Boba, I don't think the sequel will pertain to the court of owls. If anything, I think it will follow up on the thread from the first with Bruce being an Arkham and Martha being a patient. I think the corruption of Arkham will be front and center. However, i don't think The Court Of Owls is out of the question. I would like to see them built up and then tackled in a final "The Batman" film. Pattinson is just too young in the series to confront the court. As a side note, the whole scene with the DA seems to hint at the court, but it's moreso likely about the mob Edit:Damn never mind Boba, I guess I should watch the whole video 😅

I think that Thomas was supposed to be planted as the mayor of Gotham instead of Falcone but Martha was coming closer to exposing them therefore Thomas or The Court sends her away to Arkham just so people would doubt her because no one would think twise about the ramblings of an insane woman.

Incredible breakdown and discussion. No one can do these like you can. Really appreciate your methodological approach in breaking this down point by point, clue by clue. I agree with you - while it really feels like Reeves is all but saying it is the Court, it’s hard to fathom how, given how all the clues about corruption in the first movie were seemingly wrapped up or explained. As you go through in this video, you could extrapolate some things to mean another hidden layer of corruption, but it feels like a bit of a reach in most cases. However, if we entertain that it is in fact the Court, then to further make sense of this, we need to think like writers. What made the Court of Owls storyline so effective in the comics was that Batman discovers the Court as we the reader discovers it. It’s a shock to him and it’s a shock to us, and it reframes his entire perspective on Gotham, just like it does with us. That’s part of why this storyline is so beloved. In the original 7 issue storyline, the reveal of the Court comes at the end of issue #3, which is about halfway through. In screenwriting/storytelling terms, there is often a twist of some kind that happens at the midpoint of the story that’s called the “Midpoint Turn.” If you look for it in your favorite movies, you’ll be able to spot it fairly easily. It’s often something that changes things for the protagonist in a big way. It doesn’t have to be a literal twist, and sometimes it’s just a realization by the protagonist that they need to handle their problems in a different way. In any case, the comics storyline reveals the Court at this point to give that big turn to the story. However, say in future interviews Reeves reveals straight up that it is the Court, or drops more hints that make us certain that it can’t be anything else. Then our knowledge and Batman’s is misaligned. A Midpoint Turn reveal of the Court isn’t going to shock us. Even if most movie goers aren’t comics readers, there are still going to be a ton of explainers and word of mouth accounts of what the Court is, and viewers are already going to be accustomed to the idea that Gotham is highly corrupt. It just won’t have that punch. “I’m investigating corruption…oh no, there’s even worse corruption!” is not much of a twist. The Court will have to be revealed before the midpoint, maybe as part of the initial setup. But then what is the gut-punch at the midpoint? I don’t know. Maybe this is why it’s taken Reeves so long to write the script. He has a lot of plot points and mysteries to manage if he wants something that recreates the experience of reading that comic run for the first time. One possible twist I thought of, not necessarily midpoint-worthy, but could work for the storyline in general, is that Bella Reál is Court. Otherwise I don’t know! But like you, I trust Reeves, though I think if it is the Court, he’s really got a challenge on his hands.

Don’t mean to sound like this, but didn’t we already know the court was coming? When Riddler talked about Gotham city’s corruption being its foundation and it spanning back decades, alluding to Bruce’s father being in on it, the detective with the device on his neck saying “it’s bigger than you and me” in the cathedral when he didn’t want to tell Batman anything and, etc. There were plenty of things pointing to them showing up at some point.

Regarding the Court of Owls being responsible for the Wayne murders, I could easily see an interesting way to tie them together. As a billionaire and one of the most powerful men in Gotham, as well as running for Mayor at the time of his murder, perhaps the Court approached Thomas for recruitment at some point. Maybe they even offered him a secured victory in his election if he joined them and agreed to act as an extension of the Court while as Mayor. Obviously the Court would be highly invested in securing the Mayor's office, and it would be a billionaire Mayor no less. But maybe Thomas rejected them, and perhaps even threatened to expose them to the public. So obviously the Court couldn't allow this to happen, and took necessary measures to not only stop him from going public, but eliminate the possibly of him EVER going public. I'm sure the Court also approached Thomas' political opponent at the time and secured his obedience, so as to cover all their bases and ensure compliance from the Mayor's office.

Couple of things not mentioned. One there’s talk of clayface being one of the villains. Two there was a court of owls mask at Wayne manor. Showing that the Wayne’s were a part of the court of owls. That could be a darker look at the court of owls as that his father or his mother or his grandparents were part of the court. I speculate this will be background and most likely lightly touched on as a background plot.

I like what you said about Gil Colson. It was one thing I didn't love about The Batman - Colson's so terrified about what "they" would do to his family/loved ones and it makes perfect sense in the context of the movie, but...that's the big twist? That the Falcone mob controls Gotham? It always felt somewhat underwhelming and I think it would be more impactful if the deeper corruption hinted at was, in fact, the Court of Owls. Also a good point that Colson wouldn't be privy to the secrets of the Court but I don't think he has to be...all he has to know is that Falcone is pulling the strings, BUT there are even scarier and more powerful people pulling the the strings behind HIM. Good stuff as always!

im not a fan of the court tbh. they’re cool in the comics, but for a big feature film i would prefer a singular main antagonist with another side antagonist, like they did in the first film with riddler and penguin primarily (even though carmine falcone is technically included, i don’t really see him as a rogues gallery villain per se) something like scarecrow and hush, or freeze and clayface for the second film. it’s just more cinematic that way. the whole court of owls just doesn’t have that same cinematic punch that one individual and more recognisable big bad would imo.

Waynes, Arkhams, Court of owls. Probably going to find out the reason the waynes even started renewal is because the court was trying to do something to take all the money away from the people who needed it and it was their way of trying to combat them without outing them. I think the "seeds" that Reeves is referencing is more so things that riddler started revealing but maybe was just scratching the surface. I think Edward elliot maybe was finding out more than he thought and Thomas Wasyne was genuinely concerned for Edward and wanted to protect him from finding out too much. And that coverup was the beginning of the court of owls forming Also as far as I understand Reeves doesnt say that the main focal point of the movie is going to be the discovery of this very deep corruption but rather that he will continue to discover it in the second part. Or at least thats how i understand it EDIT: Also the warden from arkham i bet will be a part of the corruption and potentially the court

I got some Batman part 2 theories that you could talk about in a video. Scarecrow is responsible for Martha losing her mind while at Arkham, this in turns creates personal conflict between Bruce and Crane. Would be a great subplot to explore. I really think someone like Bill Skarsgard could be great as scarecrow. Court of Owls are responsible for Scarecrow being born and he’s a porn in their big plan? Similar to what happened in Batman Begins with Scarecrow working for Ra’s Al Ghul. Hugo Strange is part of the Owls and is working closely with them?

I'm not a fan of the Court of Owls story. The idea that Gotham's sins and corruption stem from a big bad organization instead of humanity’s greed simply feels boring and childish. To be honest, I was pretty disappointed when I read the interview. Another dive into Gotham’s deeper corruption? That feels kind of repetitive to me. I thought it would have been great to take a break from the corruption theme in the second installment and focus on sympathetic villains like Freeze for once.

25:06 what if it’s not the Wayne’s but the Arkam’s? Martha tries to get away from the court and they frame her and make her look crazy… then they’re killed not because of anything to do with Thomas or Falcone, but because the information that might have gone public would have risked exposing The Court. The movie could end with The Court not quite defeated and loose threads still left unsolved. Part 3 could be like an Arkam Asylum movie, where Batman needs to delve into the depths of Arkam to finally get answers, and face off against members of his rogues gallery along the way

I saw a comment on Reddit about how the corruption could be linked with Hugo Strange and Arkham. Maybe it could involve Strange using the drops to pass people off as insane and have them committed to Arkham, kind of like Thomas Wayne did in the telltale game. The next step; we saw the mobsters side of the corruption of Gotham in part 1 and soon the penguin, so if there was a much deeper layer, it would be the opposite side of Gotham; the elite, the rich folks, the ones above the people. That doesn't necessarily means the court of owls will be the villains of part 2. And honestly, i see them more as the ultimate boss for Gotham in part 3 with the Joker being batman's ultimate foe of course. (Side note: If penguin remains the kingpin for a while, knowing who he is, he wouldn't be happy to learn that he isn't as much in control as he thinks) 2. The Wayne's sins; despite Alfred's claim of innocence, the Wayne's could have been part of the corruption. Like you said, we still don't know who killed them and who knows, maybe we'll learn more in part 2. But they were a wealthy family, so maybe they have connections to the elites of Gotham. 3. Hush, the mention of the Elliots can't be just an easter egg, i could imagine a scenario where, while Riddler was attacking the city's officials, maybe we could see Thomas Elliot killing the wealthy people of Gotham which would include the Waynes. And that would have a domino effect with Batman and Gordon discovering the secret of Gotham's true corruption. 4 the Crime Saga; it is a very interesting choice of title for Reeves story, that would mean that the entire story will not just be about Batman/Bruce, but also the unravel of Gotham's corruption. And in each title, we would see a part of this city's sins: Part 1, Gotham's officials; the penguin, the crime family. What other parts of the city could we see: the elites, Arkham, the court, a cult? Guess we'll have to find out.

I wish Matt Reeves would do maybe 5 movies rather than the likely 3. Would love to see him deal with the Court of Owls, but also quite a few other villains, and for Ra's Al Ghul, Bane and Talia to be in there somewhere at some point. I feel like with both Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan, they were sort of racing through it a bit too quick, often with two villains in each movie, and then their done. I want there to be enough movies that villains can return. Like Heath Ledger's Joker was meant to.

Back when the first movie came out I was really hopeful that this universe would tackle the Court of Owls because I really think a more grounded take on the concept is exactly what it needs, that aside from the fact that I just sincerely believe it'd fit into this world. Especially with a Bruce who might now be starting to move towards a more philanthropist public image, It'd be interesting to see The Court try and pull him into their fold.

i realy like the angle that reeves is going,because it feels like a natural progression of where batman should go...in the first film he learned that vengence wont change the past and people need hope,but he also learned going around gotham and punching criminals will not save the city,so remember,the thing that created riddler was the corruption in renewal,and it isnt like,falcone is dead ,corruption is over,and it isnt like falcone started all the problems with gotham,so maybe we will see batman investigating where all this misery truly started,and he investigates not just the history of corruption in gotham,but the history of gotham it self,and that is how he finds out there is a source to all of this caos that is gotham,also another seed i think is riddler calling the waynes and the arkhams the "gotham founding families" maybe we will learn more secrets of the arkham family and how they might be the responsible for all this and the source,they being court of owls or not

Court of owls would be perfect overarching antagonist for this series keeping up with the theme of Gotham’s political corruption from the first film. Just when you think Gothams turning around reveal another level the court has infiltrated and show Batman’s need to continually adapt as the symbol of hope that inspires more allies to rise as he said he can’t be everywhere.

Based on those comments I'd say we'll get there but they will cross the medical field with Freeze, Strange and other twisted experiments first. We saw the operating table and we know Strong is in the cast so its likely well see characters from the medical field with more easter Owl eggs. Then they'll connect it all to the Orphanage , Arkham and the whole "Circus of Strange" that is Gotham and introduce Grayson at the end.

I would love to see the court of owls. I hope we get another side antagonist though like The Ventriloquist and Scarface. Having a side antagonist would be a perfect way to reveal the court. Imagine a scene between Batman and the ventriloquist where the ventriloquist is trying to tell Batman about the court while Scarface is trying to silence him. It would be a great villain moment, and also would lead into the larger story.

The Riddler's character is not typically involved with stories like The Batman, and his involvement in unearthing Gotham's corrupt history was made up for the movie. I don’t think The Court of Owls should be the villain for part 2. They should be revealed and dealt with in 3. Part 2’s villain should more aptly be Mr Freeze and how BM’s humanity would shine more as he wrestles with and or tries to convince a villain dealing with grief due to said corrupted system causing his wife’s death. Also, they could make Slade being one of the villains hired by the Court to take out Batman due to him getting even closer to how deep-rooted their power is and literally on the brink of exposing them. They could save his appearance for last where he and Batman could have a short fight with both clashing/feeling each other out and Slade giving him a warning and makes an escape.

My issue with the potential inclusion of Hush in the new movie is that Hush was originally depicted as someone investigating the Wayne family when Bruce was a child. This would make him significantly older, which doesn’t fit well with suddenly introducing him as a friend who was never mentioned before. I would prefer seeing villains like the Court of Owls, which seems like a more fitting direction. I understand that we might not get the more fantastical villains from the comics, but it’s crucial for the film to be action-packed. Watching the original film again, it's clear that Batman's detective work was lacking. For example, he completely overlooked the significance of photos taken outside the nightclub where everything culminates. In the comics and games, Batman would have definitely checked such crucial locations. It’s a major oversight that makes the film’s depiction of Batman as a detective seem inadequate.

Could the deeper corruption Reeves is referring to be the GCPD? I remember when Reeves talked about the GCPD series and how it would explore the fact that the police would be the worst gang in Gotham. IIRC Dark Victory kind of deals with this a bit, many of Hangman's targets were corrupt cops.

And if the Wayne's were involved with the Court, it would've made more sense Thomas going to them for help with the reporter rather than Falcone

I’d like to think he finds them by doing public damage control of his family’s image after having his mother and father being outed by riddler… maybe his parents were some of the higher up in the court and they tried to get out of it and the court decided to set up them being murdered… and this could be reviled to him onece he finds them?? Or maybe his parents left him some deeper hidden clues that only he would know how to find them or where to start like maybe his father is the one that let’s Bruce know about the secret talon room on the hidden floor?? Maybe it’s in plain sight? Hidden within Wayne tower he’s living in?

This might be a wild theory but what if the seed that’s been planted from the first movie is Harvey dent. When Coulson said that it’s the whole system i think from his perspective he may have been talking about a better call Saul type of situation where what if Harvey helped Falone come up with that plead deal in order build a system of leverage that nobody a can’t break through and we start to see how Harvey dent progressively become two face where on one side you have this white collar hotshot lawyer how genuinely wants to do good but struggles with is biopolar disorder and violent D.I.D. Which brings me to bad Harvey who is the one who orchestrated both the plead deal and putting enough dirt on coulson so that he be a fall guy think of harvey’s transformation as fight club meets better call Saul. Now I’m not fully dismissing the idea of the court of owls being a possibility but just not this early for I think that they might either save that for James Gunns DCEU or for the three movie the court is the main adversary and Bruce/Batman would have to save young Dick Grayson from being groomed into becoming another talon along with a them luring him into there cause with the promise of vengeance for the death of his parents who (unknowing to Dick) they actually get Toni Zuko to kill the flying graysons.

Love your breakdowns Boba! The one thing i don’t understand from fans though is all of the hype with Hush? I mean he’s “okay” but is he really that great? The Hush comic was good because you didn’t know who this mysterious guy was that was always a step ahead and why he hated Wayne so much. Once the reveal happens, it’s an awesome reveal, but to me, that’s where the magic dies for him for me. He’s got the personal tie with Batman which is always great for a villain to have. But other than that mystery, he wasn’t an epic villain, just my opinion. And the whole surgical face swap stuff is cool but in reeves universe? I don’t think it’ll work Now scarecrow or Freeze… those are interesting villains with entertaining abilities that could be realistic and challenge Batman on different levels.
