As the person doing the repair, you will always see it, no matter how perfect a match. It somehow burns an image in your brain. You see stuff that isn't there.

Andy, you did an excellent video on gelcoat years ago (~5yrs). My sailboat repairs shined and were flawless! I even brought back a fiberglass garden tub by following your wet sand/compound instructions.

Thanks for the tips and tutorials. I’m getting ready to bring an old Bayliner Capri 1850 LS back to life . I think I’m looking at replacing the deck , will know once I start the teardown . Your tutorials have brought me up to date on fiberglass work from when I learned on PBR’s repair when I was in the Navy back in the mid 70’s .

Tricking the eye is key. I’m a professional so if I can barely see it when I’m done that’s a win. Glad Andy pointed that out in this video. At this point I can even do it with paint on cowlings. It is a bit tricky tho

Good info. I re-gelcoated a hatch on the rear of my boat. The color match was very good but I was not blending into any existing gelcoat. After about 5 years or so, this panel is a bit darker as the gelcoat matured. The boat is an off-white. If this is typical of gelcoat (which I am not sure), then I would say that if you have the new gelcaot off a hair, error on the light side. The other thing I heard when blending is to use a little of the clear gelcoat after the void is mostly filled in. Essentially add 1/3 of clear into the existing mixture and then add in more clear for the final coat. It makes the transition less noticeable.

Why wouldn’t you add thickener to the gelcoat to build the repair faster? Thanks for the video👍🏼

For nicks and dings like this, I use MarineRx after feathering the gouges out. In bright UV in tropical areas it might yellow a little, but here in Chicago, it's good enough. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough.

Hi Andy I'm going to be doing some of the exact same work and some impact damage work above the rub rail. Also holes from a bimini top and I want to repair the areas under the hand rail. The boat has non slip built into it with diamond shape niples so I can just do the best I can to preserve it when fixing some of the cracks. I'm going to paint the whole top side after right down to the rub rail and leave the rest of the hull alone for now. I have bottom work to repair first.

Hi Andy! I have a question. I have an old wooden boat that I want to restore. I think the work flow is as follows: remove all paint up to the wood, fill gaps with fiberglass putty, sanding, dust removal, polyester impregnation 430g/m2 glass fabric polyester and finally a top coat (wooden fishing boat) thank you. follow your works on your KZbin videos, you are an excellent person!!

Hi Andy, thanks for the helpful video and your pragmatic approach, as always. My question refers to the required prep work to be done on the spots with exposed fiberglass. Normally, the exposed glass acts like micro-pipes sucking the sea water, which evaporates then leaving salt inside the glass structure. Doesn't it affect further bonging of the new gelcoat layer if we only sand the spot with, say, 220 or 320 grid paper? Will the new gelcoat durable as bonded to the glass and salt background?

Regarding color matching....I found learning to mix anything beyond white, especially darker colors to be a long learning process. However, most of the bigger PRO marine fiberglass/paint suppliers in marine centers, like Fort Lauderdale, have spectrographic analyzers. Give or send them a chip, even a smaller one, and they will mix the gel coat or paint exactly for an old color after the 1500 sanding in my experience. I may have to break off a chip from an undamaged area to get the chip but I'm doing the area anyway. Just make sure it's from the same area: sun attacked or not-so-much. (If at a dock and not end-for-ending the boat periodically at the dock, one side will age more than the other) Usually I could pick the color-matched gel up the next day or mail it in and have it mailed if far away. Fast, reliable, cheap and accurate on top of saving me bags of time and the possibility of having to do the job over if not a close enough match. They also have all the materials you might need like PVA & MEK that your local marine store or auto paint supplier may not have. I used to buy storm damaged boats from insurers and zero-time them sail or power: new engines, all new upholstery, panels, radios and electronics, rewire, and either repaint or re-gel the entire hull if needed. Gave the original color brochures to the upholstery shops to work with. Very satisfying results.

Thanks for the informative video! Not sure if my question applies, I do need to fix quite a few nicks, but there is a complication: someone has applied a coat of paint on top of the factory gelcoat. Not sure what that paint was, but it is decomposing to the point that leaves my pants white whenever I seat on it. Clearly I would need to sand it out, but what strategy would you recommend for that? Like how to tell I am down to the original gelcoat without inflicting too much damage onto it? Thanks in advance!

I hope I am still.in time for you to see . My issue is not video worthy. But I have to replace the transom on my 68 glastron cv 16 basically the sister boat to leave jump boat in James bond. To my question. Should o go with plywood covered with fiberglass and thicken Resin? Or should I go with liquid transom.

I had my 1983 C&C landfall hull sand blasted below the waterline (cored) in the fall and noticed some spider cracks in the gelcoat on the starboard side. I’ve let it dry out over the winter. They are in 2 areas 1) where the jack-stands perhaps may have been placed over the years (just fore of the bulkhead - flexing), 2) above the keel on the hull stub (flexing), so to speak. Just my theory. How would you suggest going about fixing those? There are lots of videos above the waterline, but I could not find any “Andy next Level” videos really addressing below the waterline. I plan to barrier coat. I thought you might be interested in a video of this nature and I’d sure like to help. If interested, let me know here and I’ll be in touch.

I recently purchased a boat that needs some of these minor repairs but it's got a glitter coat that I'm sure I can't get. I would like to change the color of the boat to purple with gold flake from the current red and blue flake over a blue gel any input would be great. It's a 1996 ranger 361v

One thing - if I’m repairing the gelcoat on my boat, I don’t care if it matches - white boat = white gelcoat… if I pay someone for a repair, I better not be able to see it. I see it as a sign of the diy spirit -
