There was just no way he could have stayed on with the Wings, as cool as it had been to see Probert get two cups in '97 and '98, there was just no way he was going to be able to stay. Wings management had had enough long before the cup runs. Probert got his second chance, his third, fourth, fifth... endless chances to stay with the Wings until they had enough. Between '86-'93 he got numerous suspensions from the league for various infranctions (10+ suspensions), and he was suspended by the Wings on several occasions in multiple seasons for missing practices, missing team buses, team flights and showing up late to several game days, skipping rehab centers several times, arrested several times (multiple DUIs, the smuggling incident, assaulting an officer), the prison sentence, the temporary bannishment from the league. Detroit senior vice-president Jim Devellano decided not to make another contract offer to Probert and on July 19, 1994, the Wings announced that Probert was no longer part of the team. "This is the end," said Devellano. "In my 12 years with the organization we've never spent more time on one player and his problems than we have on Probert." Probert was one of my favorite players and he blew my mind when I was a teenager, he was so cool out there on the ice. But knowing all the headaches he caused the Wings management it's a wonder he lasted as long as he did with the team. I prefer his playing career with the Blackhawks actually, he looked so cool in that black jersey.

I have always felt sad for Bob Probert. As a kid growing up in Canada, I'm certain that all he wanted to do was to play hockey like the rest of the kids. But somewhere along the line some coach persuaded him/convinced him that the only way he could make the NHL was through fighting and that led him down a path of self-destruction. He wasn't a terrible hockey player at the NHL level, having scored 29 goals one season with the Red Wings while racking up 398 PIM in that same season. He rarely lost a fight (Crowder, Domi, Ewen) and seemed willing to accommodate anyone who wanted to earn a reputation as a NHL tough guy. I met Bob once in Chicago late in his career and I couldn't get over what a nice guy he was. Not what I had expected. So sad that these men (Probert, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak, Derek Boogard, etc) all suffered from a form of CTE which led them to have delusional and deleterious brain dysfunction that led all of them to their early deaths. So unnecessary, RIP Probie. You deserved better.

He kept getting off the ice to smoke one practice and his coach sparred with him. Took one punch and told him to come back out on the ice whenever he wanted.

Well smoking as well as getting hit in the head night in and night out. The brain can heal. But he was involved into many fights and put so much stress on his brain day in and day out. As an prior addict myself its hard to get your brain to function normally again, but it can happen.

@@daveyboy_ just saying it’s not all drugs that turn your brain into much 248 fights had a lot to do with substance abuse! I used to be into body building’. I’m more lean now but the stress of my workouts were a lot I would do ephedrine before a work out snd I be in the gym 4 hours, acts like coke! Then to ease the pain I had my pain killers! So my brain wasn’t in the best condition. At 38 I got diagnosed with epilepsy! But since I got clean my brain started to heal it took years. Still healing! But anyways, I wasn’t implying int u didn’t know what u were talking about but Bob was a heavy smoker as well! But I know the feeling of speed or coke u feel like ur invincible! But in tough guy I believe it had a lot to do with trauma to the head! Nothing really hurt Bob he kept going no matter what! I’m glad he was sober after he retired! But ya drugs smoking snd fighting will turn ur brain into mush!
