BOATS CAUGHT IN DANGEROUS WAVES AT CAPBRETON INLET | BOAT ZONE

Similar to the Haulover Inlet, the Passe du Boucarot in Capbreton, France, is famous for its heavy shore breaks and some extraordinary waves.
Off the coast of Capbreton is a deep and large canyon due to the movements of large tectonic plates between France and Spain. The sea floor rises quite fast towards the coast, which explains why the waves can be so traitorous at the inlet entrance. Given specific movements of the entering and retiring tides, along with strong currents due to the canyon, and accentuated by large surf coming to shore, the inlet can become quite risky.
The original access to the harbor was only developed in the 70s with the actual inlet built as we know it now.
Regarding the port of Capbreton, it is the only fishing port in the entire Landes department.
There are three types of fishing boats in that harbor: caseyeurs, fileteurs and chalutiers.
The "caseyeurs" are boats that live cages on the bottom of the ocean, like the lobstermen would do in Maine. The "fileteurs" let long fishing strings in the wake of the boat, such as casual fishermen would do. The "chalutiers" (fishing trawler) are much more destructive to the environment. Trawling is a method of fishing that involves actively dragging or pulling a trawl through the water behind one or more trawlers.

This video makes it jump to the eye the much better seaworthyness of sailing boats when compared with motor ones of the same size. Not everything is speed. I was once said that a good ship is that which safely carries her crew to the destination. ; -) Of course I'm a "sailing guy"

Enjoyed this content, BZ. 👍 Many of these sailboats are under motor assist entering and exiting the channel. Even the PETS have life vests on...Miami and Boco could learn a thing or two.😉 The only thing lacking are the credit card captains, and the self-absorbed twerkers here in the states! 🤣

Love seeing something new other than Haulover. This is not all that rough for a sailing vessel. Not the same as a center console. Love your notes. FYI There is a movie by Laura Dekker. She had to get permission from the Danish Government. It took her almost a year. She began her circumnavigation at 14.

When sailing normally (not over a bar with counter current and wind) these boats hit big, ten thousand pound waves, and smash them into spray and knife through them effortlessly, without spilling your long stem merlot glass... leaving no wake, just a few bubbles and whirlpools of wasted energy

8 interesting facts about sailing boatzone wasn't sure about lol. 5 to 8 knots of wind does not make it easy to sail, it is actually harder to make good speed as the sails need to be trimmed perfectly. Lots of monohulls exceed 9 knots and most medium sized boats sail best with winds between 10 and 18 knots and sail fast above that with sails reefed anywhere upto 25 knots. Anyway.. i do enjoy the video as you see the better captains with lifejackets and some sense.

Generally yes. But planing hulls and keels can be combined for sail-surfing in the open ocean. It can be safe, fast, and highly exhilarating under the right conditions.

Crossing any inlet can be difficult. The shallow water around the entrance\exit forces the waves to build and break. The great thing about a sailboat is the massive rudder gives you better control than a power boat when you’re surfing.

Sorry, the "crazy italian" isn't so crazy in did. The australian Serge Testa holds the world record for the circumnavigation in the smallest boat. His had 11-foot-10-inch, the Acrohc Australis. The jorney was describe in the book "500 Days: Around the World on a 12 Foot Yacht".

Most cruising sailboats are RCD cat A. Your weekend motor cruiser isn’t. Sail boats may not be fast, but until you have experienced a fully powered up sailing boat at 8-9 kts with a balanced trim, you haven’t lived.

You guys don't understand the difference between a V-hull and a displacement hull, do you. I'm actually shocked that someone didn't just sail by drinking a cup of coffee. The speed of a sailboat is limited to the theoretical speed design of the hull, fast racing boats have a very different hull design than a cruiser, too fast on a regular sailboat, it might just get sucked under the water, that's why "surfing" a sailboat down a wave can be so dangerous.

And by the way, we have a Cape Breton Island( technically not an island,it’s connected by a causeway now, but when I was a kid, you had to cross by ferry), where the famous “Cabot Trail” is located. The wise captain stows (or deploys) his fenders when he has plenty of time and space, and nothing else demanding attention. My fenders stay out until I'm miles out to sea and steady on a comfortable course, and on the way back they get deployed miles from the inlet. It doesn't hurt anything if they're out for an hour. Or three.
