If we can do it, then anyone can! I think the key is to have plenty of time, and don't be in a rush. We waited out a lot of storms on the west side... would not have wanted to be out traveling during those blows.

Last year when we rounded cape sutil the swells started to build to 10 feet then our engine decided to call it quits. After getting covered in diesel and just about to make a mayday call to the coast guard I got the engine running and made it to sea otter cove. We left port McNeil early in the am and entered a very shallow and narrow entrance in the dark to sea otter cove. Finally anchored and got to sleep when the anchor drug. What a day ! But calm seas don’t make good sailors lol

If your engine fails in heavy seas there is a high probability that it is dirty fuel getting stirred up that otherwise sits at the bottom. Happened to me four or five times before I realized what the cause was. Now I: (i) always pour new fuel through a Baja filter before it comes on board; (ii) add biocide with every fueling; (iii) polish the fuel tanks once or twice a year (ie pump both tanks dry, making sure I get everything off the bottom of the tank before then filtering it twice. We now have not had a fuel related engine problem in five years, so so far, so good.

@@CruisingMaya nope small community north of Victoria on the west side. I wish I was able to travel the island when I was there though. Given my love for the outdoors I wish I did live further north on the Island like Port Mc Neill. Miss the smell of the Ocean and cedar trees. Not sure if you have watched or heard of the TV show Alone on History Channel but where you are in Winter harbour is probably close to where they had filmed a season. One fond memory of growing up there was a 3 day canoe journey in a 30 person long canoe that the natives had. We had set out from Jordan River and paddled to the exposed to the ocean side of East Sooke.

@Cruising Maya it was a great adventure, with my fellow students from the high school. Even swam in the ocean with seals (the privately kept native nickname Swims with Seals given by a local native elder) native fresh smoked salmon (freshly caught). If you are ever on the Victoria harbour, in the summer there is an fish and chips shop right on the docks where locals can sit and eat and down the docks where they sell fish one can buy fish (smelts or herrings) and feed them to the seals right there. I do believe its still there ( 15 yrs ago ) its to the right when you come in the harbour just before you get to the US Ferries terminal. If it interests you, also there is old coastal bunkers on the Esquimalt side of the harbour where you can walk around the old coastal gun positions. If you go on Victoria Day, (May) Canada Day (July) or Remembrance Day (Nov 11) you will see and hear the Canadian Artillery perform the 21 gun salute around the inner harbour near the Empress Hotel. Plug your ears though or where ear protection, trust me (10 years of shooting them makes for a hearing loss) Not sure if this at all interest you.

Hi guys, enjoyed the Big Step !! Around the top. We keep our boat in Anacortes , and made it to the Broughton's last season. And plan to spend more time In Broughton world. Starting in May. One of the (get ready preseason) checklist is a good look at that stuff. I'm on the hard now so a good time for that I'm thinking. We didn't have much wind at all on this trip, and when we did we're usually at anchor waiting for a better weather window to travel in. When the wind blew it REALLY blew- especially on the West Coast.

Lovely lovely cruising. You two are so blessed. A quick question though for a IT-challenged me... how hoisting your handphone helps even if reception is good atop the mast but you cannot reach the keystrokes on it to get the maps? Was it wifi or wired to a laptop in the cabin?

So, how that cell-phone-up-the-mast thing worked was, when we just BARELY had service, we hit the "download maps" button- then quickly raised the cell phone to better coverage in order to get those maps. It was a good work around for a major mistake of not checking our chartplotter's maps!

Congrats..but kinda a gamble not worth taking to me...what if that storm kicked in much harder under half way through? Its really one of the easiest ways to get into trouble: trying to beat weather instead of waiting for it....then again I know much more goes into decision than can be mentioned in a short video that influences skippers calls.
