One of the most powerful, charismatic and coolest performances i've seen of the great Bobby Darin. It's a pity there's no studio version.

Darin's talent ... playing instruments, song writing, (Theme from Come September, Dream Lover, Splish Splash, Multiplication, etc.), and his ability to sing rock and roll, country, blues, swing, pop, jazz, et al, simply blows Sinatra away. Listen to all the discordant notes in Sinatra's "My Way" or "New York New York" and compare to ANY Darin song ... Sinatra has so many harsh sounds ... yes, when he is not reaching for crescendos, and just relaxing into the song, his voice is great ... but Bobby does it from start to finish.

It would've been amazing if he recorded this one in the studio as a single. It would've been pretty successful.

Many people wanted to perform 16 tons, after Tennessee Ernie Ford made it popular! It was fun to sing. Bobby Darin was a special talent, he sometimes seemed haughty and brash, but in real life, he was really quite humble. Anything else was part of an act because he had insecurities, in that he knew he was going to die young and he just wanted to get out there and make the most out of life while he had it! Sometimes it takes a bit pride in knowing what you can do, that induces people to come off egotistical at times. (It is more than obvious in Hollywood, and not liked by most! Those who deserve to have an ego usually don't have to show it, it's those who don't, who try to flaunt it that are annoying!) Bobby could play about 5 instruments as well as compose music and lyrics, sing, and act. Truly an exceptional talent!

I've just listened to The Platters' version - of course they did brightly - but our dear BD as some put it, touches our souls. You may find interesting some Wikipedia info about the song : "Sixteen Tons" is a song about a coal miner, based on life in coal mines in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. It was written and first recorded by Merle Travis at the Radio Recorders Studio B in Hollywood, California on August 8, 1946. [...] The line, "You load sixteen tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt," came from a letter written by Travis' brother John. Another line came from their father, a coal miner, who would say, "I can't afford to die. I owe my soul to the company store." [...] the line, "I owe my soul to the company store", is a reference to the truck system and to debt bondage. Under this scrip system, workers were not paid cash; rather they were paid with non-transferable credit vouchers which could be exchanged only for goods sold at the company store. This made it impossible for workers to store up cash savings.

verse translation into Russian

Jimmy Scalia has held Bobby Darin’s legacy back in his greedy little fingers for YT releases like this instead of sharing content with other outlets, letting them polish and release footage to the masses. It’s so irritating. Bobby deserved better than the estate he got.
