No no no. The HCB didn't make a U-turn because the ride was too rough for them. They just wanted to check out how she would handle in hurricane conditions. And she did VERY WELL!!!

Those SPC-LE 33FT SAFE boats are absolutely amazing. I have been in some VERY questionable seas in one. Glad the boats won!!!!

They all win! The yachts were probably trying to get to a safer area, the center console turned around for safety (good call), the pilot had to go out and the Coast Guard has saved numerous people from mistakes. All win!

In conditions like that, unless you absolutely have to move your boat to safety, which you should have done beforehand, don't just don't be out.

Pilot boat is hampered by the need to have a flat fore deck for the pilots to embark/disembark easily.

Ship and big boats surfs waves all the time. I work on a 200 foot hopper dredge. On the west coast. We cross the bar a dozen plus times a day and don't stop when it gets a little ruff.

Actually you cannot judge a coast guard vessel. They are out there in the worst of the worst to save our butts in a bad time. Even if they lose they win in my opinion, because of that dedication for our safety and Welfare.

I keep asking this question. Does any know why owners don't move out of the way of a Hurricane knowing 5 to 10 days in advance location of the inevitable storm . I would have moved the boat to a location other then a direct hit.

Those pilot boat drivers are pros. They're not weekend warriors or showboat with too much money than brains. Thry have to side up tona tanker in high winds and rough water and safely disembark the pilot and retrieve the pilot later.

Self righting self bailing pilot boat with a displacement hull CAN NOT get up on plane!! You are seeing experts at work - water over the bow doesn't matter to hiin! No "win" for the inlet there! The only 2 ways the inlet beats that boat 1)force return due to high seas, and 2) rollover.
