When you put the impeller in the cup, you turned it clockwise, BUT, you turned it clockwise with the cup UPSIDE DOWN, This means, that when flipping the cup right side up to install, the impeller is the wrong way! When doing stuff like this, you have to think about proper orientation of the part when it’s installed. Luckily, in many cases, once the motor starts, the vanes will flip the right way, but if you’re going to make a hiw to video for DIYers, do it right.
@Adam-ox6zy6 ай бұрын
Yup I noticed that. The other video I watched of someone replacing the impeller on a similar Johnson outboard he turned the impeller anticlockwise to install. That’s what I’ll be doing on mine. Otherwise a great straight forward video.
@Adam-ox6zy6 ай бұрын
A nice straight forward video but I reckon the impeller should be installed anticlockwise from other videos of similar outboard I’ve seen. And the dude was following instructions that he had.

69 also didn’t have a plastic impeller housing. Used this as a reference on my 1974 and ran into a few snags.
@fleetwin14 жыл бұрын
These engines were originally equipped with an aluminum impeller housing....Those parts are available individually, but the "water pump kit" is the newer style with the plastic housing and SS liner. It is important to note that none of these parts are interchangeable. But, the newer style water pump kit will fit on engines back to the 50s.

I have a 1972 evinrude fisherman 6hp , it had the one big impeller orginally and the replacement one I received will not pump any water. I put a drill on the shaft and submerged the lower unit until the intake was completely covered. the impeller is going in the right direction and its put together just like this one. I think I will just order the impeller that was in it and put it back together.
@fleetwin14 жыл бұрын
Do the two impellers look the same? Be sure they didn't send you the impeller for the newer style kits which will not fit, the difference is very obvious. Or, perhaps it is the other way around, maybe someone installed the newer style kit previously, and you have ordered the original impeller which wont fit.
@Justin-tp3lr4 жыл бұрын
@@fleetwin1 My dad bought the motor new in 72'. the kit looks identical to the one in the video and works perfectly. When you order the kit it comes with the newer housing. Haven't you put the impeller into the cup incorrectly? My understanding is that it rotates clockwise when looking down onto it and the vanes are dragged round. By winding it into the cup in a clockwise manner when you turn the cup over and slide it down the drive shaft into position the vanes are curved the wrong way.
@jasonglabbe4 жыл бұрын

The cowl graphics look like 1970's vintage, not 1960's. Also 10mm bolts on a late 1960's/early1970's Johnson motor? I thought that they were made in USA. I would have expected 1/4" bolts taking a 7/16" wrench. 10mm is news to me

Sure wish frozen SS screws came out that easily for me! Be careful using those never seize products, you must use the proper formula that won't react with the aluminum..... Probably would have been a good idea to change the gear lube while the gearcase was off also, just in case there were leaks. This job is not as easy as it is portrayed here, and the missing driveshaft roll pin will render the lower crankshaft seal useless.... Probably would have been a good idea to pull that powerhead off to inspect/replace the seal components and replace/repair the shift handle.

Almost none of the videos for this procedure even mention that roll pin, or that, as you mentioned secures the lower crankshaft seal, (which is comprised of about 6 parts). I believe because no one mentions it, or shows the slot it goes into up inside the housing, it gets left out. In fact, if it is in place,my ou cannot slide the pump housing, or the old impeller up off the drive shaft. The only good video I’ve seen that actually explains that roll pin can be found by Googling -Johnson Evinrude 6 HP Lower Removal and Seal Explanation This link might work kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpbOoa2wj7iqfNk

Thanks for that. I think it's maybe a 1979, not 1969, but the differences should be covered when you look up your model/year for parts. The water pump is a different design than the original I noticed, and this unit doesn't seem to have the spring pin near the top of the drive shaft. Question: I had some difficulty with the shift adjustment after reassembly. I think I pulled the shift shaft connection and now can't engage forward. I think I need to slide the brass connector back up the shaft a little. Have you dealt with this (shift adjustment)?

Why does the parts change in the middle of the video? Also you forgot the driveshaft roll pin, also the gear shift shaft bolt needs to be removed all the way, not just loosening it.
@fleetwin14 жыл бұрын
Mr. Viceroy makes and excellent point. That missing roll pin is a most important part indeed. That roll pin holds the lower crankcase seal components up and in place next the powerhead....The lower crank seal won't work without the roll pin....Water intrusion into the crankcase is likely without the lower seal, which will lead to a slow but steady powerhead death. This is a common mistake that has terrible consequences.
