That is what was great about Bob Barker. Whenever something like this happened, whether it was his fault, a model's fault, or a prop fell over or something, if there was a chance that the contestant COULD have seen it, Bob always made absolutely sure they knew what other people saw and understood what it meant and steered them toward picking the winning item. If this guy had said he wanted to match the bread, Bob would have said "Now wait a minute..." and explained it to him as thoroughly as he could without coming right out and saying "I already told you the raisins were the match for the chili." But he would come as close to saying that as he could without saying it. Similarly, had he said he wanted to match the chili and tried to pick something other than the raisins, he made sure the contestant knew they were picking the wrong one and might even say "Now...listen to the audience...they KNOW what one you should pick." and of course, the audience would all be screaming "RAISINS!" I have seen a few contestants who DIDN'T follow what was going to and did try to still pick a random item that was obviously wrong. And I can't remember a single time where Bob didn't successfully make them change their guess to the correct one. The prizes cost the show almost nothing. In some cases, literally nothing if it is small enough and the manufacturer felt it was worth the publicity to give the whole prize outright. So they didn't care if contestants won. They loved episodes where all 6 contestants won. Great publicity and helps the ratings. The revenue from higher ratings far exceeded the extra payouts for more contestant wins. That's why even when they had their famous "exact bid" during Drew Carey's first season, they weren't concerned with paying out the wins. They were concerned that there would be a scandal if it turned out someone gave the contestant the price in advance.
@markscheuer86482 жыл бұрын
If course, giving away the trip was a win for everyone. The hotel got the advertising, CBS and the show got a LOT of good will, the contestant got a nice trip and the U.S. Treasury got a nice tax windfall.

I can tell you right now if you're on something that's being televised in public and something messes up like that you have two ways to go. One of them you battle like an idiot and hope at some point you find a segue out of it. The other way is you just roll with it and make a funny. He did that like the season professional he is. Obviously there's also the possibility of reshooting it with the second set of prizes but it probably would cost more money and effort to rebuild that set with new products then it does to just let him be the winner. It also humanizes things so I can absolutely see the producers leaving that in. It's pretty cool to watch

The lady sarcastically said, “Then you should know to have your passport out and ready, Sir.” The gentleman said, “I didn’t have to show it last time.” “IMPOSSIBLE!” the customs agent said. “ALL foreigners have always had to show a passport to enter the country.” The man responded by whispering, “Well, when I came ashore on the beach on D-Day in 1944, I couldn’t find any Frenchmen to show it to!”

It was different back then. Men drove there wife's to the store. They didn't shop. Bob was such a great man. Watching these old eps makes me miss my momma and siblings. Everyday Bob was on. Rest in peace 🙏

My father bought all of our groceries on a weekly basis. Sometimes I would tag along. Mom stayed home with my baby brother. This was in the 70's and 80's and when we moved out they would go together.
