Boat details:
Plastilupi Half Cast 30, Built 1989
LOA 9.00 m (30 ft)
LWL 7.80 m (26 ft)
Beam: 3.06 m (10 ft)
Draft: 1.70 m (5 ft 7 inches)
Displacement: 3000 kg (6600 lbs)
Ballast: 1400 kg (3086 lbs)
Ballast ratio: 46.66 %
Sail area: 60 m2 (645 sq ft)
Keel type: Integral (Encapsulated, lead filled)
Mast: Deck Stepped
Cabin headroom: 1.85 m (6ft 1 inches)
The Plastilupi Half Cast 30 was designed by Davide Castiglioni for the Half Ton Cup of Trieste. They therefore have the great sailing performance of a 'half tonner', combined with a cleverly maximised, comfortable interior to suit the needs of a small cruising family.
The boat was produced commercially by Giuseppe Loggia, who fell in love with the design and left his job in the marine services industry to produce the Half Cast 30 commercially. It was produced and sold in Italy.
The Half Cast 30 is a medium displacement fibreglass constructed boat withan encapsulated keel (after being laid up as an integral part of the hull, it was then filled with lead). This makes for a solid hull and eliminates the need for keel bolts.

Lovely boat! I spent 8 years living aboard a very similarly laid out 30 footer, though mirror-imaged Port-Starboard. You have made it into a very attractive live-aboard, very tastefully and practically set up, the solar power generation being particularly useful. For a boat of this size, I think the tiller is much to be desired over a wheel, especially if you don't have a crowd in the cockpit underway. Do you have a GPS chart plotter? I lived aboard before GPS was a big thing (remember LORAN?). but in subsequent sailing I found a chart plotter to be a huge help (not a little hand-held, but a properly installed one, with AIS). An auto-pilot connected to the plotter would also be most helpful, if not essential, in a short-handed situation. A tiller auto-pilot is compact and easily stored when not in use. Such subsystems are relatively affordable these days. Another point: the anchor locker hatch cover should have a latch, so that in the event of a knock-down or big waves crashing over the bow, you won't lose all that beautifully arranged and vital kit. I presume that your cockpit locker hatch covers have watertight seals and are also locked down. (You may want to look at Laura Dekker's 8-part video series on single-handed circumnavigation on a somewhat bigger, but similarly simple boat. Many useful pointers by a master sailor).

Hi Gays. I note that you say you only have a main and a roller headsail, I think it may be a good idea to consider a Genaca it's a cross between a genoa and a spinnaker, they are very easy to handle and you don't need a heavy spinnaker pole and sheets, but the increase in speed in light airs is well worth it ...

Absolutely gorgeous vessel, I stumbled across your channel by accident, like what I saw and am now a new subscriber, oh by the way I am a big fan of sail drive. Although our boat has conventional shaft and propeller drive. She is a 1963 alberg 30 and we have sailed from our home port of Santa Cruz California to the Hawaiian islands 3 times and 3 times to the sea of Cortez. The nice thing about a 30 footer is I can put her on a trailer and store her at my home. She is under refit now and when I officially retire next April we are going to trailer her to Florida next summer and begin our circumnavigation from there. Just goes to show you a million dollar yacht is not needed to cruise the world. Many people have done it aboard even smaller boats. I wish you well and may Neptune treat you nicely !!!!!

Hi Bill, thank you very much for your kind comment and welcome to the crew! I just Googled the Alberg 30 and they look like gorgeous boats. No doubt you enjoy the advantages you gain from your long keel (which of course negates the possibility of a sail drive). I love the classic lines and of the Alberg and she looks like a very seaworthy design. You have had some wonderful adventures on your boat! Your Hawaii trips must have been amazing?! Being able to store your boat at home is a huge advantage... Your retirement plans sound truly inspirational. Please keep us updated as we'd love to know how your new life on board goes. :-) Fair winds, Chris (& Rossella) 👍

Hi George, thanks for your comment. Yes we love being able to sail our tender. You can go off exploring in it around all the little coves and bays that you wouldn't be able to get into with your boat. It's a homemade rig: I bought the aluminium tubes from ebay, made push-fit splices in them so that the mast and boom come apart (This was actually because the tubes were shorter than I wanted them to be [shipping restrictions] so I had to splice together two sections to get the length I wanted... I used an optimist rig as a starting point (I used info online to get the measurements) and then increased the mast height so that we can more easily get under the boom when tacking. It was cheap to make and lets us go sailing in the wee tender! Cheers, Chris (& Rossella) 👍

Lot's of storage. Seems like a very good layout for a small cruising boat. Kind of like a Catalina 30 in respect to a lot space in a small boat.
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 7 жыл бұрын
You're right, our boat does look pretty similar to a Catalina 30 in terms of size and layout. The Half Cast 30 was designed for the Half Ton cup of Trieste so she sails well, which is great because we have a lot to learn when it comes to getting that 'extra' knot when sailing her! One thing we really like about our boat is that the keel is moulded into the structural layup of the hull, with lead poured in afterwards. We like the solidity and longevity of this keel design. Cheers, Chris & Rossella :-)

@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jack, yes it's a 30 ft boat. Our engine has access from the cabin behind the companionway steps and from above via a removable cover in the cockpit, so it's not too bad but it would always be preferable to have even better access. Having said that, I used to be a technician on aircraft (fast jets and helicopters) - and what seems like restricted access on a boat would feel like luxury on an aircraft! Sometimes you have two arms through two small access panels, with your head squeezed up against the outside of the aircraft, working only by feel. Such fun! :-) Fair winds, Chris (& Rossella) 👍

There is a purpose for not having steps to climb up to the must and one of the biggest reasons is that your sail can get damaged usually it happens in the strong winds and in the situation when you really don't want anything happening, especially in the middle of some action.

In Denmark, marinas are not outwardly inviting people to live there. Is it possible to be anchored and maintain one's professional job while anchored? I.E. Rowing to shore, where the company car is parked and work 10 hours, then get back on the boat? Hmm. This is interesting to me. Great video. I really appreciate your fishing rod! Easy does it! :-)

We have our first baby on the way and want to be able to live on board for long periods... We have bought a bigger boat as we found a great deal that we couldn't refuse! We'll be refitting the new boat and plan on making a passage of over 1000 NM next year with our new 'Britalian' baby girl! I have a little tip for you here: instead of saying 'I can't afford that' start thinking 'How can I afford that?'... You will be amazed at what your mind is capable of if you start doing this and you could find yourself achieving your wildest dreams. I read this in a book a few years ago and it seems to be working for me! Best regards and fair winds, Chris (& Rossella) 👍

Nice boat and great tour. Do you do anything to prevent bending or damaging your roller furler when you use the hammock?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 7 жыл бұрын
Hi John, we haven't had any problems with our furling gear: neither of us are particularly heavy and, although we are 'point loading' it with our hammocks, it takes larger loads when we are sailing. If we were concerned about this I suppose we could place a brush handle under the hammock lines on the furler to distribute the loads over a larger area... Thanks for watching and commenting. Fair winds, Chris & Rossella 👍

Your videos are always enjoyable to watch. Could you please describe in detail your water systems?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Andrew. Very simple on this boat: a 120 litre flexible tank under the v-berth; a 12 volt pump which ran whenever a pressure drop was detected; an accumulator (to damp out pump pulsations and reduce cycling of the pump, as well as eliminating any 'water hammer' effect); a 230VAC boiler to make hot water whilst plugged in to shore power; and two faucets, plus a (cold only) cockpit shower. Easy peasy. When filling the water tank I would add a dash of bleach to keep everything bacteria-free. Cheers, Chris 👍

I'm sure you could always use more room, but all in all, it looks just right for two to be comfortable and very affordable. Has your Volvo been good to go? (I only ask because another v'logger mentioned they have kind of a bad reputation.)
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thank you for your comment. We love our boat and the memories we've made since we've owned her so far will last us a lifetime! I like the Volvo engine. It's very simple and easy to work on. The only issue we've ever had is that it developed blow-by on one of the injectors. The injectors are retained withing copper injector sleeves. Our engine developed pretty extreme blow by on one of the two cylinders, and exhaust gases were escaping straight up past the injector (despite this the engine got us home fine, runnning on one cylinder...) I removed the head to give me good access, 'milled' the injector sleeve seat, and then inserted two homemade copper washers... We didn't have the possibility to buy the washers locally and wanted the boat back ASAP! I cut two sections off the end of a copper pipe with a pipe cutter, hammered them in to the desired washer shape [repeatedly heating them cherry red with a blow torch then quenching them in water to anneal them when they started to work harden] and then fitted the washers into the bottom of the injector sleeve before re-assembling the head. It worked and we have no blow-by now! I will no doubt do the job 'properly' one day and replace the whole injector sleeve, but you need special tools to do this, and I hate spending money! No doubt we'll end up making a video about this at some point! There you go then, that's probably a more exhaustive answer than you were expecting. :-) Cheers, Chris (& Rossella) 👍

Looks great. Thanks for the link to the tender plans. How is she for provisioning?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Philippa, thank you! We love our little tender. We've had me, Rossella, and both Rossella's parents in the tender all together to go ashore when we were at anchor. My parents in law have zero boating experience and they were comfortable with the ride so I think that says something. :-) The boat only weighs around 25 kilos but is a very capable and versatile. It can be kept in a gap beside a wardrobe and a wall in a house and can be loaded on a roof rack (we once transported it inside our small car by tilting the passenger seat backwards , so that is yet another option with it) These boats, being so unique, get lots off attention, and as the 'builder' that makes you very proud! Fair winds! Chris (& Rossella) 😁

HI Santiago, thank you for watching and commenting. :-) Yes, we have a tiller pilot (If you watch the video again and look out for it you might see it - it's black and runs from the side of the cockpit to the tiller.) These tiller pilots are simple and relatively cheap but ours came with the boat, which was great for us. Fair winds! Chris & Rossella
