+1000 on using the Roll Additive. It really makes a big difference in the finished paint film.

Glad to see you seem to be doing so well with the shoulder. I didn't see you wince once. I started watching you about 5 years ago when I was rebuilding the transom on my 1972 16' Fabuglas. It turned out great with all your helpful tips in your videos but of course I was antsy and wanted it in the water ASAP, so I never painted over the gelcoat, as I need to paint the entire boat, and frankly I just didn't want to wait to get the boat in the water. the 50 year old gelcoat is actually still in great shape outside of 50 years of yellowing and the top cap being an awful faded Avacado green. Been planning on using the Alexseal every since you did your very first video with them, in fact I immediately started trying to get literature and color cards right after that first video of yours and frankly it was a little difficult, took about 3-4 months to actually get anything from them. I am sure the dealer network has matured since then and hopefully I will get it done this fall.

Hey Andy. Love your videos! Inspired by your original Alexseal vids and needing to paint my 30 foot sailboat, and having no experience I hauled it out and went to town! All I can say is Pandora's box was opened and what I thought would be a little effort turned big real quick. My existing paint was so bad I ended up having to use the build-up primer (3 coats), then the finish primer (3 coats) and lastly Infinity Blue topcoat (4 coats).....Since I'm a glutton for punishment I decided to long-board sand between each coat! Couple lessons: 1) the result is all in the prep work, don't rush it and long board to get it right (hope to never do it again! hahah) 2) Alexseal volume calculator recommended 2-3 quarts so I bought 1 gal given no experience 3) when you think you're putting it on too thin, go thinner! Depending on roller type I was getting 2 full applications per quart.....which left me a half gallon extra! But I know I'll have to do touch-ups. My boat looks fantastic and I'm a lesson of how well their rolling additive can work when you have no experience. Wish I could attach a photo!

Thanks Andy, I tried to get an answer from Tech Support at Alexseal and got confirmation of receipt but no follow through. However, you answered my question today. I started a project with Interlux Perfection and they discontinued it before I finished. So, I switched to Alexseal after watching your videos. I was not sure if the two were compatible but Perfection is a two part product and as you mentioned you can safely use that as a base. To be safe I am going to use the finish primer as a tie coat. Thanks again, Kirk

I have just completed a boot strip project on Pursuit 3000 Offhsre using alexseal 501 Super Jet Black. The project came out really good. Although, it could have came out prefect had a little more information or/and experience. The paint is real amazing stuff but must be applied very thin otherwise it will drip. Alexseal could have explain the mixture, re-coat process better as well. In my particular situation i feel the accelerator might have helped especial with the late night rain but i was affraid to use it. 2 ozPart 501, 1oz Part Converter, 1% of total volume of Reducer, Roller Addictive percentage was not clearly listed so use 1/4 of cap full. Saturday - 3pm Place tape to outline the boot stripe. Sunday - 1st coat was at 11am,(80 degrees partly sunny), Applied second coat at 7pm (70 degrees partly sunny) on top with no sanding, ( rolled with 3" purdy mohair roller) Sunday - 11:45pm lite rain, some water spots but paint was ok for the most part. Monday - Sanded at 3pm (80 degrees partly sunny), applied third coat at 5pm ( rolled with 3" purdy mohair roller) Monday - 11:45pm removed tape - Hopefully paint does not run but, i was nervous tape would not come off or would cause the paint to chip if i let the tape sit too long as Tape has on been on since Saturday, 24hr since second coat, 6hr since third coat. I will find out tomorrow whether the i removed the tape too early. Learned - The roller could not get close to through hole fittings so, i first used a brush which dipped. Later I learn to just use a sponge brush a just slightly dab the sponge on areas that need paint which the roller can not reach. The sponge needs little to no paint on it. This method worked good. Learned - It seems you can leave the tape on between coats. I will find out tomorrow whether the i removed the tape too early. Thanks for your help!

Hey there, Andy, great video as usual! I have a question regarding the primer and its coats. On my sailboat (Merit 22), some hairline cracks have formed due to age, wear-n-tear, and so on. I am curious as to whether the primer you mentioned, the 442 Finishing Primer, would actually fill these small cracks. I am planning on doing two coats of primer. Thanks again for the video! Cheers from Florida!

Hey Andy question. With the roller additive being 1% If I’m mixing up a 16ounce batch what is the 1% in volume that I’d add. Also do I only use the roller additive on the finish coat or the primer as well. 3:54

Hi Andy, in this video you say that it’s the same reducer in the epoxy as the paint, I’m pretty sure there are dedicated epoxy reducers and paint reducers
@boatworkstodayАй бұрын
With Alexseal, the same reducer is used for both the 442 primer as well as the 501 paint when rolling. It can be different with some of their different primers or when spraying :-)
@danielcollins3815Ай бұрын
@ ah well I always spray it, and use the acrylic x witch I use a blend of medium and slow reducer , but for the epoxy by spray application I have a reducer that’s labled as epoxy primer reducer. Amazing paint tho and I have watched all your alexseal related videos and more. Thanks for the great viewing

My boat has old awlgrip polyurethane that's in satisfactory condition. I've got epifanes polyurethane to go over it. I'm wondering if these paints are compatible? I don't have the money to prime over the old awlgrip.

I want to paint my 20' skiff that is stored on a trailer. Is 501 the appropriate product for the bottom?
@markgallagher13768 ай бұрын
Andy do you know if you can use Alexseal top coat below the water line if the boat will be in salt water continuously for less than 5 days at a time?
@boatworkstoday8 ай бұрын
Really not a good idea :-/ Pretty much guarantee it's gonna blister after that long. Traditional bottom paint a much better option and a lot easier to maintain :-)
@markgallagher13768 ай бұрын
@@boatworkstoday I should have mentioned this is epoxy and fiberglass over plywood boat. Not a polyester boat. Not sure if that makes a difference.

@@boatworkstoday This is common question. I have painted some resin based exhaust tips with 501 and they are going to partial submerged for the season, Can we create a forum so, i can share the results.

Hi Andy, the myth… paint will stick without primer, and paint and primer mixed works. Biggest joke in the painters world.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ All paint applied to ANY surface must have a least one primer coat or… The best example I can think of are garage door jams at the base. I see them every day, paint peeled because the jam wasn’t primed and then painted. Not with that primer paint mixed BS they sell customers at the stores. Ask any Sherwin-Williams employee. Thanks for this video
