I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1994. I was working at a convenience store in south Florida, he came in with Little Jimmy Dickens. They were doing a fishing show with Wade Reynolds . He is truly a Southern gentleman.

I don't care who wrote it, all I know is when I listen to it, it brings my Dad back to me,, and I can sit and close my eyes and his there with me. If I was to listen to the original it wouldn't be the same! We sang along with ,,,, Bobby Bare,,,,

Love it! This song has sentimental value for me, though it was sung by Neil Young when I first heard it.

The one about the soldier and his horse in the snowstorm almost making it back to Mary Ann marked my heart as a very very small child...
Living thousands of miles away from where I grew up and far from my oldest friends and family this song really hits me hard and deeply.

I was 17 years old high school girl when I listened this song from Sony radio hidden under my desk in Korea . I was falling in love with America and went to work at G.I compound at the yongjugol , near Seoul . I met a very shy American soldier while I work for Korean interpreter . We moved to San Jose , California and raised four children and adopted one son who lost father and mother from tragic incident . Life is so unpredictable and sometimes amazingly beautiful cause God directs our courses of life and introduce someone to change our lives.

I'm 500 miles away from home Teardrops fell on momma's note When I read the things she wrote She said we miss you son we love you come on home Well I didn't have to pack I had it all right on my back Now I'm 500 miles away from home Away from home away from home Cold and tired and all alone Yes, I'm 500 miles away from home I know this is the same road I took the day I left home, But it sure looks different now. And I guess I look Different too, cause time changes everything. I wonder what They'll say, when they see their boy looking this bad. Oh I wonder what they'll say when I get home Can't remember when I ate It's just thumb and walk and wait And I'm still 500 miles away from home If my luck had been just right I'd be with them all tonight But I'm 500 miles away from home Away from home away from home Oh I'm still 500 miles away from home

I heard him perform this song at the Texas club, in Baton Rouge, La many years ago. I love this song and it was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. I would merge his version into the PP&M version.
