Minimum wake is very subjective and open for interpretation, AND varies substantially from boat to boat. In a court the police will have to prove that the speed was actually as high as the officers estimated, and the manatees were in real danger at that speed compared to 1 knot slower. It cannot be proven so the case has to be dismissed, and it would be dismissed already at the police attorneys desk.

If the 5 knots limit is there to protect the sea mammals present in the upper water column, then the most interesting speed is the speed through the water (STW). It the outgoing stream has a speed of 5 knots, it may be impossible to protect the mammals if returning home from the sea. If you are going out to the sea it could be a problem with the Police if they measure your speed (Speed Over Ground or SOG) from a stationary object, i.e. a bridge. Catch 22?

I have a safety checklist I go through anytime I am out on big water. Also do a thorough go through in the Spring before putting the boat in the water. I have found that with FWC and your local equivalent the friendlier you can be the better chance you have of getting a warning.

I got stopped last week by going 31 on a 25 zone! It was the most unfair ticket that I have gotten in my life! But the whole stop took about 7 to 10 minutes! All I did was say yes officer and I am sorry! The ticket was BS because I knew the speed limit there and I was doing 23mph on my gps but I did not get into a fight with the officer because the first thing he did was show me the gun with the 31mph on it so there was no point! That is $90 down the drain! But it was one of the best lessons that I could teach my kids that were with me on the boat! So it’s all good

give that special police Boater officer the same ticket that he or she just issued that Boater. for reckless endangerment of manatees in a protected area. I'm sure there were other officers in the area that are suited to handle what ever the problem was that they were speeding off to.in such a hurry.!

They are smarter than most humans so I suspect they are more likely to comply to the lights and sirens than most of the idiots I encounter daily. But being one person who likes animals more than most people, I do wish they would have driven slower. In my opinion, no call outweighed the potential risk to the manatee's.

General rule is if your Bow is up in these manatee zones u will be pulled over. I have a Formula and ya kinda have to keep speed up to 6-7 knots to have control. When I got pulled over I was very courteous he explained the Bow up scenario and let me go. Swallow your pride yes sir no sir generally it’s all it takes unless what u r doing is completely out of hand!
