One of the most common things artists would love to do is work from where ever we want, whenever we want and make a great living all through the internet. Bobby Chiu is one of the few people that has been doing just that for over the last decade. In this video, Bobby shares 8 important steps to creating opportunities over the internet.
As usual, Bobby and his friends teach at www.Schoolism.com

I just found this channel today, and as much as a part of me feels like I wish I had known about it all these years ago, I also feel I needed an influence like this in my life more today than ever. I recently announced I will go on a hiatus and the thought has kinda terrified me because I have this atrocious habit of putting things off... and it almost stays that way indefinitely. I love art, and have always been an artist/creator etc. but have floundered through life in terms of career and what is it that I want and want to do. Watching these videos not only helps me wade through some of the misty terrain I tread in my life, but also helps guide me to a better understanding of myself and what I want versus what I need to do. I can't thank you enough for making these!

Been thinking of joining Schoolism for a while but wasn't sure. Now I'm sold. The fact that an already accomplished, successful artist will look at my work and critique it and correct it etc., is a huge help and best way to learn besides creating, creating and more creating. Awesome. Love your videos by the way Mr. Chiu and you art.

Thank you for sharing! As a self-taught artist, I feel like I lack a lot of information, and have much more stuff to learn. Your videos inspire me and help me go back to the "start": drawing, and doing it for real. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your wonderful, inspiring videos! I am one of those people who constantly tells myself I'll do all the things I want to (proactively post my art online, do personal projects that I want to, paint the things I want to paint)... once I'm better. And I'm sure it's no surprise that I'm never "better" enough to make it happen. I am going to try to kick my butt into gear and do something that I actually want to do besides just studying all the time, even if I don't feel good enough for it.

Hi Bobby, I always enjoy things you share, I might say you are one of top-5 sources of my daily inspiration at my work. I particularly liked videos where you talk about your daily routine and about mornings. As an idea, you are always on the go, travelling and meeting peoples. Could you maybe do a short video of how you absorb/sketch/note/explore the Life while travelling? Because somehow I am sure experience you get from all the travels gets into your work, but sometimes things are very intense + overwhelming, so how do you NO forget little things?:) With love to you and all the team of Schoolism. PS: gonna hit cinema to see Alice this weekend, yay!

Another great video, thank you so much! I´m trying to break into comics, and it´s taking a lot of time; but while I´m working on samples for editors, I´ve been working in a personal project, which I plan to transform into a webcomic. It has taken a lot of time to write the complete script, but I´m happy for having accomplish that (all my admiration to writers!), so now it´s time to start drawing it :) I think I will use Tumblr for that, it has a nice interface for webcomics.Thanks for the inspiration! Asya you're so right too! I'm still struggling, but I hope my experiences will help. Today I improved my skills and I get a little bit more feedback. I started by stopping to trust and listen to people who said "you can't make it", "art is not a job", etc... especially when it comes from artists, teachers, friends or family because it's disturbing even if I never believed it. Stopping to work as cashier or a cook just to pay the bills because I had no time to draw and it's dangerous, you can broke you arms for life (like my friend), in my case I broke my back. Also finding a job for a women it's harder because people fire women easily for nothing and no reason. After a sucession of failure in artschool, work, traveling, I get back to my parents house, I'm still there. I had to understand that art is a real job first then I needed to understand that it's the kind of job who ask the double of effort, knowing that I won't be payed at the beginning. I worked for free internationally in digital art (for the experiences, because you can't be hired in France without link) and I will not do it again because people think if it's free, it's cheap. The solution was to go back to what I loved, digital art, watching a lot of tutorial, illustrations, listen to artists like bobby, reading, watching movies, series, specialy drawing and taking all my time, slowly, simply drawing without stress and judgement helped a lot. Being nice with myself, stay positif, I don't let anybody drag me down. Very important for everybody, know your civil right, you need a legal insurance cause you'll always find people who will try to screw you (boss, owner, sellers etc). Few month ago I started to sell my work on internet (nothing sold yet), a shop on society6, a patreon, a kickstarter, a tumblr with a paypal donation button etc... I start to see myself as an professional artist who need money to live and be free, I'm more fast and I improved the quality of my art, now I take myself seriously and make a new portfolio of what I love to draw.
@asiaklymchuk
@asiaklymchuk 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, for sharing your story! For me also, just like you said, once you understood that THIS is a job, and you are profesional, and money from art is going to pay your bills - things changed. Whould you like to provide link to your portfolio?

Thanks for these great videos, Bobby! I still miss your previous longer livestreams, but any video by you is encouraging. One thing: When I clicked to share this video (like you told us in this video), KZbin told me, that the video is unlisted and that I should reconsider sharing it. Another question not related to this video: Weeks ago (on April the 4th this year) you held a KZbin event "ChiuStream - How to get illustration work?" with Lauren Panepinto and artist Marc Scheff. Unfortunately I missed a good chunk of that stream and when I wanted to rewatch it, I wasn't able to do so. Didn't you plan to have it available as a video to rewatch? Whenever I click on it, it says, that that event has ended. I hoped, it would turn up in your video archive, but so far it didn't. It would be awesome, if you'd consider putting that stream up as a video, because it was really informative. I don't know, if KZbin allows me to post the link to this event page. Here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqDaZXl9iLl6jM0&ab_channel=BobbyChiu Thanks for all of your great videos and interviews and livestreams (whenever they happen)!

I watch all of your videos when I'm down! They put me back in the right head space. I'm currently working on paintings for a show coming up, but it's causing me to neglect my animation. I'm struggling with having too many ideas and which to develop first. I have a concept for a short (and I mean 2 minutes) that is original from top to bottom and a separate idea for a short (also 2 minutes) that's an original spin from existing animation, like a fan film. As a matter of opinion, which would you suggest I follow first; completely original or a something that would be familiar to an existing audience? Thank You SOOOO Much!!
@BobbyChiu
@BobbyChiu 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Brystal, There's benefits to both. the fan film will get you more views most likely but an original idea that's successful will be much more helpful for you if you want to be a creative person that comes up with her own IP.

Hello Bobby Chiu I wanted to ask you question what be the recommended amount of hours should be put into drawing because I try drawing 12-16 hours a day.

I think 12hrs a day is wonderful but I challenge you to only break to stretch and eat... no email, phone calls or social media.

I want to make an animated show about dragons. I know how to draw dragons, I made a few characters that love and I want to develop, but I am afraid that I expose them and my ideas or designs get stolen... what should I do in that case?

If I were in your position, Id realise this is just an excuse my brain is making. It's a legitimate concern, but I mean you are giving it more power/importance than it deserves. It's possible this could happen, but what are the chances? And you can work on a contingency plan while working on the show. A simpler approach is "Deal with the problem when it happens and not overthink about it right now". I would try to convince myself how irrational this thought is and how its not worth delaying something I want. (Im guilty of doing similar things. Using a fear to procrastinate). Well not to lecture you here tbh. Just saying that its just our brain doubting and making up excuses to not do the work. If youre really concerned and still cant get past the fear, then one suggestion I have is: Put out a small (non-revealing) art bit of this show or the characters. For instance, if you have an art account/just any of your social media account, then post a random snapshot style image of 2-3 dragons or whoever your characters are. Make it interesting, and pretty obviously. If people love it, keep them engaged by using these characters as uh webcomics or something? You gotta use your creativity here really. And once you feel you've established an audience, you could turn the "show" into an illustrated book or comic OR if you're hung up on making it into an animated show, then pitch your idea to some animation studio or production house (Im not very well-informed about animation so I apologise for not being helpful there). You gotta be logical and reasonable here. Sometimes 10k people will love the said product but only 2k or 3k will actually buy it. Be aware of your "actual demand" and not just overall hype/admiration you're receiving. Good luck! :)

how do I deal with society ? I mean I'm seen as a failure with too much dreams . I wanna be the best concept artist I can be , I wanna inspire people in my condition . I have no money for art school, I'm currently stuck in an engineering course which is driving me nuts !. Im too emotional a lot of times it gets in the way .when I am going consistently with my work , something always screws it up , perhaps a month of exams , or family crisis or something :(

Find these videos fascinating having seen your career progress over the years and been a student on one of your schoolism classes. When you are talking about 'Beta Testing Groups', check out the "Lean Start Up" www.amazon.com/Lean-Startup-Entrepreneurs-Continuous-Innovation/dp/0307887898?ie=UTF8&keywords=lean%20startup&qid=1464641596&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 It is more with a technology focus but think it will put a structure and framework around your thoughts about getting 'feedback' etc.
