That was pretty cool actually, seeing such a piece of TV nostalgia from Europe on an American channel, just goes to show from where-ever they can find archived copies of the show ;). It's probably a broadcast mistake, maybe either by someone accidentally turning a knob to the test pattern system in the transmission tower or at the main broadcast site or because of a temporary loss of signal. In the days this was broadcasted, a lot of cable or over-the-air transmission and receiving started at one of the bigger transmission towers that either picked up the signal for distribution from another tower to distribute it over the local cable network around the tower towards the homes connected to them (or a tower picked it up from the master control room at the station that was broadcasting the episodes and served as a repeater to other towers). Whenever the signal would get lost (weather could be a big influence in those days, with the signal being analog a really hot day could make you see all kinds of really weird echoes (in transmission land they are called "reflections") in the image), there could be systems in place that would either cut the transmission signal off but there could also be systems in place, (at the transmission towers and sometimes at the local distribution network amplifying systems, but I'm not sure if these were used in Germany) that would immediately kick in at signal loss and provide one of the many test images there have been used in the history of television in Germany (and in The Netherlands as well). Transmission towers back in those days usually had technicians inside them during broadcasts that would monitor incoming signals and the signal people would see at home. Whenever they saw a test image they knew something was wrong and could start locating the problem, either by checking systems in the tower or by calling the distribution point. The test card in general was used to adjust equipment (not only your TV at home) by providing some very characteristic voltages in the signal and differences between them, showing inconsistencies in the transmission signal and sending and receiving and the viewing equipment. Electronics could be quite heat-sensitive back then and using the testcard was necessary to deal with manufacturer margins in components and heat-sensitive components that could slightly shift their output once warmed up after being on for 2-3 hours. Indirectly it was also a way to make people aware their TV was functioning properly, while people could wonder if their TV broke if it would only display a black image, seeing a test card (with the beep) was basically a way of showing "Sorry, your TV is still working well, the problem is somewhere else, we are working on it, hold on".

My personal favorite bit is towards the end, when he's talking about the response to his late wife. He's thanking everyone for understanding, he sounds like he's about to burst into tears, and then.....he shrugs. It may seem like a weird action, but for me, I actually do that whenever I'm in a situation of that sort. I find it helps relieve me, as it turns what is a serious and depressing part of life into, well, just a part of life. It's something we can't understand, it's just normal, and you accept it. Thanks, Bob. :)

Bob is dearly missed. I’d like to think that there is an afterlife beyond the mortal world and that the soul of Bob Ross reunited with his beloved wife and is still painting his happy little clouds and trees for the rest of the angles to enjoy.

I love that no matter what, he always "suggests" that a tree might live on his canvas. If Bob Ross doesn't have a tree or a cloud in his painting, he did it wrong.
