Just imagine you come back from a long tiring walk from school and it's snowing really heavily out side like a blizzard. And you open your door and in your living room you see him covering the canvas with green. And he goes "welcome back" and beams at you. Then all the snow melts off of you because that just warmed your little heart.

The background music isn't necessarily bad, I can understand why they thought they needed it in the beginning, but whoever made the decision to omit it deserves a footnote in television history. Maybe fans wrote in telling them to ditch the music in favor of Bob's voice and the sound of the canvas. Great to see these early episodes and see how the show developed.

I like the groovy music in the background. But yes, for fans of asmr, and just Bob fans in general, he was the jewel of the show. It didn't need the music so much as it was just a little addition to the show. Maybe that's how liked to paint at home.

I should check to be sure before I go and comment but I want to say that he mentions the pallet and brushes in the last episode of this first series. It is a question and answer episode with him and his son Steve. And yeah he mentions those things periodically throughout all the series. I think I've noticed that in some of the earlier series (1-6, before he changed to his own brand equipment) that he actually duct taped his knife. It looks all sloppy and weird and seems like it would be a pain to use and wipe off properly. But then when he went over to his own equipment (with the white handles) he spray painted the knives... And since I started painting recently, I have even been blinded by my own knife at times with the lighting I put up. I've been considering doing the same thing! Getting the lighting to not reflect off your painting seems to be an art form in itself. I've tried all types of bulbs and angles, it's actually a bit of a pain in the ass!

I've got an art academy education and still struggle with Bob Ross' technique. Now granted, I've done very little oil painting in my life (more acrylics/gouache type of guy) so that can be due to that. But it's true what he says, you've got to practice a lot even to get this seemingly simple technique down.

BOB R, TECHNIQUE ITS THE EASIEST OF ALL. IT IS VERY EASY AND IS FOR BEGINNERS. I started painting with William Alexander tv programs n the 70's and I did very nice paintings following his tutorials, Bob Ross was one of his students, and after William A. died (some people didn't like him because of his accent -Polish- ) btu painted very nicely, and he also painted other things beside landscapes.

I am from Australia and just discovered Bob Ross. I lost my passion for art many years ago, raising a family of 5 took up all my time and art got locked away. I lost my eldest daughter before Christmas 2019, but also lost part of myself; when I came across Bob's art, my heart skipped a beat, a flame burst inside...I felt alive again. I have just done my first painting...in acrylics...because I couldn't wait for my oils to arrive. Used same techniques, worked quickly, and didn't add water, just wet brushes. Not quite the same effect, but passable. I cried when I found out he had passed so long ago, the world lost such a talented artist way to early. Even today he is teaching...me, right across the ocean. I hope I can make him proud. Respects to all his family and friends.

Did you coat the canvas entirely first with white paint? That was his trick, the wet on wet technique -- wet paint on a wet canvas is what made his technique work.

In the PBS documentary "Bob Ross: The Happy Painter" the producers admitted the sound quality in these first season episodes is terrible. But even so, it's nice to see this humble beginning as Bob started out as Bill Alexander's protegee, using Bill's "almighty brush" memes while also developing his own quiet, positive low-key delivery that would later make him famous.
