summer night at anchor in a bay. But, I made devices to send that sea breeze below. My wife & i took some friends from the marina out for an overnight offshore sail. We left in the early morning hours. As we cleared the channel I pointed Paraja onto a loose/tight reach to to south, set the wind vane & marked pososition on the chart.& noted GPS position on the console & LORAN (Yeah. I still had one. Back-ups are a blessing.) Then I sent Roger below to make the women were okay, They were still sleeping. Once I knew she, the boat, was running good I went below & made breakfast, oatmeal with raisins, butter & brown sugar. Noted position on the chart, GPS, LORAN & dead reckoning. Took depth off the fish finder & noted wind speed & relative direction hull speed. We stopped in the afternoon. I hove her to, threw poly ropes over & we all took a swim in 200 fathoms of blue water. A tiny fresh water rinse & that was our bath for the day. Into the night we rolled southward. I reduced sail & set a timer. Wife joined me in the cockpit & Roger. & Gail went to the fore deck. I set the timer & woke every 30 minutes. A look around. Every hour I made notes in the log & our position on the chart. At around 4am Roger & Gail came aft. Gail went below & wife went down to too. [We had the pilot berth model.) At sunrise we turned her back onto a broad reach & I reset the windvane. We were headed home and the trades were freshening. I'd raised the main in early morning. But now she felt "preesed" & the vane was struggling. We reefed the main & rolled in some jib to balance the boat. At noon, in that broad reach we're getting close to home port. Roger & Gail are sitting on the "highside." He has his arm around her & they're both smiling. Darling is sitting in front of me with her legs slightly spread & I'm pretty sure she has "oh baby" panties on under those shorts. Roger & Gail have a Hunter 40 something. Roger says "She's so smooth. She always tells you what she's going to do, even when you're down below and can't see the wave coming she doesn't make a sharp movement. She just accepts the the wave & rides it like it part of her. I'm watch you on the helm. You're olding steady. Slight adjustments, but nothing drastic. Same with the vane earlier. The balance is easily found & the boat almost sail itself" That's a Carl Alberg design. He didn't bdesign "great" boats. But, he did design "good" boats with great capabilities.

Just discovered your videos and really enjoy them, thank you! You appear prepared for extensive, self-sufficient cruising. We recently returned from many years off-shore, and downsized to a 1983 C&C 37 for BC coastal cruising. Gear I find super useful, and suggest for your consideration: foot pumps for water at sinks. At the galley sink I have one foot pump for sea water (pre-wash dishes etc) and one for fresh water (so great to have both hands free).

Thanks for your comment and suggestions! Since this video was published we made upgrades to Maya- we have a fresh water foot pump and we added an electric pump for sea water- that feeds a facet in the galley and VERY IMPORTANT forward deck wash.... so nice to have that to spray the mud off the anchor rode.... not to mention the forward deck where Disco does her business. Appreciate your comment and you watching. We love BC and hope to cruise there again someday! Cheers!

Maya, as I mentioned I talked with Peter Smith, Since he holds the patent on Rocna anchors, I consider him an ‘expert’. He advised me to not use any swivel on the rode, instead just use the biggest ‘good quality’ shackle you could get to fit thru the chain link. And use a galvanized shackle rather then a Stainless Steel shackle, because Stainless is a weaker metal.

Hi, I live just below Prince Rupert and totally love the beauty of BC's coast and plan to buy a sailboat soon. I can't help but notice that you seem to run a lot on your engine instead of sail. What can you tell me about the feasibility of using wind for propulsion on coastal BC waters? If I didn't want to sail in white-caps would I be on engine power most of the time? I like the practicality of your video, thanks for sharing everything, Donald.
@CruisingMaya3 жыл бұрын
Hello Donald! You live in a very beautiful place! You can definitely sail in the coastal waters of BC. We didn't sail at all during our passage through BC due to a damaged forestay, but if it was working we would have been able to sail some. We tend to motor quite a bit due to the long distances we travel, but we would definitely sail more if we were going 15-20 miles/day. At this point in the trip we were averaging 40+miles/day. There were plenty of non-whitecap, decent sailing days. Bottomline... you should get that boat 😀. Thanks for watching and following along- we appreciate it!

@@CruisingMaya Yes, the coast of BC is insanely beautiful. I used to work on tug boats when I first saw it. Okay, so lots of wind then. Sadly I had to look up forestay. I like the look and form of this boat, especially the comfort and capsize ratio as coastal BC can get rough and likely is not too fin keel friendly. Thank you and cheers to Cruising Maya!

@@andrewoneill5003 We are so lucky to have landed Maya! The previous owner did so much for this boat: new engine, new mast, new rigging, new stove/oven, new electronics, put in a composting head, and converted the holding tank to additional fuel storage, new jib sail, the list goes on. We NEVER would have been able to afford to all of those things.... let alone a new engine! We've done a lot of work to the boat to keep her going and have some other big upgrades coming in the future. Is running the engine your only option to charge your four batteries? I didn’t see any solar panels or wind generator on the deck. Is this because you are in the Pacific Northwest? If you have to charge the batteries by running the engine have you considered installing a larger alternator? Otherwise, looks like a very comfortable boat!

@CruisingMaya4 жыл бұрын
Oh interesting.... Does he recommend just a straight shackle between the chain and the anchor?
@edwardfinn41414 жыл бұрын
An Alberg 37 is a quality offshore boat, heavily built, full keel, protected rudder, good sail area to weight ratio, and you got a great looking engine there. I commented elsewhere about your fuel filter, I see that you do have a racor filter bolted to the side of the bulkhead near the engine. Thats good. Take your time cruise the west coast, dont be in a hurry to cross an ocean, but the boat can certainly handle it. If you are gonna live on the boat in the PNW, year round, then I would consider changing the solid fuel stove to a diesel burner... The ocean is much colder then the adjacent land, and a diesel stove uses very little fuel; Most of the work to convert over is already done.... Good luck, you can do it!
@CruisingMaya4 жыл бұрын
@@edwardfinn4141 Looking back, I should have installed a diesel heater. The solid fuel heater just doesn't make sense for living on a boat through a PNW. Way too much work, and the fuel takes up way too much space. During the winters we only use the solid fuel heater when we REALLY need it- typically when temps are around 20 degrees. Otherwise, we get by with a small space heater. Hindsight is 20/20- should have gone with a diesel heater....
