1979-1981 Dylan did 3 born again Christian blues/gospel albums I’m not a religious person myself and even I feel the power in some of those songs. The song “Slow train coming” is a great song to react to from this period along with “every grain of sand” there’s so many amazing deep cuts from this period but those two are perhaps the two big hitters worth reacting to.

Thank you for this reaction. I LOVE this bluesy song. My husband is usually the music person in the family, but I’m the big Dylan fan. Since I was busy with babies/toddlers in the early 80’s, this entire album got by me. I agree with you - Dylan is a song writer like no other. He deserves so much credit that he is often denied!

Hey Chod ! Glad to see more Dylan here - loving it. I never saw a Dylan concert, but got lucky once when he showed up at a Grateful Dead show once. He did a full tour with them in 88’, so they were well ready for him to be step in the next year when I saw them. That was my favorite backing band of them all for showcasing his masterpieces. He and Jerry Garcia were great friends from way back.

This great song is from one of several albums Bob released during his Born Again period of the early 80s, very undervalued. Please do a reaction to "Absolutely Sweet Marie", a flat-out rocker from his Blonde On Blonde masterpiece album. Thanks, Chod.

I would highly recommend watching the documentary No Direction Home. It gives some insight on Bob Dylan from his own mouth. I have seen many many interviews with Dylan. Interviewers always try to figure out the meanings of his songs. Like you I appreciate his brilliance. Their meaning is whatever you choose to take from them.

Bob really loves singing the blues and in my opinion he's also really good at it. For other great bluesy material by him, you may wish to check out 'Temporary Like Achilles', 'Blind Willie McTell' (the version from Bob's recent official Bootleg Vol. 16 is bluesier than the one from Bootleg Vol. 1-3, in my opinion, but both are great), 'Goodbye, Jimmy Reed' from Bob's newest album released in 2020 or 'Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat', for example.

Wilburn gets such a kick out of Dylan. I wish there was a great rock artist with a big catalogue I could hear for the first time. Dylan is so great. He's getting old, see him in concert while you still can. I saw him in December 2019, he was fine.

I’m so pleased that you are diving into so much Dylan. Just understand that there is still a whole bunch more out there. I consider him my all time favorite artist. And I use the word artist rather than musician deliberately. Back in the early 2000’s I realized that as much of a Dylan fan as I was, there was a whole bunch of his music I really wasn’t very familiar with. So I spent about two years listening to just about nothing but Dylan. I would listen to his music on my commute to and from work, and I had about a one hour commute each way. I started with his very first album and worked my way forward. And I was never bored. Now I need to visit his newer stuff, which I honestly don’t know enough about. He has put out quite a bit of music in recent years and it has gotten a lot of praise.

In the 60s 70s he was the biggest artist out there. He had a accident in the 60s at his peak, told management, I'm not going back on the road and he didn't for another 7 years.so when he came back the first tour 2% of the population applied for tickets. He was the biggest artist on the planet

And that he wrote such lucid stuff at such a young age. Dylan talks about his song writing and inspiration in a lecture he gave as a requirement for accepting the Nobel - I believe it's available on youtube (the audio). Dylan invented rap music - "Subterranean Homesick Blues" - as he says in "I and I" - "I made shoes for everyone, even you, and I still go barefoot" - Check out "Hwy 61 Revisited" off album of same name - beats any other versions out there - also "Desolation Row" from same album is a must - versions matter with Bob, who never plays a song the same way twice - generally best to go with the album versions - live cuts can be an acquired taste.

The line "the Groom's still waiting at the altar" is a biblical reference. The "Groom" is Christ. The "Bride" is all the churches and all the multitudes of people who attend or might attend the churches and make that spiritual connection...they are all collectively "the Bride of Christ", but the "marriage" cannot be realized until the "Bride" shows up at the altar! So, the Christ Spirit is still waiting at the Altar for a lost humanity to collectively seek that spiritual connection with the Christ Spirit...and until they do, the Groom's still waiting at the altar. This occurs against a backdrop of strife, corruption, lawlessness, confusion, and destruction in the world at large, which is something Dylan has focused on a great deal in his songs, all through his entire career. It's a powerful song. And as usual, Bob does it with absolute intensity. You can, of course, find many other meanings in the song, which is again typical of Bob's writings. He writes in universal symbols that can hit many targets on many levels at the same time.

He started out doing folk music and always acoustic. He had a lot of fans turn on him and boo him bevy he went to electric guitar. It was a big controversy at the time. The folk singers felt like he was being a traitor but turned out he could still sing folk music electrified!! 😎☮️❤️🌻🎸🎧
